The libraries of bacterial 16SrRNA gene fragment from algal–bacterial consortia of the White Sea coastal zone are analyzed. Up to 3% of the reads have revealed to correspond to eukaryotic rRNA. They related to following main eukaryotic clades: Discoba, Stramenopiles, Ciliata, Amoebozoa, and Nucletmycea. Amoebae, especially Vermamoeba, were present in all samples. In one sample, heterolobose amoeba Paravahlkampfia was detected. These microorganisms are parasites of microalgae, which can induce significant damage to industrial cultures. However, the data on their physiology and distribution are scarce. This study provides new evidence about the diversity of herbivorous eukaryotic microorganisms in natural algal‐containing consortia.  相似文献

Summary The nucleomorph is a unique self-replicating organelle which is invariably present in the periplastidal compartment of cryptomonads. The nucleomorph ofCryptomonas abbreviata is located in a groove on the inner face of the pyrenoid. When JB-4-embedded sections ofC. abbreviata are stained with 4-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), the nucleomorph exhibits a blue fluorescence characteristic of DNA-DAPI complexes. This fluorescence is removed by DNase digestion, but not by RNase. When cells are prepared for electron microscopy by the method of Ryter and Kellenberger (Schreil 1964), a network of fine DNA-like fibrils is observed in the nucleomorph matrix. It is estimated that the nucleomorph contains between 108 and 109 daltons of DNA. The presence of DNA in nucleomorphs strongly supports the hypothesis that the nucleomorph is the vestigial nucleus of a eukaryotic endosymbiont. It is postulated that this eukaryotic symbiont was an ancestral red alga or an organism closely related to red algae. The cryptomonad host cell, on the other hand, is not evolutionarily close to any other group of algae.  相似文献

Currently, very few studies address the relationship between diversity and biomass/lipid production in primary producer communities for biofuel production. Basic studies on the growth of microalgal communities, however, provide evidence of a positive relationship between diversity and biomass production. Recent studies have also shown that positive diversity–productivity relationships are related to an increase in the efficiency of light use by diverse microalgal communities. Here, we hypothesize that there is a relationship between diversity, light use, and microalgal lipid production in phytoplankton communities. Microalgae from all major freshwater algal groups were cultivated in treatments that differed in species richness and functional group richness. Polycultures with high functional group richness showed more efficient light use and higher algal lipid content with increasing species richness. There was a clear correlation between light use and lipid production in functionally diverse communities. Hence, a powerful and cost‐effective way to improve biofuel production might be accomplished by incorporating diversity related, resource‐use‐dynamics into algal biomass production.  相似文献

Chlorella fusca (Shihira et Krauss) strain C-1.1.10 was grown under three different light qualities (red, white or blue light) in homocontinuous cultures. Under electron microscopy, blue light cultures showed enlarged cells, thinner cell walls and lower starch content than red light cells. Under blue light, the degree of stacking of the thylakoid membranes was significantly lower than under white or red light conditions. Changing the light from blue to red the ratio of exposed to appressed membranes was doubled. Compared to red light cells, blue light cells exhibited higher photosynthetic rates per chlorophyll molecule and contained less chlorophyll per dry weight. Blue light stimulated the content of soluble protein as well as that of soluble carbohydrates. The dry weight productivity per unit time was enhanced under blue light conditions. The thylakoid protein complexes which are generally assumed to be localized in the exposed membranes were found in higher concentrations under blue light than under red light. In blue light, both the Photosystem II/Photosystem I ratio and the ratio of light-harvesting chlorophyll protein to P-700 chlorophyll a -protein were lower than in red light. Blue light cells contained twice the concentration of cytochrome f , which correlates well with their higher photosynthetic capacity. When altering the light quality, the degree of change in the reaction center complexes was much lower than expected given the corresponding degree of change in the ratio of exposed to appressed membranes. These results are discussed in light of the question as to whether the variation in the stoichiometry of the laterally distributed complexes can be explained by changes in the degree of stacking alone.  相似文献

Ecological stoichiometry suggests that herbivore growth is limited by phosphorus when this element in the diet is < 8.6 μg P mg C?1 (C : P atomic ratio > 300). However, in nature, it is not necessarily related to the relative phosphorus content in diets. This may be the result of complex feeding and assimilation responses to diets. We examined these possibilities using herbivorous plankton fed mono‐specific and mixed algae varying in phosphorus content of 1.6 to 8.1 μg P mg C?1. The herbivores showed a 10‐fold growth rate difference among the diets. Growth rates related poorly with phosphorus content in the diets (r2 = 0.07), better with P ingestion rate (r2 = 0.41) and best with phosphorus assimilation rate (r2 = 0.69). Inclusion of assimilation rates for carbon and fatty acids increased 7% of the explained growth variance. These results indicate that the feeding and assimilation flexibilities play pivotal roles in acquiring a deficient element and in regulating growth rate.  相似文献

温度是影响节旋藻大规模培养中生物质产率的重要因素。筛选高产和耐受温度胁迫的优良藻株对提高节旋藻产量具有重要意义。从生产规模跑道池中分离到形态特征差异显著而亲缘关系很近的两株节旋藻Arthrospira sp.DICP-D(D)和Arthrospira sp.DICP-F(F),对其生物质积累性能和对低温、高温胁迫的耐受能力进行了评估。结果显示,尽管藻株D和藻株F在正常条件下拥有相似的生物质组成,在N胁迫和低温胁迫下拥有相同的碳水化合物积累能力,然而藻株D的生物质产率比相同条件下的藻株F高33%~230%。藻株D对高温胁迫的耐受能力是藻株F的2.1倍。藻株D在41℃和15℃下的生物质产率分别维持在正常温度下的73%和61%,显示其对温度胁迫的良好耐受能力。藻株D比藻株F拥有更有效的光保护机制,使其能够更好地适应胁迫环境。藻株D在生物质产率和胁迫耐受能力上的优良性状使其在户外大规模培养中具有良好的应用前景。  相似文献

Algicidal bacteria in the sea and their impact on algal blooms   总被引:23,自引:0,他引:23  
Over the past two decades, many reports have revealed the existence of bacteria capable of killing phytoplankton. These algicidal bacteria sometimes increase in abundance concurrently with the decline of algal blooms, suggesting that they may affect algal bloom dynamics. Here, we synthesize the existing knowledge on algicidal bacteria interactions with marine eukaryotic microalgae. We discuss the effectiveness of the current methods to characterize the algicidal phenotype in an ecosystem context. We briefly consider the literature on the phylogenetic identification of algicidal bacteria, their interaction with their algal prey, the characterization of algicidal molecules, and the enumeration of algicidal bacteria during algal blooms. We conclude that, due to limitations of current methods, the evidence for algicidal bacteria causing algal bloom decline is circumstantial. New methods and an ecosystem approach are needed to test hypotheses on the impact of algicidal bacteria in algal bloom dynamics. This will require enlarging the scope of inquiry from its current focus on the potential utility of algicidal bacteria in the control of harmful algal blooms. We suggest conceptualizing bacterial algicidy within the general problem of bacterial regulation of algal community structure in the ocean.  相似文献

The potential for asexual reproduction throughproduction of tubers was evaluated in various races ofan International Hydrilla [Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.)Royle] germplasm collection. Interracecomparisons were made under both shortday and longdayphotoperiods in environmental growth chambers. Allthe races evaluated produced rates varying from91-7182 tubers per sq m of production under shortdayconditions. Tuber production occurred under longdayphotoperiods in several races. Seedlings of the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle L., were subjected to a variety of salinity, light, and plant growth regulator treatments to examine the influence of these factors on early development. Stem, leaf, and root growth were significantly enhanced in both low salinity seawater and under reduced intensities of solar radiation. Semi-quantitative analyses of GAs by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbant assays (ELISA) suggest that under these conditions the early 3/13 hydroxylation GA1 biosynthetic pathway is predominant in R. mangle. Concentrations of GA1 and GA19-like substances were highest in propagules exhibiting enhanced development. Attempts to identify the endogenous GAs by GC-MS were unsuccessful, most likely due to undetermined impurities present in mangroves. Exogenous applications of GA3 to R. mangle were moderately successful in alleviating shoot growth inhibitions observed at higher salinities and light levels. The role of gibberellins is discussed in terms of metabolic responses to the external environment and possible impacts upon the distribution of this species.  相似文献
