This study analyses three decades of the peculiar bloom-formation history of the potentially toxic invasive planktonic dinoflagellates Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller in the SW Baltic Sea. We tested a research hypothesis that the unexpectedly long delay (nearly two decades) in population development of P. minimum prior to its first bloom was caused by competition with one or several closely related native dinoflagellate species due to ecological niche partitioning which hampered the spread and bloom-forming potential of the invader. We applied the ecological niche concept to a large, long-term phytoplankton database and analysed the invasion history and population dynamics of P. minimum in the SW Baltic Sea coastal waters using the data on phytoplankton composition, abundance and biomass. The ecological niche dimensions of P. minimum and its congener P. balticum were identified as the optimum environmental conditions for the species during the bloom events based on water temperature, salinity, pH, concentration of nutrients (PO43−; total phosphorus, TP; total nitrogen, TN; SiO44−), TN/TP-ratio and habitat type. The data on spatial distribution and ecological niche dimensions of P. minimum have contributed to the development of the “protistan species maximum concept”. High microplankton diversity at critical salinities in the Baltic Sea may be considered as a possible reason for the significant niche overlap and strong competitive interactions among congeners leading to prolonged delay in population growth of P. minimum preceding its first bloom in the highly variable brackishwater environment.  相似文献

The recruitment of algae is a critical process during algal colonization and invasions, including coral-to-algal phase shifts. Although algae are widely assumed to colonize and kill corals, there is very little known about the recruitment dynamics of coral reef algae. This study tested the ability of two dominant macroalgae (Fucales including Sargassum spp. and Lobophora variegata) to settle and grow on healthy coral tissue. The study also explored the effects of interactions with prior occupants, and of abiotic substrate properties (texture, and ceramic and carbonate material). The results indicate that healthy corals were able to prevent attachment or survival of recruits of these macroalgae. This is a significant point, since it suggests that the replacement of corals by algae may often require prior stress or death in the coral tissue. Pre-conditioning of plates at different sites had some effects, but these were relatively minor, whereas there was considerable variation within sites. Some of this variation appeared to be related to the amount of turf algae or crustose coralline algae on the plates. Recruitment was generally, but not always, higher on plates with rougher texture. Overall, this preliminary exploration indicates considerable potential for variability in outcomes of algal colonization, with implications for the dynamics of algal invasions. In particular, the results do not support suggestions that planktonic algal propagules can directly settle on and colonize healthy coral tissue.Communicated by Topic Editor D. Barnes  相似文献

Coral mortality and interaction with algae in relation to sedimentation   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The impact of sedimentation on coral–algal interactions was studied by monitoring tissue mortality and radial growth in two coral species, Colpophyllia natans and Siderastrea siderea, over a continuum of sediment input intensities. This study sets out to investigate (1) whether sedimentation can facilitate algal overgrowth of corals and (2) whether this was a significant cause of coral mortality. Over a 15-month period, 198 coral colonies were tagged and photographed at six sites along two replicate gradients of sediment input, spanning high inputs near river mouths to low inputs at exposed headlands. Photographs were taken so that they covered the interface between colonies and algae. Radial growth was measured along colony edges in contact with algae and unaffected by tissue loss from causes other than competition with algae. To establish whether algal overgrowth was a significant cause of coral mortality, tissue mortality on the colony surface area visible in the photographs was related to different causes, including sediment smothering, disease, and algal overgrowth. Radial growth became negative with increasing proximity to river mouths in C. natans and remained negative or close to zero throughout the gradients in S. siderea, overall suggesting that sedimentation can facilitate algal overgrowth on corals. However, the analysis of tissue mortality revealed that algal overgrowth was a relatively minor cause of tissue loss. In contrast, the most important cause of coral mortality in relation to sedimentation was from sediment smothering, probably during intense episodes of deposition associated with heavy rainfall. We conclude that sedimentation may lead to reef degradation by causing coral mortality through sediment smothering and burial, and then by suppressing the regrowth of surviving adult colonies through increased competition with algae.  相似文献

The chemical and nutritional properties of microalgae are well known, which has led to an ever expanding industry for foods and dietary supplements both in terms of quantity and products. Little has been done to regulate or control quality and assurance in the applied phycology industry and it is known that it varies considerably. Nutritional aspects of produced biomass and consumption as dietary supplements have become issues of concern, especially since the industry is lucrative and fast growing. Various claims are made regarding dietary and food supplements that include health, nutrition, structure and functioning, many often unsubstantiated. Although quality is a subjective term many organisations are involved in testing, controlling and determining criteria. Today quality is more than just standards where it is an "integrated quality management approach" involving amongst others "hazard analyses and critical control points" (HACCP) practices. Microalgae are not recognised as a food or food supplement and they are also not categorised under herbals or botanicals, but as "other supplements". Produced microalgal biomass is subject to contamination from the entire range of contaminants and pathogens. Contamination of products by algal toxins in mixed culture populations also occurs. The industry has largely regulated itself, but there is considerable scope for improvement. There is a need for support and dissemination of information in the industry.  相似文献

To investigate characteristics of ATP-dependent sliding of a non-muscle cell myosin, obtained from a cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum, on actin filament, we prepared hybrid thick filaments, in which Dictyostelium myosin was regularly arranged around paramyosin filaments obtained from a molluscan smooth muscle. A single to a few hybrid filaments were attached to a polystyrene bead (diameter, 4.5 μm; specific gravity, 1.5), and the filaments were made to slide on actin filament arrays (actin cables) in the internodal cell of an alga Chara corallina, mounted on the rotor of a centrifuge microscope. The filament-attached bead was observed to move with a constant velocity under a constant external load for many seconds. The steady-state force–velocity relation of Dictyostelium myosin sliding on actin cables was hyperbolic in shape except for large loads ≤0.7–0.8 P0, being qualitatively similar to that of skeletal muscle fibres, despite a considerable variation in the number of myosin molecules interacting with actin cables. Comparison of the P–V curves between Dictyostelium myosin and muscle myosins sliding on actin cables suggests that the time of attachment to actin in a single attachment–detachment cycle is much longer in Dictyostelium myosin than in muscle myosins.  相似文献

This article reviews the utilization of first and second-generation biofuels as the suitable alternatives to depleting fossil fuels. Then the concern has been presented over a debate on most serious problem arising from the production of these biofuels; which is the increase of food market prices because of the increased use of arable land for the cultivation of biomass used for the production of first and second-generation biofuels. The solution to this debate has been suggested with the use of non-arable land for the cultivation of algal biomass for the generation of third generation biofuels. The recent research and developments in the cultivation of algal biomass and their use for biofuel production have been discussed.  相似文献

The use of ultrasound for the control of algae and in particular for Microcystis aeruginosa has been investigated. The results indicate that sonication may provide a more environmentally friendly and more effective method for the control of cyanobacteria blooms than conventional treatments.Algae blooms occur frequently and globally in water bodies and are a major concern in terms of their effects on other species such as plants, fish and other microorganisms together with the potential danger to human health from cyanobacterial toxins that are carcinogenic. In addition to removing the algae itself ultrasound can also degrade such toxins. A range of ultrasonic conditions (in terms of frequency and intensity) have been studied under laboratory conditions together with a small number of pilot (field) studies that confirm the potential for ultrasonic treatment of algae on a large scale.  相似文献

Blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis, have had detrimental impacts on the coastal Gulf of Mexico for decades. Detection of Karenia brevis blooms uses an ecological approach based on anomalies derived from ocean color imagery. The same anomaly product used in Florida produces frequent false positives on the Texas coast. These failures occurred during wind-driven resuspension events. During these events resuspension of benthic algae significantly increases chlorophyll concentrations in the water, resulting in confusion with normal water column phytoplankton, such as Karenia. A method was developed to separate the resuspended chlorophyll from the water column chlorophyll, decreasing the false positives used with the detection method.  相似文献

Development of tolerance against toxic cyanobacteria in Daphnia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We tested whether previous exposure to a toxic strain of cyanobacteria (Microcystis) affects survival, growth, and reproduction of a common herbivore, Daphnia magna. Samples from three natural populations of D. magna were each divided into two parts; one part was fed a mixture of toxic Microcystis and the non-toxic green alga Scenedesmus whereas the other part was fed only Scenedesmus. After four weeks, we compared the ability of these two populations to withstand the toxic Microcystis by assessing survivorship, growth, and reproduction. We found that the ability of D. magna to cope successfully with toxic Microcystis is improved if the animals have experienced previous exposure to toxic Microcystis. This suggests that the toxin may less affect the D. magna populations that are repeatedly exposed to toxic cyanobacteria in their natural habitat than populations lacking prior exposure. Since the ability to tolerate toxins is manifested in both improved survival and larger size of the animals, it may have considerable impact on zooplankton community composition in fresh-waters.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted with natural plankton assemblages from two areas in Great South Bay (GSB) and the Peconic Bays Estuary System, NY, to compare the rates of growth and pelagic grazing mortality of Aureococcus anophagefferens with co-occurring phytoplankton. We hypothesized that A. anophagefferens would experience low mortality rates by microbial herbivores (relative to feeding pressure on other algae) thus providing it with a competitive advantage within the phytoplankton community. In fact, substantial rates of mortality were observed in nearly every experiment in our study. However, mortality rates of A. anophagefferens were less than intrinsic growth rates of the alga during late spring and early summer in Great South Bay, resulting in positive net growth rates for the alga during that period. This timing coincided with the development of a brown tide in this estuary. Similarly, growth rates of the alga also exceeded mortality rates during bloom development in natural plankton assemblages from the Peconic Bays Estuary System held in mesocosms. In contrast to the situation for A. anophagefferens, growth rates of the total phytoplankton assemblage, and another common picoplanktonic phytoplankter (Synechococcus spp.), were frequently less than their respective mortality rates. Mortality rates of A. anophagefferens in both systems were similar to growth rates of the alga during later stages of the bloom. Laboratory studies confirmed that species of phagotrophic protists that consume A. anophagefferens (at least in culture) are present during brown tides but preference for or against the alga appears to be species-specific among phagotrophic protists. We conclude that two scenarios may explain our results: (1) protistan species capable of consuming the brown tide alga were present at low abundances during bloom initiation and thus not able to respond rapidly to increases in the intrinsic growth rate of the alga, or (2) the brown tide alga produced substance(s) that inhibited or retarded protistan grazing activities during the period of bloom initiation. The latter scenario seems less likely given that significant mortality of A. anophagefferens was measured during our field study and mesocosm experiment. However, even a minor reduction in mortality rate due to feeding selectivity among herbivores might result in a mismatch between growth and grazing of A. anophagefferens that could give rise to significant net population growth of this HAB species. Either scenario infers an important role for trophic interactions within the plankton as a factor explaining the development of brown tides in natural ecosystems.  相似文献
