Abstract. The nearest‐neighbour technique is used to infer competition and facilitation between the three most abundant species in a semi‐arid region of western South Africa. Relationships among the shrubs Leipoldtia schultzei and Ruschia robusta, which are leaf‐succulent members of the Mesembryanthemaceae (‘mesembs’) and Hirpicium alienatum a non‐succulent Asteraceae, were compared on two adjacent sites with different histories of browsing intensity. Competition was more prevalent and more important than facilitation. The only evidence for facilitation was found at the heavily‐browsed site where the palatable Hirpicium was larger under the unpalatable Leipoldtia. Generally the prevalence and importance of competition was reduced at the heavily‐browsed site. Strong evidence was obtained for intraspecific competition in each of the three species; also, competition was evident between the two mesembs, where Leipoldtia was competitively dominant over Ruschia, although neither species inhibited Hirpicium. Minimal competition between the mesembs and the asteraceous shrub was interpreted in terms of differentiation in rooting depth, and competition within the mesembs, in terms of overlap in rooting depth. The mesembs had the bulk of their roots in the top 5 cm of soil, while the asteraceous shrub had the bulk of its roots, and all its fine roots, at greater depths. The shallow‐rooted morphology of the mesembs is well adapted to utilize small rainfall events, which occur frequently in the Succulent Karoo, and do not penetrate the soil deeply. Modifications of existing methods are applied for analysing nearest‐neighbour interactions.  相似文献

The two-oscillator model of human circadian rhythmicity was analyzed when a zeitgeber relative intensity of 1, 0.5, or 0.1 was introduced into the equations. Fourier analysis was compared with dynamic analysis such as attractor reconstruction or Liapunov exponent calculation. After a 50 or 90% reduction in zeitgeber intensity, the dynamics of the system became equivalent and differed significantly from those of a system with maximal zeitgeber intensity. When 10% aleatory noise was added to the data, the analysis was still applicable, and the results obtained were essentially the same as in the absence of noise. Dynamic analysis could thus provide a distinct classification for periodic data, based on the type of analysis.  相似文献

An epi-illuminated microscope configuration for use in fluorescence correlation spectroscopy in bulk solutions has been analyzed. For determining the effective sample dimensions the spatial distribution of the molecule detection efficiency has been computed and conditions for achieving quasi-cylindrical sample shape have been derived. Model experiments on translational diffusion of rhodamine 6G have been carried out using strong focusing of the laser beam, small pinhole size and an avalanche photodiode in single photon counting mode as the detector. A considerable decrease in background light intensity and measurement time has been observed. The background light is 40 times weaker than the fluorescence signal from one molecule of Rh6G, and the correlation function with signal-to-noise ratio of 150 can be collected in 1 second. Laboratory feeding trials were conducted to determine how light intensity affects foraging success by the visual piscivore, the largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides ). Foraging success was greater than 95% at light levels ranging from low intensity daylight (2.43 × 102 lx) to moonlight (3 × 10−3 lx), but declined significantly to 62% at starlight (2 × 10−4 lx) and near 0% in total darkness. Over a range of low to high water clarities (0.5, 2.0, and 4.0 m Secchi depth), estimated depth limits for feeding during the day ranged between 5.5 to 44 m and from 1.6 to 13 m at night during a full moon. At starlight, light intensity rapidly attenuated to a level below the feeding threshold within 0.5 m of the surface at all water clarities. The depth of the water column available for feeding in low clarity water (0.5 m Secchi) was 67 and 75% less than at moderate (2.0 m Secchi) and high (4.0 m Secchi) water clarities. The findings illustrate how differences in the light environment can have important ramifications for predator-prey interactions.  相似文献

Summary C.rufescens excystment, experimentally induced, corresponds to a general metabolism recovery of the cell, previously in a resting phase. The cytoplasm changes without any polarity, and organelles like gullet and flagella redifferentiate. The thylakoids develop mainly from the stored lipidic compounds which then disappear. Phycoerythrin immediately fills the intrathylakoidal lumen. Pigment synthesis seems closely associated with the development of membranes. The activated cell divides and the cyst wall breaks down. The destruction of the wall begins in the median layer and is followed by a mechanical rupture of the external and internal layers. Each germinative cyst releases two or four fully differentiated cells. There is an exact symmetry between excystment and encystment, all the transformations of theC. rufescens cell being reversible.  相似文献

The intensity of light scattered at 90° to the incident beam and the effective hydrodynamic radii of mitochondria incubated under a variety of conditions have been measured. Addition of high concentrations of uncouplers to respiring mitochondria resulted in a decrease in scatter which was not due to swelling. Addition of valinomycin to mitochondria depleted of substrate in K+-free medium produced an increase in scatter that was not due to shrinking. It is concluded that changes in the intensity of scattered light are not reliable indices of changes of volume of mitochondria, and that changes in conformation with changes in metabolic state dominate changes in light scatter. A molecular mechanism for the effect of metabolic state upon the scattered intensity is suggested.  相似文献

Analyses of four years of in situ sulfate uptake by microplankton communities in two,trophically different lakes showed that about 12% of the experiments had dark uptake equal to or higher than uptake at ambient light. Three axenic algal cultures subjected to different light intensities showed that sulfate uptake patterns, relative to primary productivity, vary with species and although sulfate uptake tends to decrease at lower light levels, at or very near darkness, in physiologically active (young) cultures sulfate uptake frequently increases dramatically. The field data, when summarized according to the light received, shows the same trends seen in the axenic cultures. It is concluded that sulfate uptake is only loosely associated with inorganic carbon uptake (primary productivity) and that under some circumstances a low level of light may increase the sulfate uptake rate.  相似文献

Effects of grazing on grassland soil carbon: a global review   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Soils of grasslands represent a large potential reservoir for storing CO2, but this potential likely depends on how grasslands are managed for large mammal grazing. Previous studies found both strong positive and negative grazing effects on soil organic carbon (SOC) but explanations for this variation are poorly developed. Expanding on previous reviews, we performed a multifactorial meta‐analysis of grazer effects on SOC density on 47 independent experimental contrasts from 17 studies. We explicitly tested hypotheses that grazer effects would shift from negative to positive with decreasing precipitation, increasing fineness of soil texture, transition from dominant grass species with C3 to C4 photosynthesis, and decreasing grazing intensity, after controlling for study duration and sampling depth. The six variables of soil texture, precipitation, grass type, grazing intensity, study duration, and sampling depth explained 85% of a large variation (±150 g m?2 yr?1) in grazing effects, and the best model included significant interactions between precipitation and soil texture (P = 0.002), grass type, and grazing intensity (P = 0.012), and study duration and soil sampling depth (P = 0.020). Specifically, an increase in mean annual precipitation of 600 mm resulted in a 24% decrease in grazer effect size on finer textured soils, while on sandy soils the same increase in precipitation produced a 22% increase in grazer effect on SOC. Increasing grazing intensity increased SOC by 6–7% on C4‐dominated and C4–C3 mixed grasslands, but decreased SOC by an average 18% in C3‐dominated grasslands. We discovered these patterns despite a lack of studies in natural, wildlife‐dominated ecosystems, and tropical grasslands. Our results, which suggest a future focus on why C3 vs. C4‐dominated grasslands differ so strongly in their response of SOC to grazing, show that grazer effects on SOC are highly context‐specific and imply that grazers in different regions might be managed differently to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.  相似文献

Responses of 117 single- or multi-units in the auditory cortex (AC) of bats (Myotis lucifugus) to tone bursts of different stimulus durations (1– 400 ms) were studied over a wide range of stimulus intensities to determine how stimulus duration is represented in the AC. 36% of AC neurons responded more strongly to short stimulus durations showing short-pass duration response functions, 31% responded equally to all pulse durations (i.e., all-pass), 18% responded preferentially to stimuli having longer durations (i.e., long-pass), and 15% responded to a narrow range of stimulus durations (i.e., band-pass). Neurons showing long-pass and short-pass duration response functions were narrowly distributed within two horizontal slabs of the cortex, over the rostrocaudal extent of the AC. The effects of stimulus level on duration selectivity were evaluated for 17 AC neurons. For 65% of these units, an increase in stimulus intensity resulted in a progressive decrease in the best duration. In light of the unusual intensity-dependent duration responses of AC neurons, we hypothesized that the response selectivities of AC neurons is different from that in the brainstem.
