Birth seasonally at high latitudes is a complex phenomenon which is undoubtedly affected by a subtle interaction between environmental rhythmicity (most notably in photoperiod and temperature) and cultural adaption. There is intriguing evidence that human gonadotrophic activity (and hence fertility) may be affected by seasonal fluctuations in light intensity and duration. Nevertheless, cultural factors are important insofar as they mediate between environmental rhythmicity and human fertility/birth patterns. This article examines the distribution of births over several decades in an Inuit community located 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Several shifts in birth seasonality are noted, the most significant of which is a dramatic shift from pronounced seasonality in the 1970s to non-seasonality in the 1980s. Longitudinal ethnographic fieldwork has allowed an examination of social and economic changes accounting for the rather sudden disappearance of birth seasonality. These include increasing reliance upon wage employment and social assistance, decreased dependence upon subsistence hunting and trapping, changing attitudes on the part of young people entering their prime reproductive years, and the introduction of television, radio, and southern-style recreational activities.  相似文献

Close inspection of surface bone in skulls of Neanderthal man reveals weathering cracks extensive enough in one specimen, La Chapelle-aux-Saints, to allow preliminary analysis of major patterns of orientation and to make inferences about functional relationships of structures. The fine structure of the bone of the brow ridges is very different from the rest of the skull in the two adults examined, having a peculiar vermiculate surface pattern. Weathering cracks do not appear in this region. This indicates that Neanderthal brow ridges are not closely related to normal mechanical forces such as chewing exertion. It may, however, give further support to theories of Neanderthal brow ridges as protection for the eyes. The localized structure of bone often differs from region to region, and offers new possibilities for the analysis of both contemporary and fossil forms.  相似文献

Synopsis The architecture of the gill structure of variousTilapia species was studied in relation to their adaptability to hypersaline media. Using SEM and EM, it was shown that the squamose epithelial cells of the gills have species-typical patterns of ridges on their outer surfaces. These have previously been misinterpreted by other authors as microvilli or stereocillia. The ridges are more dense and better developed in euryhaline species, likeT. zillii, and less so in stenohaline species likeSarotherodon niloticus. Comparing freshwater and seawater-adapted individuals ofT. zillii, S. niloticus, S. galflaeus, andTristramella sacra, it was shown that in fresh water the surface cells are slightly swollen, extending over the openings of the chloride cells. During adaptation to sea water, these ridges become higher and denser and the cell surface shrinks, exposing the underlying orifices of the apical crypts of the chloride cells. The more euryhaline the species, the less change there is in the ridge pattern of the cells during passage from fresh to sea water. This evidence implicates the gill epithelium, together with the chloride cells, in the process of osmoregulation.  相似文献

1. Global change models predict the greatest impact in climate to occur in the northern polar region. Change in temperature will alter individual metabolism and has the potential to change community structure to an unknown degree.
2. The temperature-dependent energy budget of Arctic Daphnia middendorffiana was investigated by measuring respiration rates, ingestion rates and assimilation rates. The scope for growth and reproduction was determined and compared with data from the literature for a clone of Daphnia pulicaria collected in the temperate zone.
3. A difference was observed between the Arctic species and the temperate zone clone in both temperature tolerance, and the energy available for growth and reproduction at various temperatures. A low availability of energy for growth and reproduction indicated that life history patterns as well as physiological mechanisms are important in allowing D. middendorffiana to exist successfully in Arctic environments.
4. The lower available energy for growth compared to Daphnia clones from temperate zones may be detrimental to D. middendorffiana , which might have to compete with species expanding their range under the predicted temperature increase for Arctic regions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Defining the at‐sea foraging movements of seabirds is fundamental to understanding their ecology and can also be important in assessing the potential impact of marine developments such as offshore wind farms (OWFs). Surveys of predefined areas using aerial or boat‐based transect surveys may not allow adequate assessment of the relative importance of different areas to birds. Individual‐based satellite or radio‐telemetry can be effective in identifying foraging ranges and preferred areas, but may not be suitable for some species. We developed a method to determine the foraging movements of breeding terns (Sterna spp.) by visually tracking individuals using a rigid‐hulled inflatable boat (RHIB). Sandwich Terns (S. sandvicensis), Common Terns (S. hirundo), and Arctic Terns (S. paradisaea) were tracked from colonies in Norfolk and Anglesey, United Kingdom, from 2006 to 2008. The proportion of complete (from and to colony) trips varied from 29–60% among species, years, and colonies. Individual Sandwich Terns were tracked for periods up to 126 min over distances up to 72 km and as far as 54 km from the breeding colony, further than Arctic (up to 57 km and 29 km from the colony) and Common (to 29 km and <9 km from the colony) terns. Mean values were much smaller. Multivariate modeling of Sandwich Tern foraging trips indicated that flight speeds >50 km/hr coupled with greater distances from shore (>25 km) significantly reduced the likelihood of tracking a bird for an entire foraging trip. Use of different boats that differ in speed and performance may alleviate such issues. Visual tracking allowed us to collect data on foraging behavior, flight height, and prey capture rates, and also permitted comparisons between species. Our results indicate that visual tracking may be an effective means of determining the foraging movements and at‐sea behavior of a variety of short‐ranging, day‐active seabirds.  相似文献

The advancement of spring and the differential ability of organisms to respond to changes in plant phenology may lead to “phenological mismatches” as a result of climate change. One potential for considerable mismatch is between migratory birds and food availability in northern breeding ranges, and these mismatches may have consequences for ecosystem function. We conducted a three‐year experiment to examine the consequences for CO2 exchange of advanced spring green‐up and altered timing of grazing by migratory Pacific black brant in a coastal wetland in western Alaska. Experimental treatments represent the variation in green‐up and timing of peak grazing intensity that currently exists in the system. Delayed grazing resulted in greater net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and gross primary productivity (GPP), while early grazing reduced CO2 uptake with the potential of causing net ecosystem carbon (C) loss in late spring and early summer. Conversely, advancing the growing season only influenced ecosystem respiration (ER), resulting in a small increase in ER with no concomitant impact on GPP or NEE. The experimental treatment that represents the most likely future, with green‐up advancing more rapidly than arrival of migratory geese, results in NEE changing by 1.2 µmol m?2 s?1 toward a greater CO2 sink in spring and summer. Increased sink strength, however, may be mitigated by early arrival of migratory geese, which would reduce CO2 uptake. Importantly, while the direct effect of climate warming on phenology of green‐up has a minimal influence on NEE, the indirect effect of climate warming manifest through changes in the timing of peak grazing can have a significant impact on C balance in northern coastal wetlands. Furthermore, processes influencing the timing of goose migration in the winter range can significantly influence ecosystem function in summer habitats.  相似文献

We report that a long-distance migrating shorebird, the red knot, makes a complete switch from commonly occurring monoester preen waxes to a much rarer class of higher-molecular-weight diester waxes at the time of take-off to the high arctic breeding grounds. The cold arctic climate would have required a lowering of wax-viscosity, and thus, a shift in the reverse direction. We propose that a sexually selected need for a brilliant plumage has lead to this conter-intuitive temporary shift from monoesters to diester waxes. The difficulty of application of the diester preen waxes under cold conditions would ensure the reliability of the quality-signalling function of this most probably sexually selected trait.  相似文献

Submerged macrophytes may play an important role as a refuge for zooplankton against predators. However, a recent study suggests that their importance depends on the trophic state of the lake. We studied the impact of fish and macrophytes on the horizontal distribution of pelagic cladocerans in 56 oligotrophic arctic Greenland lakes. In north-east and western Greenland, zooplankton was sampled in the near-shore (littoral) and central (pelagial) part of all lakes and fish were sampled with multiple mesh-sized gill nets. Macrophytes were visually estimated in the littoral. In north-east Greenland, 5 taxa of cladocerans were found, while 14 taxa were recorded in western Greenland. Daphnia pulex occurred only in fishless lakes in both northeast and western Greenland and avoided the near-shore areas in the shallow and deep lakes. Bosmina spp. and Holopedium gibberum were evenly distributed between the littoral and the pelagial in the deep and shallow fishless lakes. However, their near-shore density was lowest in the presence of fish. Macrophyte-related and benthic cladocerans concentrated either in the littoral or were evenly distributed between the littoral and the pelagial, irrespective of depth and fish presence or absence. Macrophytes had no impact on the horizontal distribution of pelagic cladocerans. Thus, it is concluded that horizontal heterogeneity of Bosmina spp. and Holopedium gibberum might be affected by the presence of fish.  相似文献
