Six condition indices based on RNA, total soluble protein and two metabolic enzymes [lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and citrate synthase (CS)] were analysed in muscle tissue of individual larvae, post-flexion reared sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax using DNA and total soluble protein as standards for size. In addition, the effect of 2 days of food deprivation on the cell proliferation rates was assessed. The RNA:DNA best reflected short-term changes in feeding conditions. If standardized by DNA content, LDH activity was a better indicator of condition than any other index but RNA:DNA. Further, the analysis of cell proliferation rates in muscle from 26 day-old larvae proved useful in distinguishing continuously fed larvae from individuals subjected to 2 days of fast. 相似文献

Aims Rhododendron ponticum L. is reputed to be a post Plio‐Pleistocene relict plant species with a disjunct distribution that comprises the Iberian Peninsula to the west and the Euxinian region plus some restricted Mediterranean areas to the east. We analysed the ecological range (of subsp. baeticum) in the western area (Aljibe Mountains, north of the Strait of Gibraltar) to understand the factors determining the present area limitation. Location Sierra del Aljibe, north of the Strait of Gibraltar (Iberian Peninsula). Methods We selected 20 riparian sites where R. ponticum is common, and compiled data on the ecological diversity of associated woody species and ferns. We established a 500‐m main transect in each site, along the stream or river course, in which we placed five 20‐m‐long plots at regular intervals. We recorded physiographic habitat features, woody plants and fern abundance, and the number of R. ponticum individuals. Results Rhododendron ponticum in southern Spain is restricted to riparian forests in acidic soils (pH 4.0–6.4), and is mainly found on the banks of inclined and enclosed streams. In our inventory we recorded 59 woody taxa and 12 ferns, with R. ponticum being the dominant species of the understorey (mean abundance 78.6%). The communities are characterized by a high incidence of the humid warm temperate element, both in number of species (18.8 ± 3.7 per site) and abundance; meanwhile, the presence of the modern Mediterranean element (mean number of species 3.4 ± 3.8 per site) appears to be favoured by disturbance. These ecological–historical groups of taxa also show distinct patterns of typological habit, frequency of endemism, infrageneric diversity and geographical range. Populations of R. ponticum are characterized by a very variable density of seedlings in many sites, and the virtual lack of juveniles. Main conclusions Riparian forests of the Aljibe Mountains constitute a refuge for R. ponticum where the species persists, but populations appear to be in decline. The narrow ecological range of R. ponticum in the area strongly contrasts with its wide amplitude in the eastern natural area, mainly the Euxinian region, where R. ponticum probably finds better conditions due to the environmental heterogeneity of the region, and the lack of a hot dry season. 相似文献

Abstract The effect of the Na+/Ca2+ ratio in the root media on salt-stressed corn (Zea mays L. cvs DeKalb XL-75 and Pioneer 3906) was determined in greenhouse experiments. Plants grown in a complete nutrient solution salinized with 86.5 mol m?3 NaCl exhibited severe Ca2+ deficiency symptoms at the four-leaf stage. The symptoms disappeared when part of the NaCl was replaced with 10 mol m?3 CaCl2 (Na+/Ca2+ molar ratio = 5.7). Salt stress at an iso-osmotic potential of ?0.4 MPa substantially decreased shoot growth at all solution Na+/Ca2+ ratios from 34.6 to 0.26. However, the dry weights of blades at 26 d of age were much less when plants were salinized with NaCl alone, particularly that of DeKalb XL-75 which was more susceptible to Na-induced Ca2+ deficiency than was Pioneer 3906. The growth of sheaths was similarity reduced by sail stress at all Na+/Ca2+ ratios. The symptoms of Ca2+ deficiency were correlated with low Ca2+ concentrations in the leaf tissue. Ca2+ concentrations in the developing blades of NaCl-stressed plants were much lower than in control plants. As the Na+/Ca2+ ratio in the solution was decreased, Ca2+ levels increased in both the blades and sheaths while Na+ concentrations greatly decreased. DeKalb XL-75 was much less effective than Pioneer 3906 in restricting the uptake of Na+. The results clearly indicate that NaCl stress may cause lesions and unique plant responses that are not manifested on agronomic plants grown on saline soils. 相似文献

The binding and internalization of 125I-nerve growth factor (NGF) by PC12 pheochromocytoma cells was studied as a function of extracellular potassium concentration. Both surface-bound and internalized fractions of 125I-NGF associated with the cells under depolarizing conditions (50 mM K+) increased to 144 +/- 28% (average +/- SEM, six different cell preparations) and to 176 +/- 12% (n = 6), respectively, of those observed at 6.0 mM K+. Scatchard-type analysis of the data indicates increased sites for the binding and internalization of iodinated NGF by the cells. Similar enhancement was observed for cells treated with NGF as well. This voltage-dependent phenomenon was reversible, and also observed in the presence of veratridine. Moreover, withdrawal of extracellular Ca2+ abolished high K+-induced modulation of 125I-NGF binding and internalization, indicating that this effect may be mediated by Ca2+. 相似文献

In the developing peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) kernels, the period between 15 and 35 days after podding (DAP) was identified as the active period of oil-filling. The
period of active oil-filling was associated with a decrease in the starch, soluble sugars and proteins so as to make available
the energy and carbon skeleton for the synthesis of oil. The oil content in the mature kernels decreased by 11, 12 and 25
per cent with Zn, S and Zn+S deficiency, respectively. In addition, proteins and starch content decreased significantly while
that of soluble sugars increased slightly. The activity of malate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase also
decreased due to Zn as well as S deficiency. The deficiency treatments resulted in a decrease in phospholipids, free fatty
acids and triacylglycerols in mature kernels. Further the proportion of 16∶0 and 18∶2 decreased while that of 18∶1 increased

Summary Natural rapeseed (Brassica napus L.; AACC 2n=38), originated in the temperate climate of the Southwest European Mediterranean region, fails to complete its generative phase in the subtropics and is thus not cultivated in countries like Bangladesh. Adapted agroecotypes are available from the diploid representatives of its genome A (B. campestris/pekinensis, 2n=20) and C (B. oleracea/alboglabra, 2n=18). An artificial resynthesis based on carefully selected progenitor lines was expected to give a photoperiodically better adapted rapeseed. B. pekinensis x B. oleracea/alboglabra gave 2 hybrids and 87 matromorphous plants from 1,448 crossed flowers and the reciprocal combination gave no hybrid but 11 matromorphous plants from 2,228 pollinated flowers. The two true hybrids were vegetatively propagated and chromosome doubled. Part of the F2 was grown in Sweden (all plants flowered and the most early ones were selected), part in Bangladesh (13 out of 706 plants flowered). The selected F3 material flowered in Bangladesh and transgressions in earliness could be recorded, some lines were of definite agronomic potential. A correlation in earliness between reaction in Sweden (long day) and Bangladesh (short day) was observed. 相似文献

Summary Plants were regenerated from callus cultures of maize inbred W182BN with the S(USDA) type of cytoplasmic male sterility (cms). Some regenerates from 16 of 18 separate cultures had fertile tassels. Many other regenerates, whose fertility could not be scored accurately because of abnormal plant morphology, produced fertile progeny after pollination with N cytoplasm W182BN. Revertant plants and/or progeny were obtained from all 18 cultures, which included the CA, D, LBN, and S sources of cmsS. More revertants were recovered from cultures maintained as callus for 12 months than from 3–4 month old cultures. Several types of evidence (absence of segregation for fertility after selfing or pollination of revertants with standard W182BN, pollen viability counts, failure of revertants to restore sterile cmsS lines to fertility, mitochondrial DNA analyses) indicated that the reversion to fertility involved cytoplasmic rather than nuclear alterations. All revertants examined lacked the S1 and S2 plasmid-like DNAs characteristic of the mitochondrial genome of sterile cmsS lines. Most callus cultures lost S1 and S2 after 13–20 months in vitro. No revertants were seen among thousands of W182BN cmsS plants grown from seed in the field or among plants from tissue cultures of W182BN with the C or T types of cms. The cytoplasmic revertants recovered from culture may be useful for the molecular analysis of cmsS. 相似文献
