Populations of two rhizomatous species, Asarum europaeum (asarabacca) and Maianthemum bifolium (May lily), were examined in two, and four forest habitats respectively, in the Roztocze National Park (south-eastern Poland). May lily populations were studied in habitats: the Carpathian beechwood, upland mixed fir forest, subboreal moist mixed coniferous forest and bog-alder forest. Asarabacca was studied in two habitats: beechwood and Scots pine community (an 80-year-old plantation). In both the species studied intra- and inter-populational differences of the size of genets in terms of above- and below-ground parts of individuals as well as the biomass and area occupied were observed. In May lily populations the greatest mean number of shoots per genet was found in the fir forest (11.62±3.29), a value almost twice as great as that in the moist coniferous forest and nearly three times greater than in the bog-alder forest. Total rhizome length was also the greatest in the fir forest (351.9±98.7 cm) followed by moist coniferous forest, beechwood and alder forest habitats. In all populations of May lily a greater part of total dry weight biomass is in below-ground organs. The greatest biomass value of a genet was found in the fir forest (4.275 g), the smallest in the bog-alder forest (0.110 g). All populations differed significantly in terms of leaf area, leaf length (with the exception of fir forest and beechwood habitats where the values were the greatest), and leaf width (excluding moist coniferous and bog-alder forests which had the smallest values). In the case of asarabacca, both the mean number of ramets per genet (3.36±0.45 vs. 2.49±0.20) and total rhizome length (40.3±6.4 cm vs. 21.1±1.8 cm) were greater in the beechwood habitat than in the pine community. In the first population genets had 3–5 times greater the total biomass of those from the pine community. Only genets of the latter had proportionately more dry weight biomass in above-ground parts. It seems to be correlated with greater rhizome dieback and disintegration of genets into smaller units. Both populations were significantly different in terms of all examined parameters of leaves. Compared with most parts of Europe, northern Sweden is essentially a sparsely populated wilderness. There is, however, an ever increasing body of archaeological and palaeoecological information that shows that the region has a long cultural history. In this paper, results of pollen analytical investigations from four lakes with varved lake sediments, in the province of Ångermanland, are presented. These investigations have yielded evidence of continuous and sedentary agriculture from the 6th century in the region close to the Bothnian coast and near the mouth of the large river Ångermanälven. This early agriculture appears to have been based on animal husbandry and cereal, mainly barley, cultivation. During a second farming expansion phase at ca. A.D. 1200, rye cultivation became more important. The increased farming activity during this period was most pronounced at the coast and in the river valley, but more peripheral regions away from the river valley were also exploited. During the period A.D. 1600–1800, arable farming assumed greater importance. In the first decades of the 20th century, the area under cultivation declined, cereal cultivation mostly ceased and the fields were used for pasture. 相似文献

The analysis of archaeological charcoal is used to reconstruct the wood resources in north-west Portugal from the late Bronze
Age to the Roman period. In this paper, the results obtained from 12 sites are considered, and their implications for interpreting
historical human behaviour towards the natural environment and vegetation are discussed. The results indicate a similar kind
of exploitation of the vegetation by different populations which used a similar range of wood resources. Fifty-one taxa are
identified and three main natural biotopes are distinguished, including mixed oak forest, wasteland vegetation and riparian
forest. The large number of taxa identified seems to testify to the existence of a good sampling of the woody vegetation growing
in the proximity of the settlements. Both dry and fresh wood were used, and the value and possible uses are suggested for

The feeding process of Japanese monkeys on soy beans which were scattered over a sandy beach on Koshima islet was studied.
Younger monkeys were able to pick up more beans when 8 kg of beans were divided and given two times (“two times feeding”)
than when the whole amount (8 kg) of beans was given at one time (“one time feeding”). The effect of saturation of the food
intake capacity in younger monkeys at the first feeding in “two times feeding” did not appear at the second feeding one hour
later. The minutely intake of soy beans (feeding speed) for each age class was analyzed. The decline of feeding speed in adult
females after the peak in “one time feeding” was not related to the decline in density of beans on the ground, and this decline
was caused by saturation of their food intake capacity.
Adult females were divided into four classes according to their dominance rank order: high, lower-high, higher-low, and low
classes. The total amount of intake in “one time feeding” was far larger in the high class than in any of the other classes.
The total amount of feeding in the first feeding of “two times feeding” increased in accordance with rise in the dominance
rank class, and there was no relation to rank and total feeding amount in the second feeding of “two times feeding.” Differences
existed in the process of feeding between the rank classes. The feeding speed of the low class was as high as that of the
high class on the curve of minutely intake, while the low class stopped feeding much earlier than the high class. The lower-high
class displayed a low feeding speed, and stopped feeding the latest. The order of the duration to stay and to feed in the
feeding area was lower-high > high > higher-low > low, and this order did not change under the three different feeding conditions,
“one time feeding,” and the first and second feedings of “two times feeding.” Adolescent females tended to stay the longest
duration in the feeding area among all age classes. Both the lower-high class females and adolescent females had an unstable
social status in the Koshima group, and their social status affected their feeding behaviors. The feeding behaviors were similar
in attitude depending on social status, and are considered to be maintained for a fairly long time.
The feeding strategy of the lower-high class, in staying a longer duration in the artificial feeding area, and departing later,
may be effective under the artificial feeding conditions, but it may be a bad strategy in a natural habitat where the food
is not so clumped as in artificial feeding, and where choice of other food patches is possible. The above results agree well
with previous reports for the Koshima group, indicating that the rank of the lower-high class females was unstable (Mori et al., 1989), and that their reproductive success was low (Watanabe et al., 1992). 相似文献

Populations of bluegill sunfish Lepomis macrochirus , experiencing heavy juvenile predation, showed increased growth rates and increased age and size at maturity relative to populations experiencing decreased predation on juveniles but increased predation on adults. This study examined bluegills experimentally from both types of populations and a cross between them in a common environment to determine if variation in growth and age at maturity is genetically or environmentally induced. Two factorial experiments, varying strain of bluegills and resource availability, were used to evaluate differences in growth rate. One experiment, varying strain of bluegills, was used to assess differences in age at maturity. Growth was strongly influenced by resource level, but growth rate did not vary among populations. Nearly all bluegills in each population matured at 1 year of age in a common environment. Thus, variation observed in source populations must be mostly attributable to differences in the environment between populations. At least three factors could potentially cause differences in growth and age at maturity: (1) variation in resource availability; (2) variation in demographic structure; and (3) variation in size-specific mortality rates caused by differences in predator abundance between populations. Several maximum likelihood and distance matrix methods for estimating phylogenetic trees from homologous DNA sequences were compared when substitution rates at sites were assumed to follow a gamma distribution. Computer simulations were performed to estimate the probabilities that various tree estimation methods recover the true tree topology. The case of four species was considered, and a few combinations of parameters were examined. Attention was applied to discriminating among different sources of error in tree reconstruction, i.e., the inconsistency of the tree estimation method, the sampling error in the estimated tree due to limited sequence length, and the sampling error in the estimated probability due to the number of simulations being limited. Compared to the least squares method based on pairwise distance estimates, the joint likelihood analysis is found to be more robust when rate variation over sites is present but ignored and an assumption is thus violated. With limited data, the likelihood method has a much higher probability of recovering the true tree and is therefore more efficient than the least squares method. The concept of statistical consistency of a tree estimation method and its implications were explored, and it is suggested that, while the efficiency (or sampling error) of a tree estimation method is a very important property, statistical consistency of the method over a wide range of, if not all, parameter values is prerequisite. 相似文献

Degradation of quinoline by immobilized Comamonas acidovorans in a three-phase airlift reactor 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Quinolie degradation by Comamonas acidovorans was studied in a continuously operated three-phase airlift reactor. Porous glass beads were applied as support matrix for cell imobilization by colonization. Under steady-state conditions (S approximately 0), cell attachment was poor at low dilution rates but imporved considerably with increasing dilution rate. Conversion of quinoline was investigated below and above the washout for suspended culture (D(crit) = mu(max) = 0.42 h(-1)). With immobilized cells the reactor could be operated at D > mu(max), and complete conversion of quinoline was achieved as long as the specific quinoline feed rate D*S(0)/X did not exceed the maximum specific degradation rate (r(S, max)). The biofilm thickness was about 100 mum, and its efficiency was about 54% compared to suspended organisms. If quinoline overloads were supplied to the reactor, quinoline, as overloads were supplied to the reactor, quinoline, as well as its pathway intermediates, appeared in the reactor and conversion was low. Hence, the immobilized microorganisms remained viable and active. They could survive quinoline overloads. If the quinoline feed rate was reduced agains, complete conversion was reestablished. Summary The present experiments report differences in in vitro nuclear binding affinity for L-tryptophan 1) between livers of young (6 1/2 weeks old) and older (30 weeks old) NZBWF1 mice, but not so in similar aged Swiss mice, and also, 2) in livers of hamsters compared to livers of guinea pigs. In vitro hepatic nuclear specific binding affinity after tube-feeding L-tryptophan (520mg/100g body weight) to mice 1 h before killing revealed less in young than in older NZWBF1 mice, comparable to the above in vitro assay studies. In vitro nuclear binding affinity for L-tryptophan of livers of hamsters was significantly less than that of livers of guinea pigs or Swiss mice. In general, the degree of stimulatory effect on hepatic protein synthesis, as measured by in vitro [14C]leucine incorporation into protein using microsomes of animals tube-fed L-tryptophan 1 h before killing compared to that of animals tubefed water, correlated with the basal nuclear specific binding affinity to L-tryptophan of the animals (ages and species) used.This study was supported by U.S. Public Health Service Research Grant DK-45353 from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. 相似文献
