Interactions between drought stress and inbreeding depression were studied in Lychnis flos-cuculi. Four inbreeding levels (F = 0, 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75), and three watering treatments were used. Performance was scored for germination rate and proportion, survival, plant size, proportion of plants flowering, flowering date, stem height, number of flowers, flower size, anther weight, fruiting proportion and number of capsules. Multiplicative fitness values were estimated from these traits. Inbreeding affected most of the traits studied, and a severe inbreeding depression was found for the combined fitness estimates. The higher inbreeding depression found here relative to the same family groups in a former experiment may reflect greater dominance and suppression in the present experiment at higher density. 相似文献

In a controlled crossing experiment on Lychnis flos-cuculi plants in the greenhouse, outbred and selfed maternal plants were each treated with pollen from unrelated plants, siblings and selves. The seeds thus obtained had expected inbreeding coefficients of 0, 0.25 and 0.5 for the outbred maternal plants, and 0, 0.5 and 0.75 for the selfed maternal plants. Seed abortion rate, seed weight and germination rate were estimated. Seedlings were transplanted to an outdoor garden, and monitored for survival, probability of flowering, number of capsules and area of capsules next spring. Inbred seeds germinated slower and in lower proportions than those less inbred, and seedlings had lower survival, flowering, fruit set and area of capsules if inbred. Combined fitness values were estimated from the survival and fecundity components, and severe inbreeding depression was detected for these estimates (0.51 and 0.56 for one generation of selfing). The fitness function decreased linearly with the increase in inbreeding coefficient, which is as expected if the inbreeding depression is additive among loci. 相似文献

Developmental instability in the form of increased fluctuating asymmetry can be caused by either genetic or environmental stress. Because extinctions can be attributed broadly to these factors, fluctuating asymmetry may provide a sensitive tool for detecting such stresses. We studied the level of fluctuating asymmetry of flowers of a perennial outcrossing plant species, Lychnis viscaria, both in natural and common-garden populations. The degree of flower asymmetry was higher in small, isolated, and marginal populations of the species range. These marginal populations also were the most homozygous. In the core area of the species' range, flowers were more symmetrical The level of asymmetry was correlated with both population size and heterozygosity. However, a partial correlation analysis revealed that when the impact of population size was controlled for, there was a negative relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and heterozygosity, whereas when controlling for heterozygosity, no relationship between population size and fluctuating asymmetry was found. This indicates that genetic consequences of small population size probably underlie the relationship between the level of asymmetry and population size. Results from a transplantation experiment showed that individuals subjected to a higher environmental stress had an increased level of asymmetry compared to control plants. In the common-garden conditions the level of fluctuating asymmetry did not differ between the central and marginal populations. This suggests that presumably both genetic and environmental factors affected to the higher level of asymmetry among marginal populations compared to central ones. In all we conclude that even though fluctuating asymmetry seems to be a sensitive tool for detecting stresses, results from studies focusing on only one factor should be interpreted with caution. 相似文献

Selection on the timing of seedling emergence was investigated in an experimental population of Lychnis flos-cuculi, a perennial hay-meadow species. Seeds obtained from a full diallel cross of 8 genotypes from a field population were sown along an environment gradient that included the parental site. Significant directional selection for early emergence was found and the intensity of selection varied among sites. Emergence time varied significantly among progeny families of different maternal and paternal genotypes. These differences could be attributed to parental effects whereas narrow-sense heritabilities were close to zero. Survivorship until autumn differed among progeny of paternal families. Survivorship of maternal progeny varied among sites. Whereas differences in survival and plant size among individuals from different emergence cohorts persisted over the winter, the significance of these differences among progeny from different parental genotypes disappeared. It is suggested that a response to selection on emergence time might be low since (1) the narrow sense heritability was low, (2) parental genotypes differed in their effect on offspring emergence time when used as female parent or as pollen donor and (3) there was a family x site interaction for survival. Families with relatively early emerging seedlings also had a significantly higher seed weight, emergence percentage, and plant weight although the strength of these among-family correlations varied among sites. It is therefore not likely that simultaneous selection on emergence time and either of these traits would retard a response to selection on emergence time. 相似文献

The contemporary pattern of intraspecific genetic variation can indicate the relative role of gene flow and local differentiation in shaping the evolutionary history and future trajectory of a species. To assess the recent influence of contrasting life history and demographic characteristics on genetic structure within a group of closely related species, patterns of genetic differentiation (F(ST) and related statistics) and isolation by distance (IBD) were compared among 17 congeneric herbaceous plant species. Data came from 35 published studies of 16 species, and a previously unpublished analysis of chloroplast genetic variation in the rare endemic Silene rotundifolia. Among-population genetic variance was most strongly influenced by the type of genetic marker used; cytoplasmic markers showed larger values than allozyme and anonymous nuclear markers. Other independently significant factors were geographical range size and, for allozyme studies, reproductive system; in particular, endemism and hermaphroditism were associated with higher among-population genetic variance, whereas large native geographical range and dioecy were associated with lower among-population variance. Over equivalent spatial scales, dioecious populations also showed weaker IBD than hermaphrodites, perhaps because increased population transience and/or variance in the spatial pattern of gene flow are more closely associated with dioecy in this genus. Invasive populations had both highly variable among-population genetic variance, and no evidence for IBD, consistent with nonequilibrium conditions. Other analysed factors including predominant pollinator had no discernable influence on genetic structure or patterns of IBD. In general, this comparative approach appears to be valuable for synthesizing the complementary information provided by F-statistics and IBD, and for indicating the relative importance of particular biological factors in shaping genetic variation within different species of a closely related plant group. 相似文献

We cloned microsatellite repeats from ragged robin Lychnis flos‐cuculi (Caryophyllaceae) and developed 20 primer pairs for microsatellite marker analysis. We used 18 individuals of a large Swiss population to screen microsatellites. Seven loci were polymorphic. Between seven and 11 alleles were found per locus and the observed heterozygosity was between 0.308 and 0.813. Observed heterozygote deficits were significant in five of the seven loci, in line with the mixed mating system of L. flos‐cuculi. 相似文献

Selection responses in natural plant populations depend on how the phenotypic variation of traits is composed. The contributions of nuclear genetic, maternal, paternal, environmental and inbreeding effects to variation in time to germination, germination percentage, and seed- and seedling size were studied in a population of Lychnis flos-cuculi. It was found that: (1) Maternal effects predominated in the determination of progeny seed size and germination characteristics; (2) Maternal environment during seed development was less important than maternal genotype; (3) Small but significant variation within maternal families could be observed among individuals sired by different fathers; (4) Additive genetic variance was significant for seedling size 4 weeks after germination. In conclusion, selection shortly after emergence will mainly favour particular maternal genotypes, while selection later in the life cycle may act upon zygotic genotypes. Inbreeding depression was significant, especially for vegetative growth. Consistent differences were found among maternal genotypes in the degree of variation in the time to germination, suggesting that selection could operate to favour polymorphic or uniform germination behaviour. 相似文献
