Effect of Cuticle Treatments on Infection of Phaseolus vulgaris by Rhizoctonia solani

Rhizoctonia solani, the causal agent of stem canker of beans, does not commonly infect beans more than two weeks old. Treatment of the cuticular layer by abrasion or chloroform rinsing results in decreased cuticular autofluorescence and the ability of stains to penetrate the hypocotyl surface. Infection cushions preferentially formed near these treated areas on both young and old plants. The morphology of infection cushions on older plants is simpler than those found on young, susceptible plants, but they are fully competent to form lesions.     

Feeding trials ofAphelenchus avenae on soil bacteria and actinomycetes

Summary Aphelenchus avenae and various unidentified bacteria and actinomycetes were cultured from soil samples taken from a pine-forest and a wheat-field. The nematode failed to reproduce in significant numbers on cultures of these micro-organisms and was apparently unable to utilize them as food sources.     

Lipid changes during development of Blastocladiella emersonii

The lipid composition of swimming spores, cysts and five hour germlings was established. Spores utilized triglycerides first, then phospholipids. Upon encystment all glycolipid components decreased, while in germlings the phospholipids, monoglycerides and sterol esters exhibited a marked increase.     

Carbon cycling in a loblolly pine plantation

Summary The carbon cycle of a loblolly pine plantation in North Carolina was examined during its 12th through 16th years from planting. Net primary production during the study period averaged 2056 g C m^-2 year^-1. With autotrophic respiration equal to 2068 g C, the calculated gross production was 4124 g C m^-2 year^-1. Heterotrophic respiration of 694 g C m^-2 year^-1 resulted in net ecosystem production of 1362 g C m^-2 year^-1. In carbon cycle comparisons between forest ecosystems, autotrophic respiration rates were found to be closely coupled to regional temperature.
