Plant trichomes come in a variety of shapes, sizes and cellular composition. Some types, commonly called glandular trichomes, produce large amounts of specialized (secondary) metabolites of diverse classes. Trichomes are implicated in a variety of adaptive processes, including defense against herbivores and micro-organisms as well as in ion homeostasis. Because trichomes protrude from the epidermis and can often be easily separated from it and harvested, the mRNAs, proteins and small molecules that they contain are unusually accessible to analysis. This property makes them excellent experimental systems for identification of the enzymes and pathways responsible for the synthesis of the specialized metabolites found in these structures and sometimes elsewhere in the plant. We review the literature on the biochemistry of trichomes and consider the attributes that might make them highly useful targets for plant metabolic engineering. 相似文献

The material of Micromeria s.s. ( M. sect. Micromeria ) from tropical to southern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula is revised. The endemic Ethiopian M. unguentaria Schweinf. is retained as a species, while the other African and Arabian material of Micromeria is included in M. imbricata (Forssk.) C. Chr. M. imbricata is divided into the following three varieties: var. imbricata , which is very polymorphic, widespread in the African highlands, and also occurs in Arabia; var. rhodesiaca (Elly Walther & K.H. Walther) Ryding, which occurs in the highlands of Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe; and var. villosa (Elly Walther & K.H. Walther) Ryding, which occurs in montane to alpine areas of Ethiopia and East Africa. Discontinuities in the variation within var. imbricata , observed at some localities, are suggested to be a result of partial autogamy. Problems with delimitation between M. imbricata , the East Asiatic M. biflora (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) Benth. and some Mediterranean species are discussed. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 155 , 427–446. 相似文献

Lavandin (Lavandula x Emeric ex Loiseleur) is an aromatic plant, the essential oil of which is widely used in the perfume, cosmetic, flavouring and pharmaceutical industries. The qualitative or quantitative modification of its terpenescontaining essential oil by genetic engineering could have important scientific and commercial applications. In this study, we report the first Agrobacterium tumefaciensmediated gene transfer into lavandin. The transformation protocol was optimized by lengthening precultivation and cocultivation periods and by testing five different bacterial strains. We obtained transformed callus lines at a frequency of 40–70 with strains AGL1/GI, EHA105/GI and C58/GI. Transgenic shoots were regenerated from these kanamycin resistant calli and rooted on selective medium with 150mg l-1 kanamycin. The final percentage of transgenic plants obtained varied from 3 to 9, according to the strain used, within 6 months of culture. The presence of the introduced glucuronidase and neomycin phosphotransferase II genes was shown both by PCR and Southern blot analysis. Transgene expression was investigated using histoenzymatic glucuronidase assays, leaf callus assays and RTPCR. Results showed that both glucuronidase and neomycin phosphotransferase II genes were expressed at a high level in at least 41 of the transgenic plants regenerated. This efficient transformation strategy could be used to modify some genetic traits of lavandin (flower colour, pathogens resistance) and to study the biosynthesis of the major monoterpene components of its essential oil (linalool, linalyl acetate, camphor and 1,8cineole). 相似文献
