Traumatic insemination (TI) is a rare reproductive behaviour characterized by the transfer of sperm to the female via puncture wounds inflicted across her body wall. Here, we challenge the claim made by Kamimura (Kamimura 2007 Biol. Lett. 3, 401–404. (doi:10.1098/rsbl.2007.0192)) that males of species of the Drosophila bipectinata complex use a pair of claw-like processes (claws) to traumatically inseminate females: the claws are purported to puncture the female body wall and genital tract, and to inject sperm through the wounds into the lumen of her genital tract, bypassing the vaginal opening. This supposed case of TI is widely cited and featured in prominent subject reviews. We examined high-resolution scanning electron micrographs of the claws and failed to discover any obvious ‘groove’ for sperm transport. We demonstrated that sperm occurred in the female reproductive tract as a single-integrated unit, inconsistent with the claim that sperm are injected via paired processes. Laser ablation of the sharp terminal ends of the claws failed to inhibit insemination. We showed that the aedeagus in the complex delivers sperm through the vaginal opening, as in other Drosophila. 目的分析在有效抗炎基础上定期补充乳杆菌活菌胶囊对哺乳期需氧菌性阴道炎患者的疗效及对远期复发率的影响。方法选择2019年4月至2020年3月于大连市妇女儿童医疗中心(集团)行产后42 d检查时发现的需氧菌性阴道炎患者共120例,按照随机自愿原则将所选患者分为观察组及对照组,各60例。全部患者均使用红核妇洁洗液及克林霉素磷酸酯阴道凝胶抗炎治疗7 d,观察组患者于第8天开始给予阴道用乳杆菌活菌胶囊每日睡前上药1粒,治疗10 d,停药后1周对两组患者进行临床疗效评估并了解不良反应发生情况。于首次治疗结束后第3个月及第6个月进行定期随诊,了解两组患者阴道炎的复发情况。且观察组患者于治疗后第3个月随诊结束后再次给予阴道用乳杆菌活菌胶囊补充上药1疗程。记录并比较两组患者治疗前、治疗后1周、治疗后第3个月及第6个月阴道pH值及H2O2情况。结果两组患者治疗期间均未发生明显不良反应。治疗后1周观察组患者治愈率(66.7%)显著高于对照组(36.7%),差异有统计学意义(P<0.05);观察组总有效率(95.0%)与对照组(86.7%)比较差异无统计学意义... 相似文献

Excellent preservation and new structural details can be demonstrated in rust-infected leaf tissue after high pressure freezing and freeze-fracturing. A tubular-vesicular complex was the most remarkable cytoplasmic structure observed in cells of the bean rust fungus Uromyces appendiculatus var. appendiculatus during its establishement in its host Phaseolus vulgaris. In fungal cells undergoing intensive synthesis of wall material, this membranous system extended throughout the cytoplasm; in addition, vesicles were accumulated adjacent to the plasma membrane. Here, membrane-associated configurations were observed which seem to be involved in exo- and/or endocytotic processes. The underwater light field is described as a stochastic process, with the vertical attenuation as a random variable. It is shown that the vertical attenuation integral is well described as a Normal process with uncorrelated increments. The attenuation processes within a water body are found to be quite independent of the incoming irradiance. Thus, the relative light intensity at any depth can be approximated by a Lognormal random variable. Based upon the expectation of this Lognormal variable, and the mean value of the incident irradiance, the irradiance delivered at any depth can be estimated, as well as the statistical distribution of the irradiance. Light data from a number of Norwegian soft-water lakes showed good fit to the model. Two productive lakes included in this study also had a light regime well described by the statistical model. Multivariate failure time data are frequently encountered in longitudinal studies when subjects may experience several events or when there is a grouping of individuals into a cluster. To take into account the dependence of the failure times within the unit (the individual or the cluster) as well as censoring, two multivariate generalizations of the Cox proportional hazards model are commonly used. The marginal hazard model is used when the purpose is to estimate mean regression parameters, while the frailty model is retained when the purpose is to assess the degree of dependence within the unit. We propose a new approach based on the combination of the two aforementioned models to estimate both these quantities. This two-step estimation procedure is quicker and more simple to implement than the EM algorithm used in frailty models estimation. Simulation results are provided to illustrate robustness, consistency, and large-sample properties of estimators. Finally, this method is exemplified on a diabetic retinopathy study in order to assess the effect of photocoagulation in delaying the onset of blindness as well as the dependence between the two eyes blindness times of a patient. 相似文献

Many chronic medical conditions can be meaningfully characterized in terms of a two-state stochastic process. Here we consider the problem in which subjects make transitions among two such states in continuous time but are only observed at discrete, irregularly spaced time points that are possibly unique to each subject. Data arising from such an observation scheme are called panel data, and methods for related analyses are typically based on Markov assumptions. The purpose of this article is to present a conditionally Markov model that accommodates subject-to-subject variation in the model parameters by the introduction of random effects. We focus on a particular random effects formulation that generates a closed-form expression for the marginal likelihood. Cyanobacteria are versatile tetrapyrrole synthesizers that can regulate their tetrapyrrole content and composition in response to environmental signals. The present investigation analyses the interplay between light and dark regimes (continuous light, light-dark cycles (16:8) and continuous darkness) and aerobic, air-tight, and anaerobic environments (argon-enriched), on the relative composition of various pigments and growth attributes of Calothrix elenkenii as a prelude to exploiting C. elenkenii's bioindustrial potential as a source of pigments. Incubation in an anaerobic environment stimulated hormogonia formation and induced colouration/thickening of cells. Aerobically grown cultures of Calothrix, under continuous illumination produced the maximum amount of total phycobiliproteins and sugars, although chlorophyll accumulation and nitrogenase activity were highest in the light-dark environment. However, the beta-carotene content was observed to vary under anaerobic conditions with different light-dark regimes. This paper is designed to provide an overview of the main membrane-assisted processes that can be used for the removal of toxic inorganic anions from drinking water supplies. The emphasis has been placed on integrated process solutions, including the emerging issue of membrane bioreactors. An attempt is made to compare critically recently reported results, reveal the best existing membrane technologies and identify the most promising integrated membrane bio/processes currently being under investigation. Selected examples are discussed in each case with respect to their advantages and limitations compared to conventional methods for removal of anionic pollutants. The use of membranes is particularly attractive for separating ions between two liquid phases (purified and concentrated water streams) because many of the difficulties associated with precipitation, coagulation or adsorption and phase separation can be avoided. Therefore, membrane technologies are already successfully used on large-scale for removal of inorganic anions such as nitrate, fluoride, arsenic species, etc. The concentrated brine discharge and/or treatment, however, can be problematic in many cases. Membrane bioreactors allow for complete depollution but water quality, insufficiently stable process operation, and economical reasons still limit their wider application in drinking water treatment. The development of more efficient membranes, the design of cost-effective operating conditions, especially long-term operations without or with minimal membrane inorganic and/or biological fouling, and reduction of the specific energy consumption requirements are the major challenges. 相似文献

Human activities are causing widespread changes in the species composition of natural and managed ecosystems, but the consequences of these changes are poorly understood. This paper presents a conceptual framework for predicting the ecosystem and regional consequences of changes in plant species composition. Changes in species composition have greatest ecological effects when they modify the ecological factors that directly control (and respond to) ecosystem processes. These interactive controls include: functional types of organisms present in the ecosystem; soil resources used by organisms to grow and reproduce; modulators such as microclimate that influence the activity of organisms; disturbance regime; and human activities. Plant traits related to size and growth rate are particularly important because they determine the productive capacity of vegetation and the rates of decomposition and nitrogen mineralization. Because the same plant traits affect most key processes in the cycling of carbon and nutrients, changes in plant traits tend to affect most biogeochemical cycling processes in parallel. Plant traits also have landscape and regional effects through their effects on water and energy exchange and disturbance regime. 相似文献

Adaptive evolutionary conservation: towards a unified concept for defining conservation units 总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
Recent years have seen a debate over various methods that could objectively prioritize conservation value below the species level. Most prominent among these has been the evolutionarily significant unit (ESU). We reviewed ESU concepts with the aim of proposing a more unified concept that would reconcile opposing views. Like species concepts, conflicting ESU concepts are all essentially aiming to define the same thing: segments of species whose divergence can be measured or evaluated by putting differential emphasis on the role of evolutionary forces at varied temporal scales. Thus, differences between ESU concepts lie more in the criteria used to define the ESUs themselves rather than in their fundamental essence. We provide a context-based framework for delineating ESUs which circumvents much of this situation. Rather than embroil in a befuddled debate over an optimal criterion, the key to a solution is accepting that differing criteria will work more dynamically than others and can be used alone or in combination depending on the situation. These assertions constitute the impetus behind adaptive evolutionary conservation. 相似文献
