AIMS: Synthetic sodium alpha,beta-polyaspartate (PA) has been investigated as a moderator of adhesion and the subsequent biofilm formation by oral bacteria. METHODS AND RESULTS: The inhibition of bacterial adhesion by PA was assessed by (i) a 30-min incubation with Streptococcus sanguis in a microtitre assay with the wells coated with hydroxyapatite (HAP) and (ii) an 18-h challenge with human salivary microflora in a HAP disc assay. In contrast to HAP-coated surfaces, clean polystyrene surfaces in the microtitre assay exhibited no anti-adhesion properties. It has been found that PA significantly and similarly adsorbs onto HAP surfaces in the presence and absence of salivary coating. The HAP disc assay also showed that PA, both in aqueous solutions and in toothpaste, reduced the level of adhered microflora and this effect was enhanced by added propylene oxide-ethylene oxide copolymers. CONCLUSION: The principal finding from this work is the potential role for PA as an inhibitor of dental plaque formation. PA may significantly modify the salivary pellicle. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This work indicates the use of PA in controlling the development of dental plaque and the formation of bacterial biofilm in general.  相似文献

Hierarchical modeling is becoming increasingly popular in epidemiology, particularly in air pollution studies. When potential confounding exists, a multilevel model yields better power to assess the independent effects of each predictor by gathering evidence across many sub-studies. If the predictors are measured with unknown error, bias can be expected in the individual substudies, and in the combined estimates of the second-stage model. We consider two alternative methods for estimating the independent effects of two predictors in a hierarchical model. We show both analytically and via simulation that one of these gives essentially unbiased estimates even in the presence of measurement error, at the price of a moderate reduction in power. The second avoids the potential for upward bias, at the price of a smaller reduction in power. Since measurement error is endemic in epidemiology, these approaches hold considerable potential. We illustrate the two methods by applying them to two air pollution studies. In the first, we re-analyze published data to show that the estimated effect of fine particles on daily deaths, independent of coarse particles, was downwardly biased by measurement error in the original analysis. The estimated effect of coarse particles becomes more protective using the new estimates. In the second example, we use published data on the association between airborne particles and daily deaths in 10 US cities to estimate the effect of gaseous air pollutants on daily deaths. The resulting effect size estimates were very small and the confidence intervals included zero.  相似文献

目的研究生理盐水实验性干预对肉鸡盲肠微生物区系和短链脂肪酸含量的影响,以期为早期菌群干预实验的研究提供一定的理论依据。方法选取80只初出壳的小鸡,随机分为2组,分别为对照组(C组)和生理盐水组(S组)。出壳后前2 d,连续每天给S组小鸡灌服0.5 mL灭菌的生理盐水,C组不做处理。第3天,第7天于两组分别随机挑选8只鸡,测定其体重后屠宰取其盲肠内容物,采用Illumina Miseq高通量测序技术对盲肠内容物菌群结构进行测定,并用气相色谱法测定盲肠内容物中短链脂肪酸的含量。结果生理盐水实验性干预对肉鸡早期阶段的平均日增重无显著影响(P>0.05)。在门的水平上,两组肉鸡盲肠菌群占比基本相似,厚壁菌门(Firmicutes)、变形菌门(Proteobacteria)和拟杆菌门(Bacteroidetes)为早期肉鸡肠道内的优势菌门。在属的水平,3日龄时S组肉鸡盲肠中拟杆菌属(Bacteroides)和蓝细菌属(Cyanobacteria_norank)的相对丰度较C组分别提高了160%和143%(P<0.05);7日龄时,两组间盲肠菌属的相对丰度无显著差异。此外,生理盐水实验性干预可极显著降低3日龄肉鸡盲肠内容物中乙酸、丁酸和异戊酸的含量(P<0.01),但7日龄时两组肉鸡盲肠内容物中短链脂肪酸的含量无显著差异(P>0.05)。结论生理盐水实验性干预会对3日龄肉鸡盲肠菌群结构及短链脂肪酸含量产生一定的影响,但这种影响不具有持续性,随着日龄的增加会逐渐消失。  相似文献

Difference between effects of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) on groundnut plants (Arachis hypogaea L.) was studied by use of an exposure system of enzymatically-isolated mesophyll cells. SO2 inhibited photosynthesis of intact groundnut leaves but induced no visible injury on leaves. SO2 also inhibited photosynthesis of isolated mesophyll cells but did not kill the cells, suggesting that SO2 inhibits photosynthesis by attacking rather specifically the photosynthetic apparatus in chloroplasts. O3 inhibited photosynthesis of intact leaves and at the same time induced visible injury corresponding to the extent of photosynthesis inhibition. O3 also inhibited photosynthesis of isolated mesophyll cells and killed the cells to the extent corresponding to photosynthesis inhibition, suggesting that O3 inhibits photosynthesis not directly by attacking the photosynthetic apparatus but indirectly by killing cells. Since the response of intact leaves to each pollutant resembled that of isolated mesophyll cells, the difference between responses of intact leaves to both pollutants may considerably reflect that of mesophyll cells.  相似文献

Summary The formation and subsequent growth of roots by cuttings of poinsettia, hydrangea, rose and azalea in various propagation media, Jiffy-7, Jiffy-9 and Grodan under different conditions of aeration was investigated. The interrelationships of the effects of air content of the media, temperature and light intensity on the rooting of poinsettia cuttings was also studied.With low air contents (0 cm moisture tension) in the propagation media the formation and growth of roots was strongly inhibited. The rooting performance of rose appeared to be less affected by the poor aeration. Increasing air content improved rooting but best results were obtained at moisture tensions of 4 to 8 cm. Rooting seems to be better correlated with oxygen diffusion rate (ODR) than with air content.For poinsettia cuttings the optimum temperature for rooting was 24 to 28°C. At low temperatures rooting was delayed while at higher temperatures it was almost completely inhibited. Callus formation increased with temperature but decreased with increasing moisture tension. Conditions which induced large callus formation inhibited root formation.High light intensity during rooting reduced overall rooting performance and the inhibition was most pronounced in conjunction with high moisture tensions.Report No. 255.  相似文献

Subarctic forest-tundra vegetation gradients: The sigmoid wave hypothesis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract. Spatial changes in tree and upland tundra cover in response to a complex environmental gradient and to landscape factors were investigated in the high subarctic forest-tundra of NW Canada. Vegetation and terrain studies provided ground truth for a grid of 1314 air photos which covered 24 % of the Canadian high subarctic and some of the adjacent low subarctic and low arctic. Across the high subarctic, gradual spatial change in % cover of tree and upland tundra vegetation is typical at both high and low cover values, with more rapid change occurring at intermediate cover. Cover gradients of zonal tree and tundra vegetation in the forest-tundra region in general follow a sigmoid pattern. Tundra and tree patch sizes increase in area and variability with higher tundra and tree cover, respectively.  相似文献

Summary In studies that estimate the short‐term effects of air pollution on health, daily measurements of pollution concentrations are often available from a number of monitoring locations within the study area. However, the health data are typically only available in the form of daily counts for the entire area, meaning that a corresponding single daily measure of pollution is required. The standard approach is to average the observed measurements at the monitoring locations, and use this in a log‐linear health model. However, as the pollution surface is spatially variable this simple summary is unlikely to be an accurate estimate of the average pollution concentration across the region, which may lead to bias in the resulting health effects. In this article, we propose an alternative approach that jointly models the pollution concentrations and their relationship with the health data using a Bayesian spatio‐temporal model. We compare this approach with the simple spatial average using a simulation study, by investigating the impact of spatial variation, monitor placement, and measurement error in the pollution data. An epidemiological study from Greater London is then presented, which estimates the relationship between respiratory mortality and four different pollutants.  相似文献

Exposure of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L. cv. Monosa) to 0.25 μl l?1 H2S reduced the relative growth rate by 26, 47 and 60% at 15, 18 and 25°C, respectively. Shoot to root ratio decreased in plants fumigated at 18 and 25°C. Growth of spinach was not affected by a 2-week exposure to 0.10 or 0.25 μl l?1 SO2. Both H2S and SO2 fumigation increased the content of sulfhydryl compounds and sulfate. A 2-week exposure to 0.25 μl l?1 H2S resulted in an increase in sulfhydryl and sulfate content of 250 to 450% and 63 to 248% in the shoots, respectively, depending on growth temperature. Exposure to 0.15 and 0.30 μl l?1 H2S at 20°C for 2 weeks resulted in a 46% increase in sulfate content of the shoots at 0.30 μl l?1 and no detectable increase at 0.15 μl l?1 H2S; the sulfate content of the roots increased by 195 and 145% at 0.15 and 0.30 μl l?1 H2S, respectively. Fumigation with 0.25 μl l?1 SO2 at 20°C for 2 weeks resulted in an increase in sulfhydryl content and sulfate content in the shoots of 285% and 300 to 1100%. H2S fumigation during the 12 h light period or only during the dark period resulted in identical growth reduction and accumulation of sulfhydryl compounds; they were about 50 and 67% of those observed in continuously exposed plants. H2S- and SO2-exposed plants showed an increased transpiration rate, which was mainly caused by an increased dark-period transpiration. No effect of H2S and SO2 on the water uptake of the plants and the osmotic potential of the leaves was detected. Plants fumigated with 0.25 μl l?1 H2S for 2 weeks were smaller and differed morphologically from the control plants by slightly more abaxially curved leaf margins. Cross sections of the leaves showed smaller cells at the margins and smaller and fewer air spaces. The increased transpiration in the H2S-exposed plants is discussed in relation to the observed morphological changes.  相似文献
