Phenyllactic acid (PLA) is a novel antimicrobial compound derived from phenylalanine (Phe). Lactobacillus sp. SK007, having high PLA-producing ability, was isolated from Chinese traditional pickles. When 6.1 mM phenylpyruvic acid
(PPA) was used to replace Phe as substrate at the same concentration, PLA production increased 14-fold and the fermentation
time decreased from 72 h to 24 h with growing cells. With resting cells, however, 6.8 mM PLA could be obtained as optimal

The elevated concentration of atmospheric CO2 may result in a decline of leaf nutritional quality (especially N) and an increase in some kinds of defensive secondary components
(such as phenolics). The changes in the phytochemistry of trees, combined with the effect of elevated CO2
per se, have a potential negative influence on insect herbivores. Here, we review the effect of elevated CO2 on the performance of leaffeeding forest insects at individual-level and community-level. The elevated CO2
per se have little influence on the metabolism of insects. Over half of the tree-insect experimental systems show that the performance
of individual insect become poorer under high-CO2 grown trees; but the others show that the insects have just little or no response to the treatments. The direction and magnitude
of the changes in the performance of insects could be mediated by various factors. The effects of treatment are strongly species-dependent.
The magnitude of changes in the phytochemistry, the sensitivity and adaptive capacity of insects to the poorer leaf quality,
the differences in plant growth conditions and experimental methods, and the mediated effects of other environmental factors
(such as soil nutrient availability, light, temperature, O3) were all closely related to the final performance of insects. However, the larvae’s consumption usually increased under
enriched CO2 treatment, which was widely thought to be a compensatory response to poorer plant quality. The experiments on forest community-level
found identically a reduction in herbivory, which was contrary to the results from small-scale experiments. The changes in
insect population and the actual response of consumption by leaf-feeding forest insects under CO2 enrichment remain unclear, and more field-based experiments need to be conducted.

Considerable knowledge exists about the effect of aluminium (Al) on root vitality, but whether elevated levels of Al affect
soil microorganisms is largely unknown. We thus compared soils from Al-treated and control plots of a field experiment with
respect to microbial and chemical parameters, as well as root growth and vitality. The field experiment was established in
a 50-year-old Norway spruce (Picea abies L.) stand where no Al or low concentrations of Al had been added every 7–10 days during the growth season for 7 years. Analysis
of soil solutions collected using zero tension lysimeters and porous suction cups showed that Al treatment lead to increased
concentrations of Al, Ca and Mg and lower pH and [Ca + Mg + K/Al] molar ratio. Corresponding soil analyses showed that soil
pH remained unaffected (pH 3.8), that exchangeable Al increased, while exchangeable Ca and Mg decreased due to the Al treatment.
Root in-growth into cores placed in the upper 20 cm of the soil during three growth seasons was not affected by Al additions,
neither was nutrient concentration or mortality of these roots. The biomass of some taxonomic groups of soil microorganisms,
analyzed using specific membrane components (phospholipid fatty acids; PLFAs), was clearly affected by the imposed Al treatment,
both in the organic soil horizon and in the underlying mineral soil. Microbial community structure in both horizons was also
clearly modified by the Al treatment. Shifts in PLFA trans/cis ratios indicative of short term physiological stress were not observed. Yet, aluminium stress was indicated both by changes
in community structure and in ratios of single PLFAs for treated/untreated plots. Thus, soil microorganisms were more sensitive
indicators of subtle chemical changes in soil than chemical composition and vitality of roots. 相似文献

An efficient and rapid regeneration protocol was developed using shoot apices from germinating seedlings of two cultivars
of sorghum, SPV-462 and M35-1, as explants. A vertical slit given from the base of each dissected apex enhanced the efficiency
of callusing response by two fold. MS medium containing 0.5 mg dm−3 each of 2,4-D and kinetin was most effective in producing friable and embryogenic calli. Scanning electron microscopy of
these calli detected somatic embryogenesis. Calli thus induced gave rise to approximately 42 green shoots per callus in both
the genotypes when transferred to regeneration medium containing 1.5 mg dm−3 kinetin. 相似文献

Vigorous organogenesis can be induced from hypocotyl and root explants of Arabidopsis thaliana using a two-step culture procedure consisting of preculture on callus-inducing medium (CIM) and subsequent culture on shoot-inducing medium (SIM) or root-inducing medium (RIM). With this culture system, we examined the influence of 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU), a thymidine (dT) analogue, on plant organogenesis in vitro. Treatment with BrdU during SIM or RIM culture had negative effects on shoot and root redifferentiation over a broad range of concentrations. When explants were exposed to low concentrations of BrdU during preculture and then transferred onto BrdU-free SIM, shoot redifferentiation was accelerated significantly. At higher doses, BrdU treatment during the pre-culture inhibited shoot redifferentiation strongly in hypocotyl explants, but not in root explants. This suggests that a target of the BrdU action lies within the process of acquisition of cell proliferation competence specifically involved in hypocotyl dedifferentiation. These effects of BrdU were counteracted by the simultaneous addition of excess dT. BrdU-pretreated and untreated explants did not differ significantly in the phytohormone dependency of shoot redifferentiation. Our results provide a basis for future studies on plant organogenesis combining pharmacological analysis with BrdU as a probe and molecular genetics with Arabidopsis mutants. 相似文献

The effects of serotonin on the electrical properties of swim-gating neurons (cell 204) were examined in leech (Hirudo medicinalis) nerve cords. Exposure to serotonin decreased the threshold current required to elicit swim episodes by prolonged depolarization of an individual cell 204 in isolated nerve cords. This effect was correlated with a more rapid depolarization and an increased impulse frequency of cell 204 in the first second of stimulation. In normal leech saline, brief depolarizing current pulses (1 s) injected into cell 204 failed to elicit swim episodes. Following exposure to serotonin, however, identical pulses consistently evoked swim episodes. Thus, serotonin appears to transform cell 204 from a gating to a trigger cell.Serotonin had little effect on the steady-state currentvoltage relation of cell 204. However, serotonin altered the membrane potential trajectories in response to injected current pulses and increased the amplitude of rebound responses occurring at the offset of current pulses. These changes suggest that serotonin modulates one or more voltage dependent conductances in cell 204, resulting in a more rapid depolarization and greater firing rate in response to injected currents. Thus, modulation of intrinsic ionic conductances in cell 204 may account in part for the increased probability of swimming behavior induced by serotonin in intact leeches.Abbreviations AHP

Rapid method of in vitro multiplication of date palm was developed. Shoot tips were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 2 mg dm–3 dimethylaminopurine (2iP) + 1 mg dm–3 naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). Shoot buds were proliferated from white nodular cultures on hormone free medium. Shoot bud proliferation strongly enhanced when cultured on MS-medium contained 3 mg dm–3 2iP + 0.5 mg dm–3 NAA. Culturing on full-strength MS medium showed higher multiplication rate compared with half-strength MS medium. Among four concentrations of sucrose used, 30 g dm–3 speeded up the bud proliferation more than 10, 20 and 40 g dm–3. However, the largest shoot buds were observed with 40 g dm–3 sucrose. Solidification of culture media by 1.75 g dm–3
Phytagel showed the highest proliferation rate, but the largest buds were observed with 1 g dm–3
