Contrary to our expectations, soil salinity and moisture explained little of the spatial variation in plant establishment in the upper intertidal marsh of three southern California wetlands, but did explain the timing of germination. Seedlings of 27 species were identified in 1996 and 1997. The seedlings were abundant (maximum densities of 2143/m2 in 1996 and 1819/m2 in 1997) and predominantly annual species. CCAs quantified the spatial variation in seedling density that could be explained by three groups of predictor variables: (1) perennial plant cover, elevation and soil texture (16% of variation), (2) wetland identity (14% of variation) and (3) surface soil salinity and moisture (2% of variation). Increasing the spatial scale of analysis changed the variables that best predicted patterns of species densities. Timing of germination depended on surface soil salinity and, to a lesser extent, soil moisture. Germination occurred after salinity had dropped below a threshold or, in some cases, after moisture had increased above a critical level. Between 32% and 92% of the seedlings were exotic and most of these occurred at lower soil salinity than native species. However, Parapholis incurva and Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum were found in the same environments as the native species. In 1997, the year of a strong El Niño/Southern Oscillation event with high rainfall and sea levels, the elevation distribution of species narrowed and densities of P. incurva and other exotic species decreased but densities of native and rare species did not change. The ‘regeneration niche’ of wetland plant communities includes the effects of multiple abiotic and biotic factors on both the spatial and temporal variations in plant establishment. 相似文献

The relative potencies of the prostaglandins A1, A2, E1, E2, F2α and their 15-keto-, 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-, and 13,14-dihydro-metabolites were investigated on isolated lamb ductus arteriosus preparations contracted by exposure to elevated PO2. All the prostaglandins (except PGF2α and its 15-keto-metabolites) relaxed the tissue. However, only PGE1, E2, and their 13,14-dihydro-metabolites, were effective at concentrations below 10−8 M. Therefore, events that alter metabolism of circulating PGs in the perinatal period may have significant effects on the relative patency or closure of the ductus arteriosus. 相似文献

The relationship between prolactin (PRL) secretion and the neurointermediate lobe (NIL) of the pituitary gland was investigated. Plasma PRL concentrations in rats bearing anterior pituitaries autografted with or without the NIL to the renal capsule were elevated to equal extents at 1 through 6 weeks after surgery (p > 0.10). PRL levels in ovariectomized rats in which the NIL had been removed surgically (NIL-X) or only visualized (NIL-C) were 3–7 ng/ml 4, 7, and 28 days after surgery (p > 0.10); however, they were slightly higher in NIL-X NIL-C rats 14 days after surgery (p < 0.05). Plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations in NIL-C rats increased by 36% from 2 to 4 weeks after surgery (p < 0.05); this increase was not detected in NIL-X rats. PRL and LH surges were induced by estradiol implants in ovariectomized NIL-X and NIL-C rats; the profiles of the PRL surges were superimposable, although the magnitude of the LH surge was only 50% that in NIL-C rats (p < 0.05). These results cast doubt on the importance of the NIL in the regulation of PRL secretion either secreting hypophysiotropic hormones or conducting anterior pituitary hormones directly to the median eminence. The hyaline layer (HL) surrounding the sea urchin blastula appears to dissolve in 1 M glycine. However, after this treatment, there persists over the surfaces of the blastomeres a layer of material, referred to here as the apical lamina (AL), that sloughs off as an adhesive convoluted bag upon gradual dissociation of the embryo. Isolated hyaline layers, referred to as HL-AL complexes, were analyzed by urea-SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A major protein of the HL-AL complex, hyalin, bands or precipitates in the stacking gel. Two other major proteins, both strongly PAS positive, migrate with apparent molecular weights of 175K and 145K daltons. As with intact embryos, the glycine wash removes the hyalin protein from the isolated HL-AL complex, leaving the undissolved AL which consists primarily of the 175K- and 145K-dalton proteins. The embryo's own perivitelline-localized cortical granule peroxidase heavily radioiodinates the proteins of the HL-AL complex, further verifying their apical, extracellular location. Unlike hyalin, the AL proteins do not precipitate with calcium ions. Compared to the entire HL-AL complex, the AL contains a greater percentage of carbohydrate. No sialic acid is associated with the HL-AL complex, but the AL contains some sulfate. In contrast to a published report based on ultrastructural staining, no biochemical evidence was found in this study for the presence of collagen or significant glycosaminoglycan within the HL-AL complex. No developmental differences were observed in AL proteins from 1-hr-old embryos compared to those from blastulae. However, there is evidence suggesting heterogeneity and developmental differences in hyalin. The possible organization of hyalin and the AL proteins into separate layers surrounding the embryo is discussed. The influence of the AL proteins in morphogenesis and cell adhesion is considered, and hypothetical roles attributed to the HL and hyalin are critically questioned. 相似文献

The quantitative composition of the rotifer fauna of seven interconnected lakes located in southern California was studied in a preliminary investigation. The lakes are fed by reclaimed sewage, and the water quality increases rapidly from the first lake, barely able to support life, to a series of lovely lakes stocked with fish and utilized for recreation. The Shannon index of rotifer population diversity showed an appropriate increase. Up to 24 – 28 different rotifer taxa in each lake provided a rich community dominated by Brachionids, Keratella and Trichocerca. The diversity and quantity of the rotifer association then declined again in the last lake. Comparison of the lakes using the Bray and Curtis index of similarity and cluster analysis supported the picture of a lake-chain evolution, a biotic development showing a maximum curve. 相似文献

Previous studies have shown that cells from subjects with trisomy 21 have enhanced sensitivity to the antiviral effects of interferon, presumably because of the location of the gene, IfRec, coding for the species-specific response to interferon on chromosome 21. Interferon is also known to have many other effects including the ability to inhibit the proliferation of many types of cells. To determine whether proliferating trisomic lymphocytes are more sensitive to the antiproliferative effect of interferon we have investigated, using healthy noninstitutionalized subjects with trisomy 21, the ability of interferon to inhibit the proliferation of lymphocytes stimulated with phytohemagglutinin P(PHA), concanavalin A (Con A), and tetanus toxoid. The trisomic subjects had normal numbers of peripheral blood leukocytes, and normal numbers and proportions of T and B lymphocytes. The production of interferon by PHA-stimulated trisomic T lymphocytes was normal. Trisomic lymphocytes also had normal proliferative responses to PHA and Con A. There were no differences between the inhibitory effects of interferon on the proliferation of PHA-stimulated trisomic and normal lymphocytes. However, trisomic lymphocytes stimulated with low doses of Con A did display significantly enhanced sensitivity to the antiproliferative effects of interferon. In contrast to normal lymphocytes, trisomic lymphocytes were not stimulated to proliferate by tetanus toxoid, and exposure to interferon resulted in enhancement, rather than inhibition, of DNA synthesis. 相似文献

The demography and dynamics of migratory bird populations depend on patterns of movement and habitat quality across the annual cycle. We leveraged archival GPS‐tagging data, climate data, remote‐sensed vegetation data, and bird‐banding data to better understand the dynamics of black‐headed grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus) populations in two breeding regions, the coast and Central Valley of California (Coastal California) and the Sierra Nevada mountain range (Sierra Nevada), over 28 years (1992–2019). Drought conditions across the annual cycle and rainfall timing on the molting grounds influenced seasonal habitat characteristics, including vegetation greenness and phenology (maturity dates). We developed a novel integrated population model with population state informed by adult capture data, recruitment rates informed by age‐specific capture data and climate covariates, and survival rates informed by adult capture–mark–recapture data and climate covariates. Population size was relatively variable among years for Coastal California, where numbers of recruits and survivors were positively correlated, and years of population increase were largely driven by recruitment. In the Sierra Nevada, population size was more consistent and showed stronger evidence of population regulation (numbers of recruits and survivors negatively correlated). Neither region showed evidence of long‐term population trend. We found only weak support for most climate–demographic rate relationships. However, recruitment rates for the Coastal California region were higher when rainfall was relatively early on the molting grounds and when wintering grounds were relatively cool and wet. We suggest that our approach of integrating movement, climate, and demographic data within a novel modeling framework can provide a useful method for better understanding the dynamics of broadly distributed migratory species. 相似文献
