The chondrocranium of the suckermouth armored catfish Ancistrus cf. triradiatus was studied. Its development is described based on specimens ranging from small prehatching stages with no cartilage visible, to larger posthatching stages where the chondrocranium is reducing. Cleared and stained specimens, as well as serial sections, revealed a cartilaginous skeleton with many features common for Siluriformes, yet several aspects of A. cf. triradiatus are not seen as such in other catfishes, or to a lesser extent. The skull is platybasic, but the acrochordal cartilage is very small and variably present, leaving the notochord protruding into the hypophyseal fenestra in the earlier stages. The ethmoid region is slender, with a rudimentary solum nasi. A lateral commissure and myodomes are present. The larger posterior myodome is roofed by a prootic bridge. The maxillary barbel is supported by a conspicuous cartilaginous rod from early prehatching stages. The ceratohyal has four prominent lateral processes. Infrapharyngobranchials I-II do not develop. During ontogeny, the skull lengthens, with an elongated ethmoid, pointing ventrally, and a long and bar-shaped hyosymplectic-pterygoquadrate plate. The neotropical loricarioid catfishes include six families, the most species‐rich of which are the Callichthyidae and the Loricariidae. Loricariidae (suckermouth armoured catfishes) have a highly specialized head morphology, including an exceptionally large number of muscles derived from the adductor mandibulae complex and the adductor arcus palatini. Terminology of these muscles varies among the literature, and no data exist on their ontogenetic origin. A detailed examination of the ontogeny of both a callichthyid and a loricariid representative now reveals the identity of the jaw and maxillary barbel musculature, and supports new hypotheses concerning homologies. The adductor mandibulae muscle itself is homologous to the A1‐OST and A3′ of basal catfishes, and the A3′ has given rise to the newly evolved loricariid retractor veli as well. The A2 and A3″ have resulted in the retractor tentaculi of Callichthyidae and the retractor premaxillae of Loricariidae. Thus, these two muscles are shown to be homologous. In Loricariidae, the extensor tentaculi consists of two separate muscles inserting on the autopalatine, and evidence is given on the evolutionary origin of the loricariid levator tentaculi (previously and erroneously known as retractor tentaculi) from the extensor tentaculi, and not the adductor mandibulae complex. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155 , 76–96.  相似文献

A re‐evaluation of Dekeyseria brachyura and D. pulchra found them to be junior synonyms of D. picta, the oldest species among these congeners, based on continuous intraspecific variation in morphometrics and colour pattern. Examination of material deposited at Brazilian and Venezuelan collections, including the original type specimens of Ancistrus brachyurus and A. pictus, plus samples recently collected in the Rio Negro, Amazonas, Brazil, allowed re‐evaluation of the taxonomic status of D. picta and provides additional information on its distribution, habitats and reproductive strategies.  相似文献

Body shape of four distinct populations of Ancistrus cryptophthalmus from different caves in the São Domingos karst area and the local epigean (surface) Ancistrus species were compared using geometric morphometrics. Angélica and Bezerra catfishes were closer to each other and successively to the studied sample of epigean catfishes than to Passa Três and São Vicente I catfishes. Greater similarity between catfishes from the Angélica‐Bezerra cave system to epigean catfishes than to other cave catfishes may represent a plesiomorphic feature. On the other hand, the present analyses allowed the distinction between Passa Três and São Vicente I catfishes, which inhabited the same cave system. Topographic isolation due to the presence of several waterfalls interposed between the stream reaches where these catfishes live may explain such morphological differentiation. Also, the presence of a waterfall downstream of the reach where the Angélica sample was obtained may have contributed to the partial isolation of these catfishes from those living in Bezerra Cave. Differences in population sizes probably influenced the degrees of morphological differentiation observed among the cave populations. The mosaic distribution of character states indicated that the four populations of A. cryptophthalmus have evolved rather independently, but the continuous variation suggests a recent connection between these populations, perhaps with a limited gene flow. Considering other features such as reduction of eyes and pigmentation, and changes in body shape, a separate species status for the epigean and hypogean Ancistrus species from the São Domingos karst area has been maintained.  相似文献

Synopsis Interspecific differences in blood hemoglobin concentration ([Hb]) occur among air breathing fishes. However, the effect on [Hb] of factors such as air-breathing organ structure and blood circulation pattern, air breathing behavior, as well as season and environmental conditions have not been fully examined. [Hb] in seven Panamanian species of air-breathing freshwater teleost fishes were compared and were monitored for most species during the wet and dry seasons and in hypoxic laboratory conditions. Fishes studied were Ancistrus, Hypostomus, and Loricaria (Family Loricariidae); Hoplosternum (Callichthyidae); Synbranchus (Synbranchidae); Piabucina (Lebiasinidae); and Dormitator (Eleotridae). [Hb] in these species ranged from 4.8 to 14.6 g 100 ml–1 (g%). Ancistrus, Hypostomus, and Dormitator significantly increased [Hb] during the dry season and, with Piabucina, also increased [Hb] when acclimated to hypoxia in the laboratory. An increase in [Hb] during the dry season may precondition facultative air breathers for habitat hypoxia (and the need to respire aerially) in the event this occurs. Intraspecific differences in both [Hb] and in red cell Hb-phosphate ratio, an index of oxygen affinity, were found in populations of Hypostomus and relate directly to differences in habitat oxygen level. In all species tested alterations in blood hematocrit (Hmct) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) occurred only with correspondingly large net changes in blood [Hb]. The [Hb] of Loricaria, Synbranchus, and Hoplosternum was not affected by season or hypoxia and this may be due to behavioral and physiological adaptations that reduce the transbranchial loss of aerially-obtained oxygen or to a ventilatory mode that precludes this possibility.  相似文献
