Synopsis The extent to which data concerning the population genetics of a parasite — namely larvalAnisakis simplex, may be used as an auxilliary source of information on various aspects of the marine migrations of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is examined.Frequencies of the various acid phosphatase alleles could not be used in distinguishing between or estimating the proportions of North American and European salmon occurring off west Greenland. The genetic structure of larvae from salmon taken in Scotland was different from that taken in Ireland and England confirming an earlier conclusion that the feeding habits of the fish from Scotland were significantly different. In the western Atlantic, salmon from northern Newfoundland and also salmon from the Bay of Fundy had apparently ingested different populations (or different proportions of the same nematode population) than salmon from Miramachi and Chaleur Bay areas. Samples from northern Newfoundland and Labrador were also genetically different. These findings are discussed in relation to the available literature concerning salmon migrations, explanations are put forward and areas of future research suggested. 相似文献

Synopsis A synthesis of ethnobiological, behavioral and physical oceanographic information leads to the conclusion that temperate zone models of reproductive strategy are inapplicable to many fishes of the coastal tropics. Intense predation appears to exert heavy selection pressure on fishes that spend their adult lives in coral, mangrove or tropical seagrass communities. Many exhibit spawning behaviors and spawn at times and locations that favor the transport of their pelagic eggs and pelagic larvae offshore where predation is reduced. This creates a countervailing selection pressure — the need to return the larvae to shallow water once they are ready to colonize their post-larval habitats. Accordingly, spawning is often concentrated at times of the year when prevailing winds or currents are at their weakest, thereby reducing the transport of larvae long distances from where they originated. Spawning is also concentrated in the vicinity of nearshore gyres which similarly favor the ultimate return of the larvae to their natal area. Among these species, therefore, offshore larval dispersal does not seem to be an adaptation for dispersal of the species, but rather an evolutionary response to intense predation pressure in the adult habitats. Lunar reproductive periodicity is more common among these species than has previously been recognized, and is one of the strategies employed to enhance the offshore flushing of eggs and larvae.This paper forms part of the proceedings of a mini-symposium convened at Cornell University, Ithaca, N. International Journal for Parasitology12: 473–480. Larvae of G. intestinalis pursued a specific migratory pathway within the equine oral cavity en route to the stomach. The larval migration included the following sequence: burrowing in the tongue mucosa, invasion of the interdental spaces, transitory attachment at the root of the tongue and movement to the stomach. The molt from first to second instar did not occur in the tongue, as commonly believed, but between the interdental spaces. Ninety five percent of the larvae invading the interdental spaces were associated with gingiva of the upper molars. SEM analysis revealed further details of the oral migration: (1) air holes excavated in the epithelium which connect with deeper burrows; (2) an intimate association between air holes and posterior spiracles of larvae; (3) precise impressions of larvae in tissue immediately surrounding the most recently formed burrows; and (4) initial larval entry into the tongue through the use of natural disruptions or healing lesions. Experiments were designed to demonstrate that growth is precisely regulated in crustacean larvae and that cyclic temperatures act as a perturbation on growth regulation. Summary Epithelium of amphibian embryos (Cynops orientalis, Xenopus laevis) was found in preceding experiments to generate and conduct impulses during a limited stage (26–37) of development. In order to elucidate the structural basis of impulse propagation, epithelial cells of four stages were examined by the freeze-etching method: (I) before and (II) during acquisition of conductivity; (III) when propagation was fully established, and (IV) when it was no longer present. Only few gap junctions (GJ) of small size were found in groups I and IV. GJ in epithelia of group III were increased in number and size, and appeared morphologically coupled, i.e., with more loosely arranged connexons. The size of gap-junctional particles did not differ significantly between coupled and uncoupled stages. Zonulae occludentes seemed leaky in stage I, and tight in stages II–IV. Thus, the morphological characteristics of specialized junctions between non excitable cells correlated with the opening and closing of low resistance intercellular current pathways during embryonic development.Gap junctions in particular seem to form an essential link in the non-neural stimulus-response system, which may facilitate the mobility of the embryo during early phases of aquatic life before the reflex pathways have been established. Coupling and uncoupling of gap junctions may also play an important role in the regulation of cell differentiation and morphogenetic movement. The experimental model used in this study provides a useful tool for further investigations of structural correlates of gap junctional permeability under physiological conditions. 相似文献

Arrenurus larvae, ectoparasitic on zygopteran imagoes, attach to the host's cuticle and tear it to obtain the host's tissue fluids. Within the host's epidermis, each larval mite produces a feeding device, the stylostome, a narrow gelatinous resilient blind sac. Heavy mite infestation brings about several wounds in close proximity, accompanied by loss of more or less extensive areas of the epidermis. Despite wound repair by congregating hemocytes, local lack of epidermis seems to enfeeble the host, presumably owing to desiccation. Heavily mite-loaded zygopterans have lost the typical agility and are easily caught. A mite-induced mortality seems to exist in zygopteran populations; the infestation contributes to reduced longevity. The study of formation and decline of the arrenurid stylostome in zygopterans renders it possible to trace cellular defence reactions under natural conditions. Most stylostomes seem to thwart the ability of the host to recognize them as foreign bodies. The host's defence appears as a two-step reaction: (1) initial hemolymph clotting and deposition of melanin associated with aggregating hemocytes at the penetration site, (2) occasional subsequent melanization and cellular encapsulation of the stylostome. 相似文献

Random bred Merino ram and ewe lambs were vaccinated at 1, 2 and/or 3 months of age with irradiated T. colubriformis larvae. An exponentially increasing challenge of normal larvae was given to all groups including unvaccinated controls commencing at 1 month of age. The results, based on faecal egg counts, showed a dissociation into animals which responded to vaccination (geometric mean egg count 441) and those which did not (geometric mean egg count 1567). The proportion of responders was greatest in groups first vaccinated at the earliest age (1 month). Wool growth and liveweight gains showed severe depression corresponding to peak egg counts, however, responders were less affected than non-responders. There was no correlation between haemoglobin type and resistance to challenge. Faecal egg counts after impulse challenge with 10,000 normal larvae given at about 6 months of age showed a significant ranked correlation with those obtained during the primary exponential challenge. These results confirm that a proportion of young lambs respond to vaccination with irradiated larvae, and that genetically-determined factors are implicated in the ability of animals to respond to vaccination at an early age. 相似文献
