Life tables were constructed to assess the relative importance of some factors causing mortality of Tribolium confusum and to gauge their response to increasing population density. Observations focussed on three population densities (100, 400 and 800 individual/8 g medium) from the egg to the adult stage. The medium was not renewed in order to maximize predatory interactions. Generation mortality at densities 100, 400 and 800 was 42%, 50% and 74% respectively, i. e. density-dependent. Mortality in the first 10 days was also density-dependent reaching a maximum of 27% at density 800: predation by small larvae on eggs seemed the principal causative factor. The overall pattern of larval mortality was density-independent. Data on the mortality of pupae and callows were ultimately consistent with an inversely density-dependent pattern. Apparently, only mortality occurring within the first 10 days was capable of population regulation.  相似文献

We report the results of a study of the prevalence of nonsyndromic dental agenesis among a sample of 208 individuals (105 females, 103 males) between the ages of 15 and 29 years from a North American religious and genetic isolate, the Dariusleut Hutterites of Western Canada. Direct examination of dental casts, oral examination reports, dental treatment records, and a limited number of dental radiographs reveals congenital absence and/or obvious morphometric reduction of at least one tooth (excluding third molars) in 98 subjects (55 females, 43 males), yielding a prevalence estimate of approximately 47%. This estimate is nearly four times those reported for nonisolate Caucasoid populations of European descent and substantially higher than the elevated prevalences observed in several other isolated populations. Although the prevalence of dental agenesis in the Dariusleut is indeed high, neither the incidence of bilateral agenesis (exhibited at least once in 58% of affected dentitions), number of affected teeth per person (mean, 2.4), morphologic tooth classes affected, or combinations of tooth classes affected ostensibly distinguish them from other populations with similar geographic origins. We conclude that the dental agenesis observed in this North American genetic isolate does not represent a private polymorphism or rare developmental variant. Consequently, the results of further study in these Dariusleut Brethren will be directly relevant to critically testing as yet unresolved hypotheses for the mode of gene action and the relative contributions of hereditary and environmental factors to the reduction of tooth numbers in human dentitions.  相似文献

Summary Wheat plants were grown in deep pots at three levels of copper nutrition in an open-sided glasshouse where they were subject to natural infection by powdery mildew. Plant growth and the degree of infection of each leaf were assessed weekly throughout the life of the plants.During the middle phase of growth especially — from tillering to anthesis — severity of infection of leaves was decreased by increasing the level of copper supply. Stems of copper-deficient plants were also severely infected. In these plants serious disease was sustained until final harvest. The results are discussed in relation to known and speculative roles of copper in plants.  相似文献

Oxygen uptake of Channa marulius was studied under water with and without access to air. There was a significant increase in the oxygen uptake through the gills when access to air was prevented. However, this value (0.863 ± 0.058 mlO2/indiv./h) was quite low in comparison to the total bimodal oxygen uptake (2.04 ± 0.14 mlO2/indiv./h) in juveniles. In adult fish the oxygen uptake per unit time increased appreciably (4.673 ± 0.404 mlO2/indiv./h). In juveniles as well as in adults the air breathing dominated over aquatic breathing. This fish showed a definite circadian rhythm in the bimodal oxygen uptake during different hours of the day.This work was performed in the Ichthyology Laboratory, P. G.   1. A field study was carried out on the population dynamics of a thistle-feeding lady beetle, Henosepilachna pustulosa (Kôno ) living in a cool temperature climax forest in northern Kyoto Prefecture, central Japan.
  2. Intensive marking, release and recapture program was carried out to estimate the adult population parameters by usingJolly-Seber method.
  3. Sampling ratio was around 50%. Marking ratio rapidly rised as the census progressed and approached to 100%.
  4. Sex ratio (% ♀) was 63–69% in both overwintered and new adults.
  5. Daily survival rate was as high as 0.95 or more and constant throughout the season. Adult longevity in the spring was longer than 40 days.
  6. Reproductive rate i. e., the ratio of the number of newly emerged adults in a given generation to that of overwintered adults in the preceding generation, is very small, ranging 1–3, whereas winter survival is higher than 50%, consequently the size of populations in the study area remain in a remarkably constant size and it never reached a level where intraspesific competition occurred.
  7. The population characteristics of H. pustulosa are compared with those of the two closely related species, H. vigintioctopunctata and H. vigintioctomaculata, which are the pests of Solanaceous crops. Hp is more K-strategic than the two pest species.

Data are presented on the frequency of the following eight dental traits in 635 Yanomama and 65 Makiritare Indians: upper central incisor rotation or winging, shoveling of maxillary incisors, maxillary molar hypocone reduction, Carabelli's trait, mandibular molar cusp number, mandibular molar cusp pattern rotation of second lower premolar, and pattern of second lower premolar cusps. Yanomama dentition is unusual in the high frequency of six cusps on the mandibular molars. There is marked dental microdifferentiation between villages; significant agreement was observed between a matrix of pairwise "dental distances" based on six morphological traits and corresponding matrices based on 11 genetic systems and on geographic location.  相似文献

The host‐microbe relationship is pivotal for oral health as well as for peri‐implant diseases. Peri‐implant mucosa and commensal biofilm play important roles in the maintenance of host‐microbe homeostasis, but little is known about how they interact. We have therefore investigated the early host‐microbe interaction between commensal multispecies biofilm (Streptococcus oralis, Actinomyces naeslundii, Veillonella dispar, Porphyromonas gingivalis) and organotypic peri‐implant mucosa using our three‐dimensional model. After 24 hr, biofilms induced weak inflammatory reaction in the peri‐implant mucosa by upregulation of five genes related to immune response and increased secretion of IL‐6 and CCL20. Biofilm volume was reduced which might be explained by secretion of β‐Defensins‐1, ‐2, and CCL20. The specific tissue reaction without intrinsic overreaction might contribute to intact mucosa. Thus, a relationship similar to homeostasis and oral health was established within the first 24 hr. In contrast, the mucosa was damaged and the bacterial distribution was altered after 48 hr. These were accompanied by an enhanced immune response with upregulation of additional inflammatory‐related genes and increased cytokine secretion. Thus, the homeostasis‐like relationship was disrupted. Such profound knowledge of the host‐microbe interaction at the peri‐implant site may provide the basis to improve strategies for prevention and therapy of peri‐implant diseases.  相似文献
