Antennae of representatives of most genera and subgenera of Nepticulidae have been examined in detail with SEM. Flagellar segments are highly uniform and possess each 1–3 s. trichodea, 1–3 long s. chaetica type I, 12 short s. chaetica type II and 0–2 s. coeloconica of a simpified type without “picket fence”. The dominating structure is a pair of s. vesiculoclada, a unique sensillum type, believed to be a synapomorphy for the Nepticulidae. A pair is present on alt flagellomeres in male antennae but not on all flagellomeres of females in two subgenera of Ectoedemia. Principally each s. vesiculocladum is five-branched, with the branches joined tightly to the flagellar cuticle, but reduction of the branches occurs in several genera, in particular in Ectoedemia. This sensillum can be classified as a single-walled wp sensillum, and thus a chemoreceptor. The s. vesiculocladum is considered to be a homologue of the ascoid sensilla in the Opostegidae. The presence of these special setae is considered as an additional synapomorphy for both families. A review of previous Literature on lepidopteran sensilla is presented and the present data are compared and discussed. In the Nepticulidae the s. vesiculocladum is assumed to be the major pheromone detector in contrast to the s. trichodea of most other Lepidoptera.  相似文献

Summary We have used a cytochemical technique to investigate the distribution of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the antenna of the sphinx moth Manduca sexta. High levels of echothiophate-insensitive (presumably intracellular) AChE activity were found in six different types of antennal receptors localized in specific regions of the three antennal segments of the adult moth. Mechanosensory organs in the scape and pedicel, the Böhm bristles and Johnston's organ, are innervated by AChE-positive neurons. In each annulus of the antennal flagellum, AChE-positive neurons are associated with six sensilla chaetica and a peg organ, probably a sensillum styloconicum. At least 112 receptor neurons (8–10 per annulus) innervating the intersegmental membranes between the 14 distalmost annuli also exhibit high levels of echothiophate-resistant AChE. In addition, each annulus has more than 30 AChE-positive somata in the epidermis of the scale-covered (back) side of the flagellum, and 4 AChE-positive somata reside within the first annulus of the flagellum. Since none of the olfactory receptor neurons show a high level of echothiophateresistant AChE activity, and all known mechanoreceptors are AChE-positive, apparently intracellular AChE activity in the antenna correlates well with mechanosensory functions and is consistent with the idea that these cells employ acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter.  相似文献

Summary In the moth Manduca sexta, the number and morphology of neuronal connections between the antennal lobes and the protocerebrum were examined. Cobalt injections revealed eight morphological types of neurons with somata adjacent to the AL neuropil that project in the inner, middle, and outer antenno-cerebral tracts to the protocerebrum. Neurons innervating the macroglomerular complex and many neurons with fibers in the inner antennocerebral tract have uniglomerular antennal-lobe arborizations. Most neurons in the middle and outer antenno-cerebral tracts, on the other hand, seem to innervate more than one glomerulus. Protocerebral areas receiving direct input from the antennal lobe include the calyces of the mushroom bodies, and circumscribed areas termed olfactory foci in the lateral horn of the protocerebrum and several other regions, especially areas in close proximity to the mushroom bodies. Fibers in the inner antenno-cerebral tract that innervate the male-specific macroglomerular complex have arborizations in the protocerebrum that are distinct from the projections of sexually non-specific neurons. Protocerebral neurons projecting into the antennal lobe are much less numerous than antennal-lobe output cells. Most of these protocerebral fibers enter the antennal lobe in small fiber tracts that are different from those described above. In the protocerebrum, these centrifugal cells arborize in olfactory foci and also in the inferior median protocerebrum and the lateral accessory lobes. The morphological diversity of connections between the antennal lobes and the protocerebrum, described here for the first time on a single-cell level, suggests a much greater physiological complexity of the olfactory system than has been assumed so far.  相似文献

Summary The topography of the antennal afferent path-ways was studied comparatively in the worker bee and the drone of Apis mellifera L. by cellular marking, following localized application of cobalt chloride to the cut end of one antenna. This study dealt principally with the first relay of the afferent pathway in the glomeruli of the antennal lobe. The counting and measurement of all the glomeruli were performed on 5 worker bees and 5 drones. An important sexual dimorphism, represented by 4 large and easily identifiable glomerular complexes, was demonstrated in the drone. In both worker bee and drone, four main regions of the glomerular neuropil were distinguished according to corresponding afferent bundles. The worker possessed 166 glomeruli and the drone 103. The number, position and dimensions of the glomeruli indicated that the glomerular organization was unvarying in worker bees and in drones. Concerning the internal structure of the glomeruli, two types were distinguished: the great majority (95%) exhibited a cortical layer, whereas in the 7 posterior glomeruli the synaptic fields of association seemed to be scattered throughout the whole volume. The main results of this work (glomerular invariance, sexual dimorphism) support the hypothesis of the functional unit of the glomeruli.Unité de Recherche Associée au CNRS, UA 483  相似文献

Intracellular recordings were made from the major neurites of local interneurons in the moth antennal lobe. Antennal nerve stimulation evoked 3 patterns of postsynaptic activity: (i) a short-latency compound excitatory postsynaptic potential that, based on electrical stimulation of the antennal nerve and stimulation of the antenna with odors, represents a monosynaptic input from olfactory afferent axons (71 out of 86 neurons), (ii) a delayed activation of firing in response to both electrical- and odor-driven input (11 neurons), and (iii) a delayed membrane hyperpolarization in response to antennal nerve input (4 neurons).Simultaneous intracellular recordings from a local interneuron with short-latency responses and a projection (output) neuron revealed unidirectional synaptic interactions between these two cell types. In 20% of the 30 pairs studied, spontaneous and current-induced spiking activity in a local interneuron correlated with hyperpolarization and suppression of firing in a projection neuron. No evidence for recurrent or feedback inhibition of projection neurons was found. Furthermore, suppression of firing in an inhibitory local interneuron led to an increase in firing in the normally quiescent projection neuron, suggesting that a disinhibitory pathway may mediate excitation in projection neurons. This is the first direct evidence of an inhibitory role for local interneurons in olfactory information processing in insects. Through different types of multisynaptic interactions with projection neurons, local interneurons help to generate and shape the output from olfactory glomeruli in the antennal lobe.Abbreviations AL antennal lobe - EPSP excitatory postsynaptic potential - GABA -aminobutyric acid - IPSP inhibitory postsynaptic potential - LN local interneuron - MGC macroglomerular complex - OB olfactory bulb - PN projection neuron - TES N-tris[hydroxymethyl]methyl-2-aminoethane-sulfonic acid  相似文献

The morphology of the antennal hair-sensilla of Periplaneta americana, their distribution and frequency on the antennal flagellum have been examined by transmission- and scanning-electron microscopy. The types of sensilla were distinguished with respect to physiologically relevant criteria such as wall structure and number of sensory cells. Among the sensilla of the antenna of the adult male, long, single-walled sensilla with four sensory cells (types sw B), Probably responsible for reception of sexual pheromones, are most frequent, representing about 54% of the antennal sensilla. About half of these sensilla are newly-formed at the imaginal ecdysis; the other half are derived from the shorter type sw B sensilla of the nymphal antenna. Short type sw B sensilla are present in all larval stages of both sexes and in adult females as well. During the imaginal ecdysis of males, however, the length of these sensilla increases to double that found in nymphs. Dendritic branches also increase in number. During postembryonic development, the number of sensory fibers in the antennal flagellum increases nearly 20-fold, from 14,000 in the first larval instar to about 270,000 in the adult male. The greatest increase, approximately 90%, occurs during the last developmental stage.  相似文献

Summary The postembryonic development of the antennal lobes of Periplaneta americana L. was examined with light- and electron-microscopical methods. There is no difference in the number of glomeruli and neurons in the antennal lobes of larval and adult animals. At hatching, the first larva already possesses the adult number of approximately 125 glomeruli and 500 to 560 deutocerebral neurons in the dorsolateral cell group of each antennal lobe. During postembryonic development the volume of the deutocerebral neurons increases three- to fourfold. The glomeruli of the first larva have about 7 % of the volume of the corresponding adult glomeruli. Since number, pattern, and size ratio of glomeruli (with the exception of the macroglomerulus) are constant in all larval stages and adult animals, it is possible to identify individual glomeruli. During the whole postembryonic development the ordinary glomeruli show a continuous volume increase, which parallels the increase in antennal sensory input. The macroglomerulus develops by way of special growth of two to four neuropil units, but not before the last three to four larval stages and only in males. Its growth precedes the formation of antennal pheromone receptors during the final molt; these receptors are known to project into the macroglomerulus. The development of the macroglomerulus in the last larval stages of the male may be caused by a genetically fixed growth program of specific deutocerebral neurons.Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Scha 291/1)  相似文献

In insects, the primary sites of integration for olfactory sensory input are the glomeruli in the antennal lobes. Here, axons of olfactory receptor neurons synapse with dendrites of the projection neurons that relay olfactory input to higher brain centers, such as the mushroom bodies and lateral horn. Interactions between olfactory receptor neurons and projection neurons are modulated by excitatory and inhibitory input from a group of local interneurons. While significant insight has been gleaned into the differentiation of olfactory receptor and projection neurons, much less is known about the development and function of the local interneurons. We have found that Dichaete, a conserved Sox HMG box gene, is strongly expressed in a cluster of LAAL cells located adjacent to each antennal lobe in the adult brain. Within these clusters, Dichaete protein expression is detected in both cholinergic and GABAergic local interneurons. In contrast, Dichaete expression is not detected in mature or developing projection neurons, or developing olfactory receptor neurons. Analysis of novel viable Dichaete mutant alleles revealed misrouting of specific projection neuron dendrites and axons, and alterations in glomeruli organization. These results suggest noncell autonomous functions of Dichaete in projection neuron differentiation as well as a potential role for Dichaete‐expressing local interneurons in development of the adult olfactory circuitry. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Normative data on the in vivo size of the human brain and its major anatomically defined subdivisions are not readily available. In this study, high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging was used to measure regional brain volumes in 46 normal, right-handed adults (23 men, 23 women) between the ages of 22-49 years. Parcellation of the brain was based on neuroanatomical landmarks. The following brain regions were measured: the cerebral hemispheres, frontal lobe, temporal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, cingulate gyrus, insula, cerebellum, corpus callosum, and lateral ventricles. Males tend to be significantly larger than females, for the whole brain and for nearly all of its major subdivisions, including the corpus callosum. However, the proportional sizes of regions relative to total volume of the hemisphere are remarkably similar in males and females. Variation in size of region is always greater than variation in proportional representation. Asymmetries in brain regions are not profound, with the exception of the cingulate gyrus, which is larger in the left hemisphere. Brain regions are highly correlated in size, with the exception of the lateral ventricles. After controlling for hemisphere size, the volumes of the frontal and parietal lobes are significantly negatively correlated. The occipital lobe tends to be less sexually dimorphic than other major lobes, and less correlated with other brain regions for volume. These results have implications for understanding whether or not certain sectors of the brain have shown relative expansion over the course of hominid and hominoid evolution.  相似文献

Abstract.  Certain types of antennal sensilla are known to be more abundant in solitarious individuals than in gregarious ones in the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria . We tested the hypothesis that injection of a neurohormone, [His7]-corazonin, into isolated-reared nymphs of this species mimics the effect of crowding on the frequencies of various types of antennal sensilla. One nmol of the hormone was injected into nymphs on two occasions, on the third days of the second and third stadia, respectively. Upon adult emergence, the numbers of different types of sensilla on the eighth antennal segment were compared with those of oil-injected controls. [His7]-corazonin did not influence the numbers of basiconic sensilla type A, basiconic sensilla type B and trichoid sensilla significantly compared to oil-injected controls. However, the number of coeloconic sensilla was reduced significantly by the hormone injections. Because the length of the antennal segment was not affected by the hormone injection, it appears that the hormone influenced the development of coeloconic sensilla. The results support the hypothesis tested and are consistent with the idea that [His7]-corazonin plays an important role in the control of phase polymorphism in L. migratoria .  相似文献
