Three simple interval estimates for the risk ratio in inverse sampling are considered. The first two interval estimates are derived on the basis of Fieller's Theorem and the delta method with the logarithmic transformation, respectively. The third interval estimate is derived on the basis of an F-test statistic proposed by BENNETT (1981) for testing equal probabilities of a disease between two comparison groups when the disease is rare. To evaluate the performance of these three methods, a Monte Carlo simulation is used to compare the actual coverage probability with the nominal confidence level for each method and to estimate the expected length of the corresponding confidence interval in a variety of situations. On the basis of the results found in the simulation, we have concluded that the method with the logarithmic transformation is either equivalent to or better than the other two methods for all situations considered here. 相似文献

Does Mother Nature really prefer rare species or are log‐left‐skewed SADs a sampling artefact? 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1

Intensively sampled species abundance distributions (SADs) show left‐skew on a log scale. That is, there are too many rare species to fit a lognormal distribution. I propose that this log‐left‐skew might be a sampling artefact. Monte Carlo simulations show that taking progressively larger samples from a log‐unskewed distribution (such as the lognormal) causes log‐skew to decrease asymptotically (move towards ?∞) until it reaches the level of the underlying distribution (zero in this case). In contrast, accumulating certain types of repeated small samples results in a log‐skew that becomes progressively more log‐left‐skewed to a level well beyond the underlying distribution. These repeated samples correspond to samples from the same site over many years or from many sites in 1 year. Data from empirical datasets show that log‐skew generally goes from positive (right‐skewed) to negative (left‐skewed) as the number of temporally or spatially replicated samples increases. This suggests caution when interpreting log‐left‐skew as a pattern that needs biological interpretation. 相似文献

Abstract. A major objection to the convenient sampling of Chenopodiacean bladders by brushing in aqueous solutions is the suspected leakage of ions from the leaf blade. To overcome this problem, a new method of sampling bladder hair is described, which also achieves rapid and quantitative separation and, at the same time, yields bladder samples of undoubtedly high purity. Leakage is stopped by the aid of liquid nitrogen. Comparison of this method to removal of bladders by brushing in aquenous solutions effectively confirm the validity of the customary method beyond dispute. 相似文献

Helicopters can be used to collect water samples from many lakes over a wide geographic area within a relatively short time period. Here we report the results from an experiment in which sequential water samples from a lake were collected first from a nonmotorized boat and then immediately afterward from a helicopter. No significant differences were found between the means of the measurement of 20 chemical parameters for the two methods of collection. When compared to obtaining samples from a boat, collection of samples from a helicopter platform had no effect on the content of the water samples. 相似文献

For three years chironomid larvae were collected bimonthly with a grab sampler in two deep storage reservoirs in The Netherlands. Chironomid pupal exuviae were collected monthly, from April to November, with a handnet. Net samples yielded more taxa than grab samples. The taxa found in net samples originated from more habitats, than taxa found in grab samples. The relative contribution of Orthocladiinae was much larger in net samples. Based on the results obtained in the two reservoirs, some advantages and disadvantages of both sampling methods are discussed. 相似文献

The aquatic Hyphomycete spora of the Cringle Brook, Lincs, was examined by foam sampling and by the use of cellophane impaction traps between August, 1968 and January, 1970.The species most frequently found (Tetracladium marchalianum, Alatospora acuminata and Flagellospora curvula) were generally in agreement with those found by other workers in temperate areas. Impaction trap samples generally contained fewer species than foam samples but filiform spore types such as Flagellospora were more frequently found on traps than in foam suggesting that impaction is more selective towards the filiform spore type than is foam. Many species increased in frequency in autumn accompanying and following leaf fall, and the winter spora was dominated by Alatospora acuminata, Clavariopsis aquatica, Clavatospora stellata, Flagellospora curvula and Lemonniera aquatica. During the summer the spora was dominated by Tetracladium marchalianum.The role of foam and impaction in the balance of aquatic spore populations is discussed in relation to techniques available for their study. 相似文献

The limited population sizes used in many quantitative trait locus (QTL) detection experiments can lead to underestimation
of QTL number, overestimation of QTL effects, and failure to quantify QTL interactions. We used the barley/barley stripe rust
pathosystem to evaluate the effect of population size on the estimation of QTL parameters. We generated a large (n=409) population of doubled haploid lines derived from the cross of two inbred lines, BCD47 and Baronesse. This population
was evaluated for barley stripe rust severity in the Toluca Valley, Mexico, and in Washington State, USA, under field conditions.
BCD47 was the principal donor of resistance QTL alleles, but the susceptible parent also contributed some resistance alleles.
The major QTL, located on the long arm of chromosome 4H, close to the Mlo gene, accounted for up to 34% of the phenotypic variance. Subpopulations of different sizes were generated using three methods—resampling,
selective genotyping, and selective phenotyping—to evaluate the effect of population size on the estimation of QTL parameters.
In all cases, the number of QTL detected increased with population size. QTL with large effects were detected even in small
populations, but QTL with small effects were detected only by increasing population size. Selective genotyping and/or selective
phenotyping approaches could be effective strategies for reducing the costs associated with conducting QTL analysis in large
populations. The method of choice will depend on the relative costs of genotyping versus phenotyping.
