Oil shale mining and processing in northeast Estonia have brought about several ecological problems. The mined oil shale is used as fuel in power stations and in processing plants producing crude oil and about 40 manufactured articles. Pollutants emitted from oil shale processing and chemical plants include SO2, CO, NO x , oil shale fly ash, and organic compounds in which aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, phenols, formaldehyde, etc., are represented. Pollution has caused changes in the condition of the forest ecosystem and the chemical character of soil and ground water. The condition of coniferous forest sites was investigated in 1995–1998. Because of the high concentration of alkaline fly ash in the air, the pH of rain water is somewhat elevated (pH = 7.0–7.1) and exceeds the level regarded as normal for rain water. The analysis of the soil samples showed that the concentrations of Ca, Mg and K, which dominate in the solid fraction of the pollutant mixture, are high, being respectively 18, 14, and 4 times as high as the control. The increases in the concentrations of K, Mg, Cu, Pb, and Ni in stemwood reflect increases in the regional oil shale fly ash deposition. Conifers influenced by high levels of air pollution emitted from the oil shale industry are characterized by retarded growth of needles and shoots and radial growth as a result of disturbances in their mineral nutrition and imbalance in their mineral composition.  相似文献

Organisms often exhibit transgenerational phenotypic changes in response to an increased risk of parasitism or predation. Shifts in global atmospheric composition could modify these phenotypic effects through changes in either nutrient quantity/quality or altered interactions with higher trophic levels. Here we show that future atmospheric conditions alter a natural enemy‐induced wing polyphenism in aphids. Winged offspring production by Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum aphids on goldenrod (Solidago canadensis var. scabra) does not differ in enriched CO2 and/or O3 atmospheres. However, proportionally more winged offspring are produced in response to search cues from both coccinellid predators (Coccinella septempunctata) and hymenopteran parasitoids (Aphidius polygonaphis) relative to plants not searched by natural enemies. Moreover, the magnitude of this response differs under enriched CO2 and O3 environments. Aphids produce more winged offspring in response to predators under elevated CO2, but produce more winged offspring in response to parasitoids under elevated O3. Thus, global atmospheric changes influence natural enemy‐mediated phenotypic expression, with potentially far‐reaching consequences for trophic dynamics.  相似文献

目的通过对10只幼猴粪便正常菌群的测定,了解幼猴肠道正常菌群的分布情况,为猕猴肠道疾病的治疗和微生态制剂的开发提供一定理论依据.方法用微生态学检测方法,对10只健康幼猴粪便中正常菌群(9种细菌)进行定性、定量分析.结果在健康幼猴肠道中,双歧杆菌(10.02±0.25)、类杆菌(10.00±0.09)、韦荣球菌(9.96±0.31)、肠球菌(9.98±0.43)和梭杆菌(9.90±0.24)为优势菌群,而肠杆菌(7.32±1.49)、葡萄球菌(5.74±0.49)和酵母菌(5.42±1.47)含量则较少.结论该实验测出健康幼猴粪便内正常菌群值可作为健康幼猴肠道内正常菌群值的参考.  相似文献

Numerous reports indicate that pollution stress caused by sulphur dioxide (SO2), oxies of nitrogen or fluorides promote aphid growth on herbaceous and woody plants. At SO2 exposures, the response curve of aphids is bell-shaped having the peak at 100 ppb. This curvilinear response is related to physiological stress responses of host plants exposed to pollutants. On the other hand, observations of aphid performance on ozone-exposed (O3) or elevated carbon dioxide-exposed (CO2) plants have given very variable results. Depending on the duration and concentration of O3 or elevated CO2 exposure or the age of the exposed plants, aphid growth on the same plants either decreased or increased in comparison to growth on control plants grown in filtered air. The results of these studies suggest that there is no general air pollution-induced plant stress that triggers aphid outbreaks on plants. Plants grown in elevated CO2 usually have higher C/N ratios than plants grown in current ambient CO2 atmosphere. A reduced proportion of nitrogen in the plant foliage decreases growth of chewing herbivorous insects, but the few studies of elevated CO2 effects on sucking insects such as aphids have not yielded similar consistent effects. The present paper reviews recent studies of elevated CO2 effects on aphids and discusses the effects of combined elevated O3 and CO2 exposures on aphid performance on woody plants using pine and birch aphids as examples.  相似文献

Photosynthetic capacity and leaf properties of sun and shade leaves of overstorey sweetgum trees (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) were compared over the first 3 years of growth in ambient or ambient + 200 μL L?1 CO2 at the Duke Forest Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiment. We were interested in whether photosynthetic down‐regulation to CO2 occurred in sweetgum trees growing in a forest ecosystem, whether shade leaves down‐regulated to a greater extent than sun leaves, and if there was a seasonal component to photosynthetic down‐regulation. During June and September of each year, we measured net photosynthesis (A) versus the calculated intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) in situ and analysed these response curves using a biochemical model that described the limitations imposed by the amount and activity of ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Vcmax) and by the rate of ribulose‐1,5‐bisphosphate (RuBP) regeneration mediated by electron transport (Jmax). There was no evidence of photosynthetic down‐regulation to CO2 in either sun or shade leaves of sweetgum trees over the 3 years of measurements. Elevated CO2 did not significantly affect Vcmax or Jmax. The ratio of Vcmax to Jmax was relatively constant, averaging 2·12, and was not affected by CO2 treatment, position in the canopy, or measurement period. Furthermore, CO2 enrichment did not affect leaf nitrogen per unit leaf area (Na), chlorophyll or total non‐structural carbohydrates of sun or shade leaves. We did, however, find a strong relationship between Na and the modelled components of photosynthetic capacity, Vcmax and Jmax. Our data over the first 3 years of this experiment corroborate observations that trees rooted in the ground may not exhibit symptoms of photosynthetic down‐regulation as quickly as tree seedlings growing in pots. There was a strong sustained enhancement of photosynthesis by CO2 enrichment whereby light‐saturated net photosynthesis of sun leaves was stimulated by 63% and light‐saturated net photosynthesis of shade leaves was stimulated by 48% when averaged over the 3 years. This study suggests that this CO2 enhancement of photosynthesis will be sustained in the Duke Forest FACE experiment as long as soil N availability keeps pace with photosynthetic and growth processes.  相似文献

The occurrence, vertical distribution, and physiological state of microorganisms in a petrochemical oily sludge deposit were studied. The total number and the number of viable microbial cells at depths of 0.2 and 3 m were about 1010 and 108 cells/g dry wt sludge. Most microbial cells taken from the middle (1 m deep) and the bottom (3 m deep) sludge horizons showed a delayed colony-forming ability, which suggested that the cells occurred in a hypometabolic state. The relative number of microaerobic denitrifying microorganisms steeply increased with depth. The amount of microorganisms tolerant to 3, 5, and 10% NaCl and capable of growing at 7 and 40°C varied from 102 to 108 CFU/g dry wt sludge. Petrochemical oily sludge was found to maintain the growth of heterotrophs, among which the degraders of oily sludge and ten different individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were detected. The occurrence of highly adaptable microorganisms with an adequate metabolic potential in the petrochemical oily sludge deposit implies that its bioremediation is possible without introducing special microorganisms.  相似文献

Publicly available databases are analysed to demonstrate their relevance to life cycle inventory for energy production in the Canadian context. Site specific emissions along with sectoral emissions data are combined with production data to construct an energy production model, which has been applied to air emissions. The allocation procedure leads to reasonable results for coal, natural gas and electricity. The detailed allocation of the inventory among petroleum co-products is outside the scope of this study as it requires incorporating knowledge of physical relationship (unit process) or using economic data.  相似文献
