Involuntary temporary feed restriction on commercial cattle is likely to become more frequent with forage shortages in the context of climate change. If general consequences of feed restriction have been the subject of an abundant scientific literature, focus on the inter-individual variability of response is scarce. Here, we explore the response profile in terms of BW, body condition score, milk production, calf weight and cyclicity resumption of 293 lactations from 169 Charolais cows during a winter feed restriction in early lactation and its subsequent recovery at grazing using a principal component analysis followed by a hierarchical clustering on principal component. Results show a very continuous range of response profiles that was divided into three clusters: one with light animals having an intermediate response in terms of milk production and body maintenance, one with animals prioritising body maintenance and cyclicity resumption over milk production and calf weight, and the last one with animals prioritising milk production and calf weight over the rest. Among the animals performing more than one lactation, 57% remain in the same cluster on two successive lactations. This work highlights that an average group response to feed restriction may hide various resilience individual profiles. Further studies are required to determine the existence of a genetic component as well as the consequences of not taking this phenomenon into consideration with the regular use of feed restriction in commercial farms.  相似文献

Human physiology and behavior are characterized by a daily internal temporal dimension. This so-called circadian rhythmicity is present for almost all variables studied to date, persists in the absence of external cycles, and is synchronized to the external 24-h world by an internally generated circadian rhythm of light sensitivity. The light-sensitive circadian pacemaker, presumably also in humans located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus, drives the endogenous circadian component of rhythmicity for a number of variables including plasma melatonin, alertness, sleep propensity and sleep structure. Overt rhythmicity and the consolidation of vigilance states are generated by a fine-tuned interaction of this circadian process with other regulatory processes such as sleep homeostasis.  相似文献

Light-triggered membrane potential changes in cells of a liverwort Anthoceros are greatly enhanced by the ionophorous uncouplers nigericin and monesin. Stimulation of the light-triggered electrical response (LTER) by nigericin occurred concomitantly with inhibition of a slow decline in the chlorophyll fluorescence, which suggests that the transmembrane pH gradient in thylakoids is not essential for generation of LTER at the plasma membrane. The extent of monensin-stimulated LTER remained high under a diminished driving force for the ionophore-induced proton-cation exchange across the plasma membrane (elevation of the external Na+ concentration from 1 to 50 m M ), which indicates that energy uncoupling in chloroplasts is more related to the electric response enhancement than the induction of the H+/K+(Na+) exchange at the plasma membrane. Enhancement of LTER by ionophores occurs in parallel with stimulation of light-triggered pH changes (alkalinization) in the vicinity of the cell surface, which suggests an association of trans-membrane H+ fluxes with LTER. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that illumination produces a temporary inhibition of the plasma membrane H+ pump with a subsequent activation of gated channels and transient rapid depolarization of the cell.  相似文献

Growth responses of some soil fungi to spatially heterogeneous nutrients   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract The natural nutritional environments of most fungi are spatially non-uniform, yet the majority of studies of fungal growth take no account of this fact. An experimental system is described which permits the growth responses of eucarpic fungi to heterogeneously distributed nutrient resources to be studied. The system comprises tesselations of agar tiles of contrasting nutrient status separated by air gaps. Growth responses in such systems of Alternaria alternata, Mucor sp., Phoma foveata , Rhizoctonia solani and Trichoderma viride are described. Generally, the growth of the fungi reflected the nutrient status of the underlying substrate. There was evidence for growth in low-nutrient tiles being greater when high-nutrient tiles were included in the tessellation. Reproductive structures tended to be formed only in low nutrient tiles with Trichoderma and Rhizoctonia and only high nutrient tiles with Alternaria . Growth responses of Rhizoctonia were strongly asymmetric in nutritionally symmetric, but heterogeneous, tesselations. The consequences of the observations for fungal growth in heterogeneous environments such as soil is discussed.  相似文献

Stimulation of the spinal cord of the electric fish Gymnotus carapo, evoked an abrupt increase in the discharge rate of the electric organ. At the maximum of this response, the rate increased an average of 26 ± 11.8%. The duration of the response was 4.9 ± 2.12 s; its latency was 10.4 ± 1.1 ms. Activation of the Mauthner axon played a decisive role in this phenomenon as indicated by the following: (1) recordings from the axon cap of the Mauthner cell demonstrated that the response was evoked if the Mauthner axon was antidromically activated and (2) a response that was similar to that produced by spinal cord stimulation, was elicited by intracellular stimulation of either Mauthner cell. Stimulation of the eighth nerve could also increase the discharge rate of the electric organ. The effect was greater if a Mauthner cell action potential was elicited. The findings described in the present report, indicate the existence of a functional connection between the Mauthner cell and the electromotor system in Gymnotus carapo. This connection may function to enhance the electrolocative sampling of the environment during Mauthner-cell mediated behaviors. A model of the humoral immune response, proposed by Dibrov, Livshits and Volkenstein (1977b), in which the antibody production by a constant target cell population depends on the antigenic stimulation at earlier times, is considered from an analytic standpoint. A method of approximation based on a consideration of the asymptotic limit of large delay in the antibody response is shown to be applicable, and to give results similar to those obtained numerically by the above authors. The relevance of this type of approximation to other systems exhibiting outbreak phenomena is discussed.  相似文献

Juvenile Nucella lapillus of two different shell phenotypes, exposed shore and protected shore, were maintained in running seawater under each of three experimental conditions for 94 d: a) laboratory control, b) exposed to the effluent of crabs (Cancer pagurus) fed frozen fish (fish-crab), and c) exposed to the effluent of crabs fed live conspecific snails (snail-crab). Rates of barnacle consumption and rates of body weight change varied significantly between phenotypes and among experimental conditions. Individuals from the protected-shore consumed consistently fewer barnacles and grew consistently less than those from the exposed shore. Body weight increases in the fish-crab treatments were from 25 to 50% less than those in the controls and body weights in the snail-crab treatment either did not change or actually decreased. The perceived risk of predation thus appears to have a dramatic effect on the rates of feeding and growth of N. lapillus.At the end of the experiment, size-adjusted final shell weights for both phenotypes were consistently higher than controls (no crab) in both the fish-crab and snail-crab treatments. In addition, apertural tooth height, thickness of the lip, and retractability (i.e. the extent to which a snail could withdraw into its shell), with few exceptions all varied in an adaptive manner in response to the various risk treatments. Similar changes in the shell form of starved snails exposed to the same stimuli suggest very strongly that the morphological responses of both phenotypes were not just due to differences in rates of growth. These differences, at least in part, represented a direct cueing of the shell form of Nucella lapillus to differences in the perceived risk of predation. Somewhat surprisingly, the extent of phenotypic plasticity appeared to differ between the populations examined. Both field and laboratory evidence suggest that the exposed-shore population was much more labile morphologically than the protected-shore population.In many instances, particularly among starved snails, the development of antipredatory shell traits was greater in the fish-crab treatment than in the snail-crab treatment. Because the scent of crabs was present in both treatments, these results suggest a) that, at the frequency/concentration used in the experiments, the scent of damaged conspecifics may have been a supernormal stimulus and b) that the morphological response in these treatments might have been greater if the stimulus had been provided at a lower level.  相似文献

The optimum temperatures for population development were determined for six species of bacterial-feeding nematodes from among eight temperatures, ranging from 5 to 40 C. Four of the species are cohabiting species. The range of temperatures over which population development occurs (temperature niche breadth) is different for the cohabiting species. This difference may be a means of reducing competition between species, thus increasing temperatures over which habitats can be exploited.  相似文献

During pathogenesis, effector proteins are secreted from the pathogen to the host plant to provide virulence activity for invasion of the host. However, once the host plant recognizes one of the delivered effectors, effector‐triggered immunity activates a robust immune and hypersensitive response (HR). In planta, the effector AvrRps4 is processed into the N‐terminus (AvrRps4N) and the C‐terminus (AvrRps4C). AvrRps4C is sufficient to trigger HR in turnip and activate AtRRS1/AtRPS4‐mediated immunity in Arabidopsis; on the other hand, AvrRps4N induces HR in lettuce. Furthermore, AvrRps4N‐mediated HR requires a conserved arginine at position 112 (R112), which is also important for full‐length AvrRps4 (AvrRps4F) processing. Here, we show that effector processing and effector recognition in lettuce are uncoupled for the AvrRps4 family. In addition, we compared effector recognition by lettuce of AvrRps4 and its homologues, HopK1 and XopO. Interestingly, unlike for AvrRps4 and HopK1, mutation of the conserved R111 in XopO by itself was insufficient to abolish recognition. The combination of amino acid substitutions arginine 111 to leucine with glutamate 114 to lysine abolished the XopO‐mediated HR, suggesting that AvrRps4 family members have distinct structural requirements for perception by lettuce. Together, our results provide an insight into the processing and recognition of AvrRps4 and its homologues.  相似文献
