Green plant cells can generate ATP in both chloroplasts and mitochondria. Hence the effect of photosynthesis on dark mitochondrial respiration can be considered at a variety of levels. Turnover of ceitric acid cycle dehydrogenases, which is essential for supply of carbon skeletons for amino acid synthesis, seems to be largely unaffected during photosynthesis. The source of carbon for the anaplerotic function of the citric acid cycle in light is however, not known with certainty. NADH generated in these reactions is probably not oxidised via the mitochondrial electron transfer chain coupled to ATP synthesis. However, it may be oxidised by the alternative cyanide-insensitive pathway, exported to the cytosol via the oxaloacetate-malate dicarboxylate shuttle or directly utilised for cytosolic nitrate reduction. Oxidation of succinate via cytochrome oxidase may also be similarly inhibited in light. Whether increase in the cytosolic ATP/ADP ratio in light is responsible for the inhibition of mitochondrial electron transfer to O2 is not clearly established, because the ATP/ADP ratio is reported to be already quite high in the dark. Effective collaboration between photophosphorylation and oxidative phosphorylation in order to maintain the cytosolic energy charge at a present high level is discussed. 相似文献

Triiodothyronine (T3) effects on the activity, rate of synthesis and mRNA content of the key lipogenic enzyme, fatty acid synthetase, were studied in differentiating ob17 preadipocytes cloned from ob/ob mouse epididymal adipose tissue. During differentiation in the presence of insulin, a 6–10-fold increase in both fatty acid synthetase specific activity and synthesis rate were reproducibly observed and occurred concomitantly. The relative synthesis rate exhibited a progressive elevation from 0.5% at confluence to a maximum level of 2% in the presence of insulin. The rate of the enzyme degradation determined by pulse-chase experiments was similar in differentiating cells and insulin-untreated cells of the same age (, 40–42 h). Furthermore, the increase in the enzyme synthesis rate was preceded by a progressively elevating amount of mRNA encoding for this protein as detected by translation in a reticulocyte lysate cell-free system. It is thus suggested that the increment in total and neosynthesized fatty acid synthetase in essentially due to an increased enzyme synthesis, reflecting an increased relative content of its specific mRNA. T3 included at a physiological concentration (1.5 nM) in the culture medium enhanced significantly both enzyme synthesis and its specific mRNA. The most important T3 effect was an acceleration of both processes, a stimulation of the mRNA level being detected as early as day 3 post-confluence and maximum at day 5 when the effect on the synthetase synthesis rate and activity began to be enhanced. Synopsis Aspects of the biology of the euryhaline Asian cichlid Etroplus suratensis in a coastal lagoon of Sri Lanka were studied for a period of 15 months. Comparisons are made from the catches from the fishery of manmade, inland freshwater reservoirs. Changes in the stock structure in the sublittoral region of the lagoon indicate that recruitment takes place twice a year, during the high rainfall/low salinity periods. The feeding habits of E. suratensis were different in the two habitats. In the lagoon it fed mainly on molluscs and in the freshwater reservoirs on macrophytes. Feeding chronology based on diurnal surveys indicate that it feeds mainly during the daylight hours. The dentition of E. suratensis is adapted for both tearing and crushing (pharyngeal teeth). Distinct differences in the mean relative intestinal length between populations from the coastal lagoon and inland reservoirs were evident and these differences are correlated to their respective feeding habits. Diurnal changes in feeding activity are associated with changes in the stomach pH. The egg-diameter distribution of mature fish indicate that E. suratensis is a single spawner, that it sheds its mature eggs all at once. It is inferred that E. suratensis breeds twice a year but that an individual female is capable of spawning only once a year. 相似文献

Animals injected with motilin or human gastrin I (1–17) exhibited decreased food intake relative to those injected with VIP or diluent, which did not differ from each other, although food intake increased reliably over days. The mean water consumption followed the same pattern as that of food intake. As expected from the above results, VIP produced weight gains as compared with rats injected with motilin or gastrin but not reliably more than after diluent. A reliable effect of trials for weight gain was the greatest on day three. Running wheel activity was not affected by injections of human gastrin I (1–17), motilin, or diluent but was reliably decreased by VIP. No significant differences existed across days. The flavonoid aglycone analysis of 20 Thymus taxa (most Iberic or Balearic endemics) shows the presence of luteolin, apigenin, acacetin, genkwanin, 6-hydroxyluteolin, xanthomicrol, cirsimaritin; four partially identified flavones, of which three are 6-OR-substituted and one flavonol. The differences observed between T. capitatus (L.) Hoffmanns. et Link (subgenus Coridothymus (Reichenb. fil.) Borbás) and the other species belonging to the subgenus Thymus (L.) Synopsis Variation in the diurnal composition of a fish assemblage of a Bahamian coral reef was investigated by comparing visual counts of fishes taken along a 100 × 4 m wide fixed transect at four times: 0900, 1200, 1500 and 1800 hours during the summer of 1979. One sample per day was obtained at each time period over a span of 20 consecutive days. Forty-two species were recorded in these samples, with 25 occurring frequently enough to permit statistical analysis of diurnal variations in abundance. Of the 25 species compared, nearly one fourth (6 species) displayed significant variation in abundance patterns among the four time periods tested. It is suggested, because of the strong possibility of bias which might otherwise be introduced because of these variations, that repetitive quantitative visual censusing of coral reef fishes be undertaken at about the same time each day. 相似文献

Vast amounts of research have been done that have attempted to delineate the pharmacological and physiological effects of the endogenous opiate peptides. A great deal of knowledge has also been accumulated in a limited time span concerning the types and locations of the opiate receptors and peptides, as well as their functions. In 1980, reports were made concerning the effects of these peptides on analgesia, on tolerance and dependence, on activity, on learning and memory, on schizophrenia and other types of emotional disturbances, and on physiological responses such as eating and drinking, cardiovascular responses, and sexual function. Additional understanding was also gained concerning their interactions with neurotransmitters, other neuropeptides, and hormones. High plasma levels of linoleic acid (18:2) may injure endothelial cells, resulting in decreased barrier function of the vascular endothelium. The effects of linoleic acid on endothelial barrier function (transendothelial movement of albumin), membrane-bound enzyme activities, and possible autooxidation of linoleic acid under experimental conditions were studied. The exposure of endothelial monolayers to 18:2 for 24 hr at 60, 90, and 120 μM. fatty acid concentrations caused a significant increase in transendothelial movement of albumin, with maximum albumin transfer at 90 μM. Fatty acid treatment resulted in the increased appearance of cytosolic lipid droplets. Activities of the membrane-bound enzymes, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), and Ca2+-ATPase increased steadily with increasing time of cell exposure to 90 μM 18:2, reaching significance at 24 hr. Treatment of endothelial cultures with up to 120 μM 18:2 did not cause cytotoxicity, as evidenced by a nonsignificant change in cellular release of [3H]-adenine. Incubation of 18:2-supplemented serum-containing culture media with 1000 μM 18:2 at 37°C for up to 48 hr did not result in formation of autooxidation products. These results suggest that 18:2 itself, and not its oxidation products, plays a major role in disrupting endothelial barrier function. 相似文献
