In East Africa, cape hares (Lepus capensis) and savanna hares (L. victoriae) look much alike where their ranges overlap. Earlier studies suggested discrimination between the two species by several skull traits, but did not present morphometric statisitics. Our present discriminant analysis based on seven metric variables of the occipital bone related to skull length (condylobasal length) resulted in a high (95.1%) overall probability of correct separation of the two species. While all cape hares were classified correctly, correct classification was a bit lower in savanna hares (88.2%). A principal components analysis of the same variables confirmed the shape difference for the two species. Both region and sex-specific variation in the shape of the studied occipital bone complex was found in savanna hares but not in cape hares. The somewhat reduced level of correct identification of savanna hares might be due to a tendency for higher shape variation. Application of our discriminant analysis to other regions in East Africa is discussed.  相似文献

Environmental hypoxia has effected numerous and well-documented anatomical, physiological and behavioural adaptations in fishes. Comparatively little is known about hypoxia's impacts on sensing because it is difficult to quantify sensory acquisition in vivo. Weakly electric fishes, however, rely heavily on an easily-measurable sensory modality—active electric sensing—whereby individuals emit and detect electric organ discharges (EODs). In this study, hypoxia tolerance of a mormyrid weakly electric fish, Marcusenius victoriae, was assessed by examining both its metabolic and EOD rates using a critical threshold (pcrit) paradigm. The routine metabolic rate was 1.42 mg O2 h−1, and the associated critical oxygen tension was 14.34 mmHg. Routine EOD rate was 5.68 Hz with an associated critical tension of 15.14 mmHg. These metabolic indicators of hypoxia tolerance measured in this study were consistent with those in previous studies on M. victoriae and other weakly electric fishes. Furthermore, our results suggest that some aerobic processes may be reduced in favour of maintaining the EOD rate under extreme hypoxia. These findings underscore the importance of the active electrosensory modality to these hypoxia-tolerant fish.  相似文献

The catfish fauna of Lake Victoria after the Nile perch upsurge   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Stocks of the indigenous catfish species of Lake Victoria have decreased dramatically since the beginning of the 1980s. This decline coincided with the Nile perch boom and concomitant ecological changes in the lake. In deep water, where Nile perch densities were higher, the decline proceeded more quickly than in shallow water. In the former all catfishes eventually vanished. Of the two largest species, Clarias gariepinus and Bagrus docmak, juveniles disappeared faster than adults. This indicates that predation by Nile perch may have played an important role in their decline. Other possible impacts were the deoxygenation of deepwater areas and the decline of haplochromine cichlids which were an important food source for B. docmak, C. gariepinus and Schilbe intermedius. The various catfish species were not all affected to the same extent. The endemic Xenoclarias eupogon, which lived predominantly in deep water, may have become extinct. B. docmak currently seems to be mainly restricted to refugia in rocky habitats. Synodontis victoriae and S. afrofischeri are still present in small numbers in shallow littoral areas. Schilbe intermedius and C. gariepinus seem to be the least affected of the catfishes in littoral and sublittoral areas. This may be caused, among other reasons, by their smaller habitat overlap with Nile perch than the other species. S. intermedius is partly pelagic, and a considerable part of the C. gariepinus stock lives in bodies of water surrounding the lake. The patterns of decline of the catfishes are very similar to those observed for haplochromine cichlids in the lake. The importance of catfishes for the fisheries in the lake is currently negligible.  相似文献

Invasive ants threaten native biodiversity and ecosystem function worldwide. Although their principal direct impact is usually the displacement of native ants, they may also affect other invertebrates. The Argentine ant, Linepithema humile (Dolichoderinae), one of the most widespread invasive ant species, has invaded native habitat where it abuts peri‐urban development in coastal Victoria in south‐eastern Australia. Here we infer impacts of the Argentine ant on native ants and other litter and ground‐dwelling invertebrates by comparing their abundance and taxonomic composition in coastal scrub forest either invaded or uninvaded by the Argentine ant. Species composition of native ants at bait stations and extracted from litter differed significantly between Argentine ant‐invaded and uninvaded sites and this was consistent across years. Argentine ants had a strong effect on epigeic ants, which were either displaced or reduced in abundance. The native ant Rhytidoponera victoriae (Ponerinae), numerically dominant at uninvaded sites, was completely absent from sites invaded by the Argentine ant. However, small hypogeic ants, including Solenopsis sp. (Myrmicinae) and Heteroponera imbellis (Heteroponerinae), were little affected. Linepithema humile had no detectable effect upon the abundance and richness of other litter invertebrates. However, invertebrate group composition differed significantly between invaded and uninvaded sites, owing to the varied response of several influential groups (e.g. Collembola and Acarina). Floristics, habitat structure and measured environmental factors did not differ significantly between sites either invaded or uninvaded by Argentine ants, supporting the contention that differences in native ant abundance and species composition are related to invasion. Changes in the native ant community wrought by Argentine ant invasion have important implications for invertebrate communities in southern Australia and may affect key processes, including seed dispersal.  相似文献

The present study was performed to produce the protease using free and immobilized cells of locally isolated cold-adapted psychrotolerant yeast Cryptococcus victoriae CA-8. Cell immobilization was performed using sodium alginate as entrapping agent. The best conditions for enzyme production by both free and immobilized cells of the yeast were temperature of 15°C and initial pH of 8.0. The optimal incubation times were 72 and 96 h for immobilized and free cells, respectively. Immobilized cells were reused in 3 successive reaction cycles without any loss in the maximum protease activity. Little decreases in the protease activity were observed in 4 and 5 cycles. Under the optimized conditions, the maximum enzyme activities were determined as 12.1 and 13.5 U/mL for free and immobilized cells, respectively. This is a first attempt on cold-active alkaline protease production by free and/or immobilized cells of yeasts. Besides, the protease activity of the yeast C. victoriae CA-8 was investigated for the first time in the present study.  相似文献

Abstract .Truck trap collections of Ceratopogonidae were made over a period of 27 months (November 1973–February 1976) at Tingalpa Creek, in southeast Queensland, Australia. Six collections were made on each of 95 days, giving 570 observations and a total of 29 378 Culicoides . Two collections were made before, one at, and three after sunset. Separate analyses were made of the catches of thirteen entities: male and female C. austropalpalis , C. brevitarsis , C. marksi , C. marmoratus and C. victoriae , female C. henryi and C. longior , and total C. bundyensis .
Catches were dominated by C. brevitarsis (35.2%) and C. marmoratus (32.3%) and, with C. victoriae , were taken on almost every collecting day over all seasons. Sex ratios (M:F) varied from 0:100 for C. longior to 130:100 for C. marksi . Collections of all entities, except female C. henryi , were greatest (50–70% of the daily catch) at sunset. In winter there was substantial activity in the hour before sunset. Time of day was the most important variable, accounting for 15–45% of the observed variation. Between-day differences were significant for all except C. austropalpalis, C. victoriae and male C. marksi . Culicoides brevitarsis, C. bundyensis and C. longior had highly significant annual cycles, C. victoriae and female C. austropalpalis had significant lunar cycles, and C. longior had a significant tidal cycle. Logarithms of catches of female C. austropalpalis, C. brevitarsis, C. henryi, C. marmoratus, and female and male C. victoriae were inversely related to linear wind speed. Log catches of female C. austropalpalis, C. brevitarsis, C. marmoratus and C. victoriae , and male C. marksi and C. victoriae were positively related to temperature (quadratic).  相似文献
