Background

In response to the increasing dependence issue and the spectacular development of automated applications, our research aims at answering the following question: Is building automation an acceptable solution to dependence? Under which conditions is building automation perceived as acceptable by organisations caring for dependent people? To answer those questions, we based on the CoCaPs project, which is a French national supported research project with the ambition to develop a low-cost sensors platform capable to provide enriched information about people's behaviour inside a building and aiming at better controlling energy and improving people's security and comfort. We had the opportunity to join the project team with the task to undertake a usage investigation.

Methods

In this context, we interviewed 26 professionals involved in organisations dedicated to dependent people (nursing homes for dependent elderly people, nursing homes for dependant disable people, home-care organisations). All interviews were recorded and the completely verbatim of the interviews data were transcribed and analysed manually.

Results

The data analysis revealed that surveyed people mainly react positively to the presentation of the sensors platform developed by the CoCaPs project team. However, surveyed people pointed out to a number data of criteria about acceptability related to automated systems dedicated to dependent persons.

Conclusion

Our results suggest that an automated system is acceptable by the target organisations under various practical, ethical, social and financial criteria. Our research thus also demonstrate the importance to adopt a social-technique approach that means to consider simultaneously social and technical dimensions in any system development  相似文献

Aboveground biomass of tropical rain forest stands in Indonesian Borneo   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Aboveground plant biomass was examined in a tall virgin tropical lowland evergreen rain forest dominated by Dipterocarpaceae in Sebulu, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, with special reference to the gap-, building- and mature phases of the forest growth cycle. From the records of dimensions of sample trees examined by the stratified clip technique and DBH inventory data of trees in a study plot, the biomass of larger trees (DBH 4.5 cm) was estimated by the allometric correlation method. The biomass of smaller plants (DBH < 4.5 cm) was estimated by harvesting the plants in small quadrat plots. Although large differences were found between aboveground-biomass-estimates in different patches of different growth stages, the aboveground biomass in a 1.0 ha plot was 509 t/ha, and the one-sided LAI was 7.3 ha/ha. These values seem to result from the tall forest architecture with huge emergent trees (over 70 m high) and a moderate packing of plant mass indicated by the basal area value of 38.8 m2/ha for trees with DBH 4.5 cm.This study was financed through a grant to H. How the R1 replication control system responds to copy number deviations   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The copy number of R1 and of a repA-lacZ gene fusion was increased above normal by coupling to a plasmid which is present at a fivefold higher copy number at 30 degrees C. This carrier plasmid is deficient in replication at 42 degrees C, and it was thus possible after a temperature shift to analyze the response to the increased plasmid concentration of the R1 replication control system. Both the frequency of replication per plasmid molecule and the rate of repA expression per gene copy were reduced under these conditions, and the data strongly suggest that there is an inverse proportionality between the specific rate of plasmid replication viz repA expression and the copy number/gene dosage of the plasmid.  相似文献

A series of tetrazole convulsants were examined for their potencies in displacing [35S]-t-butylbicyclophosphorothionate (TBPS) from the picrotoxin site on the benzodiazepine-GABA-chloride ionophore receptor complex. All of the tetrazole derivatives tested inhibited [35S]-TBPS binding from rat forebrain membranes, and except for one (undecamethylenetetrazole), had Hill coefficients near unity. Similar to other chemically unrelated convulsants the inhibition of [35S]-TBPS binding by the various tetrazole derivatives was unaffected by the addition of the bicucculine-like GABA antagonist, R 5135. To ascertain whether the inhibition of specific [35S]-TBPS binding by the tetrazole derivatives was related to their convulsant properties, we compared their in vitro potencies in displacing [35S]-TBPS binding with their minimum convulsant potencies in mice. A very good correlation was observed (r = 0.96, p less than 0.001) between their relative affinities for the [35S]-TBPS binding site and their convulsant potencies, indicating that pentamethylenetetrazol and related tetrazoles may produce their convulsant and anxiogenic actions via the GABA-benzodiazepine-chloride ionophore receptor complex.  相似文献

Two functional T hybridomas were prepared by fusing BW5147 with ovalbumin (OVA)-primed splenic T blast cells. One was OVA specific for helper function requiring concanavalin A supernatant (CAS) for activity while the other, termed autoreactive, was nonspecific for helper-augmenting activity. Both required H-2d presenter cells for interleukin 2 (IL-2) production. The autoreactive clone showed helper activity only in the presence of suboptimal numbers of antigen (Ag)-primed T cells. Both T hybridomas were Lyt 1+2+ and Thy 1+. Cells produced from such fusions should provide a useful instrument not only in dissecting the T-cell regulatory mechanism, but also in isolating and characterizing self-recognition structures.  相似文献

Mouse liver poly(A) RNA, when translated in vitro, produced two forms of UDP glucuronosyltransferase with molecular weights of approximately 50,000 and 54,000 (designated GTm1 and GTm2, respectively). These forms were identified by antibody prepared against GTm1. The mRNA coding for GTm1 was preferentially increased twofold after treatment of mice with 3-methylcholanthrene, while GTm2 mRNA was unaffected. Phenobarbital, however, increased the translatable levels of the mRNAs coding for both proteins approximately twofold. GTm1 was shown to be glycosylated during translation in the presence of dog pancreatic microsomes. This was reflected by a decrease in mobility of the protein in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels as compared to GTm1 translated in the absence of microsomes. Further evidence for glycosylation in vivo was demonstrated by an increase in the mobility of GTm1 immunoadsorbed from microsomes treated with endoglycosidase H. In contrast, GTm2 was unmodified. This apparent difference in the state of glycosylation may reflect a difference in the transmembrane distribution of these two enzyme forms, and hence play an important role in determining the type of aglycone glucuronidated and its route of removal from the cell.  相似文献

Britain is renowned for low indoor winter temperatures and a high rate of excess winter deaths and a causal association has been drawn between the two. A lack of priority given to energy efficiency here is often justified in terms of the mild climate. However, it can be shown that British climatic features may be related to poor health as long as poor standards of construction and insulation prevail. A membrane-bound glutathione peroxidase-like activity has been detected in liver and cardiac mitochondrial membrane. This enzyme activity differs from the cytosol and mitochondrial matrix selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase in that it is membrane bound, sensitive to sonication and triton-X-100, and is unaffected by prolonged feeding of a selenium-free diet. This mitochondrial membrane-bound enzyme activity differs from the glutathione-S-transferases which exhibit glutathione peroxidase activity in that it is capable of utilizing both cumene hydroperoxide and hydrogen peroxide as substrates. Digitonin fractionation studies indicate that this enzyme is not located in either inner or outer mitochondrial membrane but rather within inter-membrane space. This newly described membrane-bound enzyme activity may play an important role in the maintenance of cardiac mitochondrial integrity in that mitochondrial matrix does not contain glutathione peroxidase.  相似文献

The effects of estrogen on RNA sequence complexity and sequence frequency were studied in rooster liver. Both control and estrogen-treated liver contained total RNA sequence diversity of approximately 4.2 × 107 nucleotides. Two components were found in the reaction of chicken liver or brain RNA with unique DNA: RNA species present at high concentration and RNA species about 100-fold less abundant. Approximately 7 × 106 nucleotides of RNA sequence complexity were present at high concentration in estrogen-treated liver but not at high concentration in control liver.  相似文献

The oxidation of ethanol by the liver produces acetaldehyde, which is a highly reactive compound. Low concentrations of acetaldehyde inhibited mitochondrial respiration with glutamate, β-hydroxybutyrate, or α-ketoglutarate as substrates, but not with succinate or ascorbate. High concentrations led to respiratory inhibition with all substrates. Inhibition of succinate- and ascorbate-linked oxidation by acetaldehyde correlates with the inhibition of the activities of succinic dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase. A site more sensitive to acetaldehyde appears to be localized prior to the NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase segment of the respiratory chain. Acetaldehyde inhibits energy production by the mitochondria, as evidenced by its inhibition of respiratory control, oxidative phosphorylation, the rate of phosphorylation, and the ATP-32P exchange reaction. Energy utilization is also inhibited, in view of the decrease in both substrate- and ATP-supported Ca2+ uptake, and the reduction in Ca2+-stimulated oxygen uptake and ATPase activity. The malate-aspartate, α-glycerophosphate, and fatty acid shuttles for the transfer of reducing equivalents, and oxidation by mitochondria, were highly sensitive to acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde also inhibited the uptake of anions which participate in the shuttles. The inhibition of the shuttles is apparently caused by interference with NAD+-dependent state 3 respiration and anion entry and efflux. Ethanol (6–80 mm) had no significant effect on oxygen consumption, anion uptake, or mitochondrial energy production and utilization. The data suggest that acetaldehyde may be implicated in some of the toxic effects caused by chronic ethanol consumption.  相似文献
