Aggression between species is a seldom-considered but potentially widespread mechanism of character displacement in secondary sexual characters. Based on previous research showing that similarity in wing coloration directly influences interspecific territorial aggression in Hetaerina damselflies, we predicted that wing coloration would show a pattern of character displacement (divergence in sympatry). A geographical survey of four Hetaerina damselfly species in Mexico and Texas showed evidence for character displacement in both species pairs that regularly occurs sympatrically. Hetaerina titia, a species that typically has large black wing spots and small red wing spots, shifted to having even larger black spots and smaller red wing spots at sites where a congener with large red wing spots is numerically dominant (Hetaerina americana or Hetaerina occisa). Hetaerina americana showed the reverse pattern, shifting towards larger red wing spots where H. titia is numerically dominant. This pattern is consistent with the process of agonistic character displacement, but the ontogenetic basis of the shift remains to be demonstrated.  相似文献

The formation of colonies and the evolution of coloniality have been suggested to be a by-product of the use of public information to select breeding habitats. In this study we performed an experimental test to investigate whether the Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) uses breeding success of conspecifics as a source of public information to select a breeding colony. We considered four potential cues based on reproductive performance of conspecifics in each colony: mean and variance of breeding success measured in both all pairs (TRS, total reproductive success), and only successful pairs (PRS, partial reproductive success). Both mean PRS and mean TRS could be predictive cues of the future reproductive output at a given site, because they varied among colonies and were autocorrelated from one year to the next. To dissociate any relationship between habitat quality and reproductive success we manipulated the mean brood sizes by transferring chicks among ten colonies. In five colonies, all the broods with at least two nestlings were reduced in one chick and in other five colonies all broods were enlarged by one chick. In the following year, we found that the number of adult immigrant kestrels settled at a colony was only explained by mean PRS in the previous year. We also examined the settlement of yearlings, which lack of information on breeding success in previous years. Unlike adult immigrant kestrels, yearlings tended to settle more frequently in those colonies with low mean PRS in the previous year, probably because of the lower pressure for occupation in those colonies. A multiple regression analysis showed that the growth of colonies was positively dependent on the mean PRS in the experimental year, and negatively on the number of predated nests. This study provides a solid support to the hypothesis that colonial species can use mean breeding success of successful pairs as a source of public information to make settlement decisions.  相似文献

Background and Aims Clonal plants can plastically modify their traits in response to competition, but little is known regarding the spatio-temporal scale at which a competitive neighbourhood determines the variability in species traits. This study tests the hypothesis that the local neighbourhood can be expected to influence the processes that are involved in competition tolerance and avoidance, and that this effect depends on organ lifespan.Methods Fragments of the rhizomatous Elytrigia repens (Poaceae) were sampled in 2012 in experimental plant communities that varied in species identity and abundance. These communities had been cultivated since 2009 in mesocosms in a common garden. Fragment performance, shoot and clonal traits were measured, and the effects of past and present local neighbourhoods of five different radius sizes (5–25 cm) were examined. Past and present local neighbourhood compositions were assessed in 2011 and 2012, respectively.Key Results Most of the measured traits of E. repens responded to the local neighbourhood (5–10 cm radius), with an additional effect of the larger neighbourhood (20–25 cm radius) on ramet height, leaf dry matter content, maximal internode length and specific rhizome mass. Contrary to the expectation of the hypothesis, the temporal influence was not due to the organ lifespan. Indeed, five of the eight traits studied responded to both the past and present neighbourhoods. With the exception of specific rhizome mass, all trait responses were explained by the abundance of specific species.Conclusions This study demonstrates that the traits of a single clonal individual can respond to different competitive environments in space and time. The results thus contribute to the understanding of competition mechanisms.  相似文献

Understanding how phenotypic plasticity evolves and in turn affects the course of evolution is a major challenge in modern biology. By definition, biological species are reproductively isolated, but many animals fail to distinguish between conspecifics and closely related heterospecifics. In some cases, phenotypic plasticity may interfere with species recognition. Here, we document a seasonal polyphenism in the degree of dark wing pigmentation in smoky rubyspot damselflies (Hetaerina titia) – a shift so pronounced that it led early researchers to classify different forms of H. titia as separate species. We further show how the seasonal colour shift impacts species recognition with the sympatric congener Hetaerina occisa. Interspecific aggression (territorial fights) and reproductive interference (mating attempts) are much more frequent early in the year, when H. titia more closely resembles H. occisa, compared to later in the year when the dark phase of H. titia predominates. Using wing colour manipulations of tethered damselflies, we show that the seasonal changes in interspecific interactions are caused not only by the seasonal colour shift but also by shifts in discriminatory behaviour in both species. We also experimentally tested and rejected the hypothesis that learning underlies the behavioural shifts in H. occisa. An alternative hypothesis, which remains to be tested, is that the seasonal polyphenism in H. titia wing coloration has resulted in the evolution of a corresponding seasonal polyphenism in species recognition in H. occisa. This study illustrates one of the many possible ways that plasticity in species recognition cues may influence the evolution of interspecific interactions.  相似文献

Conspecific sperm precedence occurs when females are exposed to sperm from males of multiple species, but preferentially use sperm of a conspecific. Conspecific sperm precedence and its mechanisms have been documented widely in terrestrial species, in which complex female behaviors or reproductive tract morphologies can allow many opportunities for female choice and sperm competition, however, the opportunity for conspecific sperm precedence in free spawning marine invertebrates has been largely ignored. Two sea urchin species, Echinometra oblonga and E. sp. C, have high levels of interspecific fertilization in no-choice lab crosses, but no natural hybrids have been found. We performed competitive fertilization assays to test for conspecific sperm precedence and found that eggs of both species showed a marked preference for conspecific sperm when fertilized with heterospecific sperm mixtures. Strong rejection of heterospecific sperm would not have been predicted from no-choice assays and helps explain the lack of natural hybrids. We also found significant variation in hybridization success among crosses. Conspecific sperm precedence in free spawning invertebrates shows that the simple surfaces of eggs and sperm provide ample opportunity for egg choice and sperm competition even in the absence of intricate behavior or complex reproductive morphologies.  相似文献

We present a synthesis of empirical and theoretical work investigating how parasites influence competitive and predatory interactions between other species. We examine the direct and indirect effects of parasitism and discuss examples of density and parasite-induced trait-mediated effects. Recent work reveals previously unrecognized complexity in parasite-mediated interactions. In addition to parasite-modified and apparent competition leading to species exclusion or enabling coexistence, parasites and predators interact in different ways to regulate or destablize the population dynamics of their joint prey. An emerging area is the impact of parasites on intraguild predation (IGP). Parasites can increase vulnerability of infected individuals to cannibalism or predation resulting in reversed species dominance in IGP hierarchies. We discuss the potential significance of parasites for community structure and biodiversity, in particular their role in promoting species exclusion or coexistence and the impact of emerging diseases. Ongoing invasions provide examples where parasites mediate native/invader interactions and play a key role in determining the outcome of invasions. We highlight the need for more quantitative data to assess the impact of parasites on communities, and the combination of theoretical and empirical studies to examine how the effects of parasitism scale up to community-level processes.  相似文献

Recent findings suggest that grouping with conspecifics is part of the behavioural defences developed by amphipod crustaceans to face predation risk by fish. Amphipods commonly serve as intermediate hosts for trophically transmitted parasites. These parasites are known for their ability to alter intermediate host phenotype in a way that promotes predation by definitive hosts, where they reproduce. If aggregation in amphipods dilutes the risk to be preyed on by fish, then it may dilute the probability of transmission for the parasite using fish as definitive hosts. Using experimental infections, we tested whether infection with the fish acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis alters attraction to conspecifics in the amphipod intermediate host Gammarus pulex. We also measured G. pulex's activity and reaction to light to detect potential links between changes in aggregation and changes in other behaviours. The attraction to conspecifics in the presence of predator cue, a behaviour found in uninfected gammarids, was cancelled by the infection, while phototaxis was reversed and activity unchanged. We found no correlation between the three behaviours in infected amphipods, while activity and aggregation were negatively correlated in uninfected individuals after the detection of predation cue. The physiological causes and the adaptive value of aggregation suppression are discussed in the context of a multidimensional manipulation.  相似文献

Dispersing individuals can use conspecifics as indicators of habitat quality and aggregate at traditionally occupied sites, leaving other favourable patches unoccupied. Here we test the predictions of the conspecific-based habitat selection hypothesis on a Spanish great bustard (Otis tarda) metapopulation, currently fragmented due to recent human-induced habitat changes. The number of birds had increased by 23% between 1988 and 1998, but not consistently among leks. Leks that were large in 1988 increased, while those that were small decreased, which suggests that dispersing individuals used the numbers of conspecifics as cues for breeding-site selection. Moreover, leks with high productivity increased, while those with low productivity decreased. Finally, lek distribution was markedly stable throughout the decade, with no establishment of new leks, and suitable habitat patches remained unoccupied, as predicted by the conspecific attraction hypothesis. These results were corroborated by a simulation model which incorporated natal dispersal rates between leks as obtained through radio-tracking of 15 birds that survived throughout their 4-year dispersal period. In conclusion, in spite of the apparent increase in total numbers throughout the decade, both conspecific attraction and local differences in reproductive success contributed to a more aggregated distribution, increasing the species' vulnerability to local catastrophes, and the risks of reduced genetic diversity and extinction of small leks.  相似文献

Honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies rob honey from each other during periods of nectar shortage. Persistent robbing can killweak colonies. Primarily responsible for preventing robbingare guard bees. Previous research has shown that the probabilityof both nest mate and non-nest mate workers being acceptedby guards at the nest entrance increases as nectar availability increases. The mechanism responsible for this change in guardacceptance can be explained by two competing hypotheses: OdorConvergence and Adaptive Threshold Shift. In this study wetested the Odor Convergence hypothesis. The acceptance by guardsat the nest entrance of workers transferred between four coloniesthat had been fed either odorless sucrose syrup (two colonies)or diluted heather honey (Calluna vulgaris) (two colonies)was measured for 3 days before feeding and during 2 weeks offeeding. Despite the large sample sizes, the probability ofguards accepting non-nest mates was not affected by the similaritiesor dissimilarities in food odor between guards' and non-nestmates' colonies. This finding contrasts with the accepted wisdom that food odors are important in nest mate recognition in honeybeesand the data, therefore, strongly reject the Odor Convergencehypothesis.  相似文献
