Aim, Scope and Background Metal die casting is a highly energy-intensive industry. In addition to that, the production of primary zinc by smelting consumes huge amounts of energy as well as generates many types of pollution. This paper uses LCA to investigate the environmental performance of a zinc cast product. The areas of environmental concern are focused on the direct and indirect air emissions that arise from the Zinc Smelting, Casting and Recycling, as well as transportation. Main Features The LCA case study employs a cradle-to-gate approach, which starts with the purchasing of primary zinc from abroad, casting, inspection, and ends when the scrap metal is sent back for recycling by truck. Based on a “generic” zinc casting product, the objective of the LCA was to compare the air emissions from the material cycle due to: i) the increased content of recycled metal in the final cast product; and ii) the choice of selecting between two Remelters (A and B), the first located near the company and the other in a neighbouring country, to send zinc scrap for recycling. The LCA SimaPro software (version 5.0) Eco-indicator “99 method is used to perform an impact assessment for Climate Change, Acidification, Ecotoxicity, Respiratory Inorganics, and Respiratory Organics was performed. Results The results from direct (process) and indirect (power plants) air emissions confirmed that the major air pollution occurs during Zinc Smelting, that is up to approximately 65–70%. Although an increase in recycling rates resulted in higher levels of air pollution from transportation as well as heavy metals from dross, these two issues were insignificant compared to the huge amount of energy consumed for primary metal production. Based on air pollution from transportation alone, a significant reduction of greenhouse gases and VOCs of 90% each was appreciated when Remelter A was selected. Conclusion The results verified that efforts to recycle zinc and consume the material in a more sustainable manner have become highly important. Also, a second LCA investigation that was made to compare zinc cast products that consists of: 100% primary zinc, mixtures of 50–50% and 40–60% primary-to-recycled zinc, and finally 100% recycled zinc; further emphasized the need for using recycled metal, as opposed to using primary metal.  相似文献

Adaptation to cold and warm conditions requires dramatic change in gene expression. The acclimatization process of the common carp Cyprinus carpio L. in its natural habitat has been used to study how organisms respond to natural environmental changes. At the cellular level, adaptation to cold condition is accompanied by a dramatic alteration in nucleolar structure and a down regulation of the expression of ribosomal genes. We show that the enrichment of condensed chromatin in winter adapted cells is not correlated with an increase of the heterochromatin marker trimethyl and monomethyl K20H4. However, the expression of the tri methyl K4 H3 and of the variant histone macroH2A is significantly increased during the winter season together with a hypermethylation of CpG residues. Taking into account the properties of macroH2A toward chromatin structure and dynamics and its role in gene repression our data suggest that the increased expression of macroH2A and the hypermethylation of DNA which occurs upon winter-acclimatization plays a major role for the reorganization of chromatin structure and the regulation of gene expression during the physiological adaptation to a colder environment.  相似文献

采用描述性流行病学方法对江苏省2008年疑似预防接种异常反应(Adverse event following immunization,AEFI)监测数据及网络直报系统运转情况进行分析和评价。共收集到AEFI报告个案6197例,其中疫苗引起的反应占98.97%,偶合症占0.95%,不明原因占0.02%,待定占0.06%。临床诊断分布是以发热、局部红肿和局部硬结等一般反应为多见,其次为异常反应中的过敏性皮疹,无菌性脓肿。全省AEFI网络直报系统运行正常,各项考核指标均完成得较好。采用统一的AEFI分类与临床诊断病例定义,通过网络直报系统的三级审核,报告的数据质量有了很大的提高。监测结果显示,全省免疫规划疫苗安全性与预防接种服务质量良好。  相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background This study provides a life cycle inventory of air emissions (CO2, NOx, PM10, and CO) associated with the transportation of goods by road, rail, and air in the U.S. It includes the manufacturing, use, maintenance, and end-of-life of vehicles, the construction, operation, maintenance, and end-of-life of transportation infrastructure, as well as oil exploration, fuel refining, and fuel distribution. Methods The comparison is performed using hybrid life cycle assessment (LCA), a combination of process-based LCA and economic input-output analysis-based LCA (EIO-LCA). All these components are added by means of a common functional unit of grams of air pollutant per ton-mile of freight activity. Results and Discussion Results show that the vehicle use phase is responsible for approximately 70% of total emissions of CO2 for all three modes. This confirms that tailpipe emissions underestimate total emissions of freight transportation as infrastructure, pre-combustion, as well as vehicle manufacturing and end-of-life account for a sizeable share of total emissions. Differences between tailpipe emissions and total system wide emissions can range from only 4% for road transportation's CO emissions to an almost ten-fold difference for air transportation's PM10 emissions. Conclusion Rail freight has the lowest associated air emissions, followed by road and air transportation. Depending on the pollutant, rail is 50-94% less polluting than road. Air transportation is rated the least efficient in terms of air emissions, partly due to the fact that it carries low weight cargo. It emits 35 times more CO2 than rail and 18 times more than road transportation on a ton-mile basis. It is important to consider infrastructure, vehicle manufacturing, and pre-combustion processes, whose life-cycle share is likely to increase as new tailpipe emission standards are enforced. Recommendation and Outlook Emission factors, fuel efficiency, and equipment utilization contribute the most to uncertainty in the results. Further studies are necessary to address all variables that influence these parameters, such as road grade, vehicle speed, and vehicle weight. A focus on regional variation, end-of-life processes, fuel refining processes, terminals, as well as more accurate infrastructure allocation between freight and passenger transportation would strengthen the model.  相似文献

Guadua angustifolia Kunth was successfully propagated in vitro from axillary buds. Culture initiation, bud sprouting, shoot and plant multiplication, rooting and acclimatization, were evaluated. Best results were obtained using explants from greenhouse-cultivated plants, following a disinfection procedure that comprised the sequential use of an alkaline detergent, a mixture of the fungicide Benomyl and the bactericide Agri-mycin, followed by immersion in sodium hypochlorite (1.5% w/v) for 10 min, and culturing on Murashige and Skoog medium containing 2 ml l?1 of Plant Preservative Mixture®. Highest bud sprouting in original explants was observed when 3 mg l?1 N6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) was incorporated into the culture medium. Production of lateral shoots in in vitro growing plants increased with BAP concentration in culture medium, up to 5 mg l?1, the highest concentration assessed. After six subcultures, clumps of 8–12 axes were obtained, and their division in groups of 3–5 axes allowed multiplication of the plants. Rooting occurred in vitro spontaneously in 100% of the explants that produced lateral shoots. Successful acclimatization of well-rooted clumps of 5–6 axes was achieved in the greenhouse under mist watering in a mixture of soil, sand and rice hulls (1:1:1).  相似文献

Several mass strandings of beaked whales have recently been correlated with military exercises involving mid-frequency sonar highlighting unknowns regarding hearing sensitivity in these species. We report the hearing abilities of a stranded juvenile beaked whale (Mesoplodon europaeus) measured with auditory evoked potentials. The beaked whale’s modulation rate transfer function (MRTF) measured with a 40-kHz carrier showed responses up to an 1,800 Hz amplitude modulation (AM) rate. The MRTF was strongest at the 1,000 and 1,200 Hz AM rates. The envelope following response (EFR) input–output functions were non-linear. The beaked whale was most sensitive to high frequency signals between 40 and 80 kHz, but produced smaller evoked potentials to 5 kHz, the lowest frequency tested. The beaked whale hearing range and sensitivity are similar to other odontocetes that have been measured.  相似文献

从逆境信号感知、ABA合成的触发到ABA水平的动态调控,是细胞内重要的逆境信号传导途径,相对于应答ABA的下游信号事件,该领域研究滞后。研究显示,根系中ZEP、限速酶NCED、AtRGS1等合成酶基因及ABA2基因响应胁迫反应上调ABA信号水平。而7′-,8′-,9′-hydroxylase和糖基转移酶基因受逆境诱导激活,负调节ABA的积累。同时,提高的内源ABA信号水平能激活合成酶基因和代谢酶基因的表达。此外,基因表达和源库动力学分析显示,叶片ABA动态库的维持依赖根源ABA的持续供应。值得一提的是,miRNA与ABA信号起源及动态水平维持有关。进一步的代谢动力学分析揭示,ABA信号水平受合成酶基因和代谢酶基因表达的协同控制,多因素共同参与内源ABA信号水平的动态调控。  相似文献

A 1431-bp upstream fragment of Athsp70b was cloned via PCR amplification and expressed in onion epidermis by particle bombardment. Furthermore, the progressive deletions of the Athsp70b upstream fragment linked to the β-glucuronidase (GUS) coding region were performed. Then, a stable GUS expression was analyzed in tobacco BY2 cells and Arabidopsis. Our present results showed that about a 500-bp region upstream ATG of Athsp70b is suitable to confer heat inducibility to the GUS reporter gene in plants and around 116 bp contain nonperfect heat-sensitive element. This promoter responds to heat, salicylic acid, and benzyladenine. GUS staining was mainly observed in the vascular tissues and root tips, implying that Athsp70b is related to water transportation.  相似文献

In vitro bud clusters of Calathea orbifolia (Linden) Kennedy were obtained and subcultured in semi-solid (agar) medium and temporary immersion system (TIS) for 12 weeks. Uniform young plants were selected and transferred to soilless mix in a growth chamber for ex vitro acclimatization during 35 days, followed by growing in a shaded greenhouse for 65 days. Comparison of in vitro leaf anatomy, ex vitro photosynthetic behaviors and growth was made between two cultural systems. Plants in TIS produced thicker leaf chlorenchyma and aquiferous parenchyma, lower stomatal frequency and more epicuticular wax than did those in semi-solid medium. Plants from semi-solid medium had consistently lower leaf Fv/Fm values than plants from TIS. Leaf Fv/Fm value in plants from TIS decreased to 0.65 at day 7 after transfer and increased soon up to 0.76 thereafter. In contrast, leaf Fv/Fm value in plants from semi-solid medium reduced to 0.27 at day 7 after transfer and increased slowly up to 0.68 at day 35. During ex vitro acclimatization, plants in TIS had substantial higher photosynthetic rates than plants in semi-solid medium. Plants from TIS had subsequent higher leaf area, fresh and dry weights than plants from semi-solid medium.  相似文献
