Synopsis The sexual pattern of the zebra goby Lythrypnus zebra, is an apparent exception to sex allocation theory. Most L. zebra are simultaneous hermaphrodites (i.e., have active female and male gonadal tissue), yet it appears they do not reproduce as males and females simultaneously. Understanding the maintenance of simultaneous hermaphroditism in L. zebra could expand sex allocation theory. In this study, I used a comparison with the blue-banded goby, Lythrypnus dalli, a sympatric congener with a qualitatively similar sexual pattern, to investigate the role of male spawning rate, body size and sexual flexibility in determining the sexual pattern of L. zebra and to isolate differences between the species that might explain their differing sexual patterns. Using field measurements of male nesting success, I found no differences between the species in the body size of nesting males suggesting that large size is associated with successful male reproduction in both species. In addition, nesting males spawned at approximately three times the rate of females in both species; thus, reproduction via male function can be equally advantageous relative to adopting the female role. However, the nest longevity of L. zebra males was shorter than that of L. dalli males, suggesting reproduction via male function may be less reliable in L. zebra. Finally, under laboratory conditions, L. zebra females tended to prefer large mates, and L. zebra were able to re-allocate in both directions, exhibiting a greater capacity to switch than L. dalli. Given these results, I suggest that switching between the sexes plays a greater role in maintaining simultaneous hermaphroditism in L. zebra than L. dalli, perhaps because male reproduction is not as consistent in L. zebra. Sexual flexibility may be an important factor affecting patterns of sex allocation, generally. 相似文献

Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis was employed to analyse genetic variation, at 19 isozyme loci, in six putatively related species of gobies ( Brachygobius aggregatus, B. doriae, Pandaka lidwilli, Pseudogobius olorum, Pseudogobius sp. and Redigobius sp.), using seven other gobiine species as an outgroup. Allozyme data was analysed both cladistically and phenetically, all treatments confirming the monophyly of the group. Pandaka is confirmed as the sister genus to Brachygobius , these genera forming a crown group, with Redigobius and Pseudogobius forming successive sister groups. This scenario is in agreement with morphological hypotheses of phylogeny. However, this lineage appears to be relatively unrelated to other groups within the Gobiinae 相似文献

Two new shrimp-associated gobies,Amblyeleotris yanoi sp. nov. andA. masuii sp. nov. are described on the basis of specimens from Iriomote-jima Island and Okinawa-jima Islands, Okinawa Prefecture,
Japan.A. yanoi is distinguished from other members of the genus by the combination of the following characters: 14 anal fin soft rays, 19
pectoral fin rays, 97–103 longitudinal scales, a candle flame-shaped marking on the caudal fin, a very low membrane connecting
the pelvic fins and absence of a ventral frenum.A. masuii differs from all other congeners by having 92–97 longitudinal scales, the length of the interpelvic connecting membrane relative
to the longest pelvic fin ray (0.43–0.66), black blotches on the sides of the chin, and blue spots on the opercle and preopercle. 相似文献

A new genus and two new species of gobiid fishes (Perciformes) from the Chagos Archipelago,Central Indian Ocean 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Synopsis A recent (1979) expedition to the Chagos Archipelago resulted in the collection of about 40 new taxa of fishes. A new genus,Trimmatom, and two new species,T. nanus andT. offucius, are described here. The new genus is characterized by having all pelvic-fin rays simple (unbranched), a scaleless body, no head pores, a wide gill opening extending anteroventrally to below the eye, and hypurals 1 and 2 fused to the complex formed by the fusion of the ural centrum and hypurals 3 and 4.T. nanuss andT. offucius are differentiated on the basis of fin ray counts and colour pattern.T. nanus is the smallest vertebrate yet to be described. Mature females with ovaries full of eggs are 8–10 mm in standard length. 相似文献

In externally fertilizing species, the gametes of both males and females are exposed to the influences of the environment into which they are released. Sperm are sensitive to abiotic factors such as salinity, but they are also affected by biotic factors such as sperm competition. In this study, the authors compared the performance of sperm of three goby species, the painted goby, Pomatoschistus pictus, the two-spotted goby, Pomatoschistus flavescens, and the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus. These species differ in their distributions, with painted goby having the narrowest salinity range and sand goby the widest. Moreover, data from paternity show that the two-spotted goby experiences the least sperm competition, whereas in the sand goby sperm competition is ubiquitous. The authors took sperm samples from dissected males and exposed them to high salinity water (31 PSU) representing the North Sea and low salinity water (6 PSU) representing the brackish Baltic Sea Proper. They then used computer-assisted sperm analysis to measure the proportion of motile sperm and sperm swimming speed 10 min and 20 h after sperm activation. The authors found that sperm performance depended on salinity, but there seemed to be no relationship to the species' geographical distribution in relation to salinity range. The species differed in the proportion of motile sperm, but there was no significant decrease in sperm motility during 20 h. The sand goby was the only species with motile sperm after 72 h. 相似文献

Both natural selection and sexual selection may act on nest-building. We tested experimentally how different regimes of egg-predation and male-male competition influence nest-building before mating, using the marine fish sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus. Males with sneaker males present built the smallest nest-openings, smaller than males held alone or with Pomatoschistus microps males (which may predate eggs and compete over nest-sites but not compete over fertilizations). Males with visual access to other nest-building males tended also to build smaller openings than males held alone or with P. microps. Males with egg-predators present built nests with openings not differing significantly from any other treatment. Our results indicate that the small nest-openings found in the sneaker male treatment are sexually selected through protection against sneaking or by female choice. Across treatments, time span before a male started to build his nest also explained variation in nest-opening width; males starting late built larger nest-openings. 相似文献

Myersina is redefined, based on the presence of an elongate first dorsal fin in at least the adult males, two preopercular pores,
gill membranes fused in the ventral midline and either fused to the isthmus or forming a free fold over it, cycloid scales
only on the body, and midline of predorsal region scaleless. It now includes four species traditionally assigned to Cryptocentrus but here placed in Myersina ("C". crocatus, "C". filifer, "C". pretoriusi, and "C". yangii). This concept of Myersina still retains the species originally assigned to it (M. macrostoma, M. lachneri, and M. nigrivirgata). The recently described M. larsonae belongs in Stonogobiops. These two genera almost definitely form a monophyletic group. However, it is possible that the species of Stonogobiops (the monophyly of which is well supported) could be more closely related to one or more species of Myersina than either is to other Myersina species, because the monophyly of the latter genus remains uncertain.

Gobies of the genus Elacatinus are regarded as the most specialised cleaner fishes in the western tropical Atlantic, yet there are no studies on these cleaners in the southern portion of West Atlantic. We studied the diversity of clients and the daily cleaning activity of the barber goby, Elacatinus figaro, on rocky reefs in southeastern Brazil (23–24°S). A total of 34 fish client species in 16 families were recorded over 484 cleaning events. The most frequent clients were damselfishes, Pomacentridae (37.9% of cleaning events) and grunts, Haemulidae (16.9%). Planktivores were the most frequently attended trophic category, and two species in that category accounted for about a half (44%) of the total cleaning events. Size of clients ranged 4.5–55cm and most individuals were medium-sized (12–30cm); as the barber goby ranged 2–4.5cm, clients were 1.5 to 15 times larger than the cleaner was. Cleaning activity started at dawn and ended shortly before nightfall, the highest frequency of interactions occurring at early morning (nocturnal clients) and mid-afternoon (diurnal clients). By midday the frequency of cleaning events decreased and their duration increased. A total of 109±3 cleaning events and 30±1min of cleaning activity were estimated per cleaning station per day, both figures low when compared to those recorded for cleaner fishes in tropical areas of the western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific. 相似文献

Social conditions and function of inter-group movement of females of the polygynous goby, Trimma okinawae, have been studied at Akamizu Beach, Kagoshima, Japan. Some females moved from their original groups, where the male was
still present, to other groups. Before the movement females sometimes temporarily visited the group into which they subsequently
moved, suggesting they were able to assess social conditions during the visit. By moving, the females increased in size rank
or escaped from similar-sized female competitors in their previous groups. Although the social ranks of the moving females
in their original groups were lower than those of the resident females, the ratio of the number of females that changed sex
to the number of females surviving at the end of the study did not differ for the two types of female. Inter-group movement
of females may increase the probability of their changing sex to become a dominant male. 相似文献
