The evolutionary response of plant populations to selection for increased defense may be constrained by costs of defense. The purpose of this study was to investigate such constraints on the evolution of defense due to a cost of defense manifested as a trade-off between defense and tolerance. Variation in the response to artificial damage (tolerance) among lines of Brassica rapa that had been artificially selected for foliar glucosinolate content (defense) was examined. Leaf area was removed from replicates of three selection lines (high glucosinolates, control, and low glucosinolates) at three damage levels (0%, 20%, and 60% damage). An external cost of defense would result in a statistically significant selection line by damage treatment interaction, with those selected for high defense expressing less tolerance than those selected for low defense. Damage treatment had a significant overall effect on estimated total fitness, with fitness declining with increasing damage level. Further, selection line also had a significant overall effect on estimated total fitness, with low-defense selection lines having higher fitness compared to both control and high-defense selection lines. More importantly, a cost of defense in terms of tolerance was demonstrated by a significant selection line-by-damage treatment interaction. This interaction was in the direction to demonstrate a genetic trade-off between defense and tolerance, with low-defense selection lines decreasing estimated total fitness in response to damage less than both control and high-defense selection lines. Variation in tolerance among selection lines was due to the greater ability of low-defense lines to maintain fruit and seed production despite the presence of damage. In terms of tolerance, this cost of glucosinolate production in B. rapa could constrain the evolution of increased defense and, in so doing, maintain individuals within the population that are poorly defended yet tolerant.  相似文献

Erythrocytes suspended in a medium of low ionic strength lyse under the effect of an exponential electrical pulse. The percentage of haemolysed cells decreases several-fold in the presence of divalent cations. The protective action of the ions studied increases in the following order: Ca++, Mg++, Zn++. Summary 1. Expression of the apamin-sensitive K+ channel (SK+) in rat skeletal muscle is neurally regulated. The regulatory effect of the nerve over the expression of some muscle ion channels has been attributed to the electrical activity triggered by the nerve and/or to a trophic effect of some molecules transported from the soma to the axonal endings. 2. SK+ channels apparently are involved in myotonic dystrophy (MD), therefore understanding the factors that regulate their expression may ultimately have important clinical relevance. 3. To establish if axoplasmic transport is involved in this process, we used two experimental approaches in adult rats: (a) Both sciatic nerves were severed, leaving a short or a long nerve stump attached to the anterior tibialis (AT). (b) Colchicine or vinblastine (VBL), two axonal transport blockers of different potencies, was applied on one leg to the sciatic nerve. To determine whether electrical activity affects the expression of SK+ channels, denervated AT were directly stimulated. The corresponding contralateral muscles were used as controls. 4. With these experimental conditions we measured (a) apamin binding to muscle membranes, (b) muscle contractile characteristics, and (c) electromyographic activity. 5. In the short- and long-nerve stump experiments, 5 days after denervation125I-apamin binding to AT membranes was 2.0 times higher in the short-stump side. This difference disappeared at longer times. The delayed expression of SK+ channels in the muscle left with a longer nerve stump can be attributed to the extra axoplasm contained in the longer stump, which maintains a normally repressive signal for a longer period of time. Ten to 15 days after application of axonal transport blockers we found that the muscle half-relaxation time increased in the drug-treated side and apamin partially reverted the prolonged relaxation. Myotonic-like discharges specifically blockable by apamin were always present in the drug-treated leg.125I-Apamin binding, which is undetectable in a microsomal preparation from hind leg control muscles, was increased in the drug-treated preparations. Apamin binding to denervated and stimulated AT muscles was lower than in the contralateral unstimulated muscles [3.3±1.0 vs 6.8±0.8 (n=4) fmol/mg protein]. 6. Our results demonstrate that electrical activity and axoplasmic transport are involved in the control of expression of SK+ in rat skeletal muscle. However, the increased expression of this channel induces myotonic-like characteristics that are reversed by apamin. This myotonic activity could be a model for MD.  相似文献

A well-established theoretical relationship exists between genetic correlations between the sexes and the dynamics of response to sex-specific selection. The present study investigates the response to sex-specific selection for two sexually dimorphic traits that have been documented to be genetically variable, calyx diameter and flower number, in Silene latifolia. Following the establishment of a base generation with a known genetic background, selection lines were established and two generations of sex-specific selection were imposed. Calyx diameter responded directly to sex-specific selection, and the positive genetic correlation between the sexes was reflected in correlated responses in the sex that was not the basis for selection within a particular line. Flower number showed a more erratic response to sex-specific selection in that selection in some lines was initially in the wrong direction, that is, selection for a decrease in flower number resulted in an increase. These erratic responses were attributable to genotype-environment interaction as reflected in significant heteroscedasticity in variance among families. Correlated responses to selection in the sex that was not the immediate basis for selection indicated the possible existence of a negative genetic correlation between the sexes for this trait. These results test for the first time the impact of genetic correlations between the sexes on the evolutionary dynamics of sexually dimorphic traits in a plant species.  相似文献

I examine the branch of evolutionary epistemology which tries to account for the character of cognitive mechanisms in animals and humans by extending the biological theory of evolution to the neurophysiological substrates of cognition. Like Plotkin, I construe this branch as a struggling science, and attempt to characterize the sort of theory one might expect to find this truly interdisciplinary endeavor, an endeavor which encompasses not only evolutionary biology, cognitive psychology, and developmental neuroscience, but also and especially, the computational modeling of artificial life programming; I suggest that extending Schaffner's notion of interlevel theories to include both horizontal and vertical levels of abstraction best fits the theories currently being developed in cognitive science. Finally, I support this claim with examples drawn from computational modeling data using the genetic algorithm.  相似文献

The development of the Neotropical predatory pentatomid Brontocoris tabidus on an artificial diet based on beef meat and liver was evaluated. The predator showed significantly longer nymphal development and lower adult weights on this diet than when reared on pupae of the mealworm Tenebrio molitor. The survival of nymphs fed exclusively on the artificial diet was somewhat lower compared with feeding on T. molitor pupae. When B. tabidus was bred on this artificial diet during part of its nymphal period i.e. during the second; second and third; and second, third and fourth instars , and was subsequently returned to T. molitor pupae, the predator nymphs completed the nymphal stage with a developmental rate similar to that of nymphs fed on live prey throughout. The adults attained after switching from the artificial diet to live prey from the third and fourth instar onwards had similar weights to those in the control. Considering the relatively good results obtained with B. tabidus and other members of the pentatomid subfamily Asopinae, this meat-based diet may be a valuable alternative for use in the mass production of predatory pentatomids.  相似文献

With the world-wide increase of patients with renal failure, the development of functional renal replacement therapies have gained significant interest and novel technologies are rapidly evolving. Currently used renal replacement therapies insufficiently remove accumulating waste products, resulting in the uremic syndrome. A more preferred treatment option is kidney transplantation, but the shortage of donor organs and the increasing number of patients waiting for a transplant warrant the development of novel technologies. The bioartificial kidney (BAK) is such promising biotechnological approach to replace essential renal functions together with the active secretion of waste products. The development of the BAK requires a multidisciplinary approach and evolves at the intersection of regenerative medicine and renal replacement therapy. Here we provide a concise review embracing a compact historical overview of bioartificial kidney development and highlighting the current state-of-the-art, including implementation of living-membranes and the relevance of extracellular matrices. We focus further on the choice of relevant renal epithelial cell lines versus the use of stem cells and co-cultures that need to be implemented in a suitable device. Moreover, the future of the BAK in regenerative nephrology is discussed.  相似文献

摘要 目的:探讨经会阴实时三维超声评估生物反馈电刺激联合盆底肌锻炼治疗产后盆底功能障碍的临床疗效。方法:选择2020年9月至2022年9月我院收治的96例产后盆底功能障碍患者,根据随机数字表法将患者分为两组,对照组(48例)采用盆底肌锻炼治疗,研究组(48例)采用生物反馈电刺激联合盆底肌锻炼治疗。治疗前后采用经会阴实时三维超声检查,对比两组治疗前后的盆底功能障碍调查表(PFDI-20)、盆底障碍影响简易问卷7(PFIQ-7)评分、静息和Valsalva动作状态下的肛提肌超声参数。分析肛提肌超声参数与PFDI-20、PFIQ-7评分的相关性。结果:两组治疗后PFDI-20、PFIQ-7评分,静息和Valsalva动作状态下肛提肌裂孔前后径、肛提肌裂孔左右径、肛提肌裂孔面积较治疗前降低(P<0.05),静息时肛提肌厚度较治疗前增加(P<0.05)。研究组治疗后PFDI-20、PFIQ-7评分,静息和Valsalva动作状态下肛提肌裂孔前后径、肛提肌裂孔左右径、肛提肌裂孔面积低于对照组(P<0.05),静息时肛提肌厚度大于对照组(P<0.05)。静息和Valsalva状态下肛提肌裂孔前后径、肛提肌裂孔左右径、肛提肌裂孔面积与PFDI-20、PFIQ-7评分呈正相关(P<0.05),静息状态肛提肌厚度与PFDI-20、PFIQ-7评分呈负相关(P<0.05)。结论:经生物反馈电刺激联合盆底肌锻炼治疗后肛提肌裂孔大小较治疗前降低,肛提肌厚度较治疗前增加,且与PFDI-20、PFIQ-7评分改善有关,经会阴实时三维超声可客观、有效评价产后盆底功能障碍患者的治疗效果。  相似文献

摘要 目的:探讨经皮穴位电刺激联合常规镇痛对无痛人流术后宫缩痛镇痛效果及机制。方法:选择来我院行无痛人流患者100例。根据随机数字表法分为两组。对照组行术后常规镇痛治疗,同时在内关、合谷、三阴交最酸胀处黏贴电极但是不进行穴位刺激。观察组在术后常规镇痛基础上行经皮穴位电刺激治疗。对比不同时间点两组患者的机体一般情况、不同时间点两组患者的宫缩痛疼痛情况、T3时正性负性情绪量表评分、T3时血清P物质、前列腺素、5-羟色胺、β-内啡肽、强啡肽水平、T4点时的心理状态评分及满意度评分。结果:对照组T1、T2点时的BP、HR、RR、SpO2明显较同组T0点低,对照组T3点与观察组T1、T2、T3点时BP、HR、RR、SpO2与同组T0点对比无统计学意义(P>0.05);对照组T1、T2点时的BP、HR、RR、SpO2明显较观察组同时间点低(P<0.05)。T0点,两组VAS评分对比无统计学意义(P>0.05);T1、T2、T3点时间,观察组的VAS评分明显较对照组低(P<0.05);对照组T1、T2点的VAS评分明显较同组T0点高,观察组T1、T2、T3点的VAS评分明显较T0点低(P<0.05)。观察组的正性情绪明显较对照组高,负性情绪明显较对照组低(P<0.05)。观察组的血清P物质、前列腺素、5-羟色胺、β-内啡肽、强啡肽水平明显较对照组低(P<0.05)。观察组的心理状态评分明显较对照组低,满意度评分明显较对照组高(P<0.05)。结论:经皮穴位电刺激联合常规镇痛可明显改善无痛人流术后宫缩痛镇痛效果、患者心理状态及满意度,可能与其可降低血清P物质、前列腺素、5-羟色胺、β-内啡肽、强啡肽水平有关。  相似文献
