Separately delivered visual and lateral line stimuli elicit similar but not identical orientation and approach by intact, sighted Xenopus. Response frequencies for visual stimuli declined sharply for distant or caudal stimuli while those for lateral line stimuli changed little. Turn angles correlated highly with stimulus angles but were smaller on average, so regression slopes were less than one. Regression slopes were smaller for visual than for lateral line stimuli, but this apparent difference was due to different distributions of stimulus distance interacting with the toad’s rotation center. Errors in final headings, most often under-rotations, did not differ by modality. Frequencies of lunges and arm capture movements were higher for visual stimuli both overall and especially for rostral proximal stimuli. The results demonstrate accurate orientation by sighted Xenopus to visual and lateral line stimuli; they are consistent with expectations based on in-register tectal maps. Orientation to lateral line stimuli is similar to previous results with blinded animals, revealing no heightened acuity in the latter. Modality differences indicate that the lateral line system is better for omnidirectional orientation and approach to distant stimuli whereas the visual system is more attuned to nearby rostral stimuli and more apt to mediate strikes.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available to authorised users in the online version of this article at . 相似文献

the Medfly, Ceratitis capitata, provide opportunity for the production of protein for industrial, agricultural and healthcare purposes on a very large scale.
In this study, we report the germ-line transformation and expression of a cDNA encoding human growth hormone (hGH) in transgenic
Drosophila using the Minos transposon. Production and secretion of a bioactive hGH into the haemolymph of transgenic larvae was demonstrated by immunoblot
analysis, ELISA and a proliferation bioassay. Stable expression of hGH was observed over 50 generations. The results indicate
that mass reared transgenic diptera with a rapid period of larval growth could provide cost effective production systems for

We evaluated the influence of prior ovipositional experience on host selection in four solitary parasitoids, Aphidius erviHaliday, A. pisivorusSmith, A. smithiSharma & Subba Rao, and Praon pequodorumViereck (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae). When provided simultaneously with equal numbers of two species of aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum(Harris) and Macrosiphum creeliiDavis (Homoptera: Aphididae), all four parasitoids showed a moderate to strong preference for A. pisum.This preference did not increase after sampling, except in P. pequodorum.Learning did not alter host selection behavior in A. erviand P. pequodorum.However, females of A. pisivorusconditioned on A. pisumselected fewer M. creeliithan unconditioned wasps and wasps conditioned on M. creelii.It is suggested that prior ovipositional experience influences a parasitoid's expectations of the kinds of hosts available, but it does not alter the (innate) rank order of hosts. 相似文献

The influence of sampling and sample treatment upon adenylic nucleotide (ATP, ADP, AMP) content of microplankton is studied. Changes in light conditions during nigh-sampling and extracting do not induce significant variations, in the adenylic nucleotide content of microplankton or in energy charge values.The contribution of zooplankton (size up to 200 µm) to microplankton adenosine values can be neglected for inshore surface waters and traditional sample volumes (about one liter). This result can been explained by the low density of zooplankton in such a small sample volume and by differences in efficiency of the extracting method used.

An in-vitro model was developed to study the effects of a long-term exposure with a low concentration of ochratoxin A (OTA)
or ochratoxin C (OTC) on a human monocytic cell line (THP-1).
Cells were propagated in 24-well cell culture plates for 15 days. OTA and OTC preparations, respectively, at a concentration
of 1 ng/ml were included in the cell culture medium during the whole cultivation period. At the end of the exposure time,
parameters of cell viability and cell function were examined.
After 15 days of exposure to ochratoxins, viability and function of the THP-1 cell line were modulated. Mitochondrial activity
and the production of IL-6 were increased by all mycotoxin preparations. Cell membrane integrity was disturbed, proliferation
and the production of TNF-α and IL-8 were inhibited. These parameters were most severely affected by mycotoxin preparations
containing OTC.
Our results show that long term exposure to OTA and especially OTC in low concentrations can cause subtle alterations of cell
viability and function which may have remarkable consequences for human and animal health. In this context it seems to be
necessary to study the contamination of food and feed stuffs with OTC more intensively.

A determination of the sustainability performance of a company ought to fulfill certain requirements. It has to take into account the direct impacts from on-site processes as well as indirect impacts embodied in the supply chains of a company. This life cycle thinking is the common theme of popular footprint analyses, such as carbon, ecological, or water footprinting. All these indicators can be incorporated into one common and consistent accounting and reporting scheme based on economic input−output analysis, extended with data from all three dimensions of sustainability. We introduce such a triple-bottom-line accounting framework and software tool and apply it in a case study of a small company in the United Kingdom. Results include absolute impacts and relative intensities of indicators and are put into perspective by a benchmark comparison with the economic sector to which the company belongs. Production layer decomposition and structural path analysis provide further valuable detail, identifying the amount and location of triple-bottom-line impacts in individual upstream supply chains. The concept of shared responsibility has been applied to avoid double-counting and noncomparability of results. Although in this work we employ a single-region model for the sake of illustration, we discuss how to extend our ideas to international supply chains. We discuss the limitations of the approach and the implications for corporate sustainability. 相似文献

The role of Southern European peninsulas as glacial refugia for temperate species has been widely established, but phylogeographic patterns within refugia are being only recently addressed. Here we describe the phylogeographic patterns for Southern water vole ( Arvicola sapidus ) in its whole distribution across Iberia and France. Control region and cytochrome b sequences were obtained for 228 samples from 130 localities across Iberia and France. Eighty-five haplotypes were found in total yielding a high overall mitochondrial diversity (π = 0.027; H = 0.974). Phylogeographic structure was relatively shallow (3.1% average intraspecific divergence) with few supported clades and 95% and 90% maximum parsimony unconnected networks, but significant, as reflected in increased pairwise nucleotide divergences with distance ( r = 0.197, P = 0.03) and significant autocorrelation up to ∼500 km. Spatial analysis of molecular variance analysis detected seven geographical groups explaining 43.73% of the total mitochondrial variation. We detected demographic expansions in three of these groups. A recent colonization of France from Iberia was suggested and estimated around 62 000 years bp by an isolation-with-migration model. Our results suggest the contribution of episodes of isolation in glacial subrefugia in Iberia, but seem to exclude a long-term isolation over successive glacial cycles. Phylogeographic divergence was probably tempered by relatively large population sizes and rapid and extensive mixing among subrefugia during interglacials, that might have eroded the phylogeographic structure accumulated at glacial peaks. Phenotypic differences in A. sapidus do not delineate historically isolated intraspecific divisions and do not warrant subspecific delimitations. An immunodominant heat shock protein (Hsp 24) was purified from Vibrio cholerae O139 at 42 degrees C and used as an immunomodulator for studying the gut immune response. T cell clone and T cell line specific for the Hsp 24 were generated from the lymphocytes of lamina propria and intra-epithelial lymphocytes of mice orally infected with V. cholerae O139, respectively. The T cell clone was TCR alphabeta(+), CD4(+) and appeared to play an important role in the functioning of gut B-lymphocytes. The T cell line had heterogenous population of CD8+ and CD4+ cells, most of which were found to be TCR alphabeta(+) and a minor population was TCR gammadelta(+). The lymphokine profile of T cell line showed IFN-gamma to be the most abundant lymphokine followed by IL-2 and IL-4. The possible involvement of alternative pathway of activation for T cell clone was also addressed in this study. The splenocytes showed an up-regulation of their CD2 receptor expression on stimulation with the Hsp-24. The pattern of lymphokines released by splenocytes stimulated with the Hsp-24 showed no particular cell type to be responsible for mounting immune response.
