Tuber brumale (winter truffle) is one of the most controversial true truffles, not only in regard to its ecological and economical role but also its taxonomy. Multilocus phylogenetic analyses have revealed that specimens identified earlier as T. brumale belong to two species. These species were deemed cryptic right away, because preliminary morphological measurements did not show any phenotypical differences. In this study, we measured the morphology of 119 T. brumale agg. specimens, identified by DNA-based phylogenetic tools. We found several continuous morphological characters which show strong statistical differences between the two species, albeit not without overlap. Using a combination of these characters, we show that efficient separation of the two species is possible. We describe T. cryptobrumale sp. nov. and present the environmental demands and the potential area reconstruction of both species. We argue that non-representative sampling is a major culprit in most failures to detect both the existence of morphologically similar species and their morphological differences. Our findings illustrate the benefits of integrative taxonomy: the use of a combination of molecular, morphological and ecological tools. 相似文献

A long-living (of up to several years) bipartite system was constructed between the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and the ascomycetous fungus Alternaria infectoria. The metabolic cooperation between the two organisms was tested with infecting A. infectoria hyphae into nitrogen starving yellow C. reinhardtii culture. After the infection, a slow greening process of the algal cells was observed, which was studied by measuring the increasing chlorophyll content, the appearance of chlorophyll-protein complexes – using 77 K fluorescence spectroscopy, and the measurement of photosynthetic oxygen production. Transmission electron microscopy and laser scanning microscopy images showed that no direct physical contacts were formed between the algal cells and the hyphae in the long-living symbiosis but they were joint in a mucilaginous bed allowing diffusion processes for metabolic cooperation. The increased free amino acid content of the medium of the long-living bipartite cultures’ indicated possible nitrogen supply of hyphal origin, which allowed the re-greening of the algal cells. The results of this work underline the importance of symbiosis-like stable metabolic coexistence, which ensures survival under extreme environmental conditions. 相似文献

Principal response curves analysis (PRC) is widely applied to experimental multivariate longitudinal data for the study of time-dependent treatment effects on the multiple outcomes or response variables (RVs). Often, not all of the RVs included in such a study are affected by the treatment and RV-selection can be used to identify those RVs and so give a better estimate of the principal response. We propose four backward selection approaches, based on permutation testing, that differ in whether coefficient size is used or not in ranking the RVs. These methods are expected to give a more robust result than the use of a straightforward cut-off value for coefficient size. Performance of all methods is demonstrated in a simulation study using realistic data. The permutation testing approach that uses information on coefficient size of RVs speeds up the algorithm without affecting its performance. This most successful permutation testing approach removes roughly 95 % of the RVs that are unaffected by the treatment irrespective of the characteristics of the data set and, in the simulations, correctly identifies up to 97 % of RVs affected by the treatment. 相似文献

Amazon forests are fire-sensitive ecosystems and consequently fires affect forest structure and composition. For instance, the legacy of past fire regimes may persist through some species and traits that are found due to past fires. In this study, we tested for relationships between functional traits that are classically presented as the main components of plant ecological strategies and environmental filters related to climate and historical fires among permanent mature forest plots across the range of local and regional environmental gradients that occur in Amazonia. We used percentage surface soil pyrogenic carbon (PyC), a recalcitrant form of carbon that can persist for millennia in soils, as a novel indicator of historical fire in old-growth forests. Five out of the nine functional traits evaluated across all 378 species were correlated with some environmental variables. Although there is more PyC in Amazonian soils than previously reported, the percentage soil PyC indicated no detectable legacy effect of past fires on contemporary functional composition. More species with dry diaspores were found in drier and hotter environments. We also found higher wood density in trees from higher temperature sites. If Amazon forest past burnings were local and without distinguishable attributes of a widespread fire regime, then impacts on biodiversity would have been small and heterogeneous. Alternatively, sufficient time may have passed since the last fire to allow for species replacement. Regardless, as we failed to detect any impact of past fire on present forest functional composition, if our plots are representative then it suggests that mature Amazon forests lack a compositional legacy of past fire. 相似文献

With many sophisticated methods available for estimating migration, ecologists face the difficult decision of choosing for their specific line of work. Here we test and compare several methods, performing sanity and robustness tests, applying to large‐scale data and discussing the results and interpretation. Five methods were selected to compare for their ability to estimate migration from spatially implicit and semi‐explicit simulations based on three large‐scale field datasets from South America (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Ecuador). Space was incorporated semi‐explicitly by a discrete probability mass function for local recruitment, migration from adjacent plots or from a metacommunity. Most methods were able to accurately estimate migration from spatially implicit simulations. For spatially semi‐explicit simulations, estimation was shown to be the additive effect of migration from adjacent plots and the metacommunity. It was only accurate when migration from the metacommunity outweighed that of adjacent plots, discrimination, however, proved to be impossible. We show that migration should be considered more an approximation of the resemblance between communities and the summed regional species pool. Application of migration estimates to simulate field datasets did show reasonably good fits and indicated consistent differences between sets in comparison with earlier studies. We conclude that estimates of migration using these methods are more an approximation of the homogenization among local communities over time rather than a direct measurement of migration and hence have a direct relationship with beta diversity. As betadiversity is the result of many (non)‐neutral processes, we have to admit that migration as estimated in a spatial explicit world encompasses not only direct migration but is an ecological aggregate of these processes. The parameter m of neutral models then appears more as an emerging property revealed by neutral theory instead of being an effective mechanistic parameter and spatially implicit models should be rejected as an approximation of forest dynamics. 相似文献

Using complementary metrics to evaluate phylogenetic diversity can facilitate the delimitation of floristic units and conservation priority areas. In this study, we describe the spatial patterns of phylogenetic alpha and beta diversity, phylogenetic endemism, and evolutionary distinctiveness of the hyperdiverse Ecuador Amazon forests and define priority areas for conservation. We established a network of 62 one‐hectare plots in terra firme forests of Ecuadorian Amazon. In these plots, we tagged, collected, and identified every single adult tree with dbh ≥10 cm. These data were combined with a regional community phylogenetic tree to calculate different phylogenetic diversity (PD) metrics in order to create spatial models. We used Loess regression to estimate the spatial variation of taxonomic and phylogenetic beta diversity as well as phylogenetic endemism and evolutionary distinctiveness. We found evidence for the definition of three floristic districts in the Ecuadorian Amazon, supported by both taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity data. Areas with high levels of phylogenetic endemism and evolutionary distinctiveness in Ecuadorian Amazon forests are unprotected. Furthermore, these areas are severely threatened by proposed plans of oil and mining extraction at large scales and should be prioritized in conservation planning for this region. 相似文献

Objective
Diterpene alkaloids are secondary plant metabolites and chemotaxonomical markers with a strong biological activity. These compounds are characteristic for the Ranunculaceae family, while their occurrence in other taxa is rare. Several species of the Spiraea genus (Rosaceae) are examples of this rarity. Screening Spiraea species for alkaloid content is a chemotaxonomical approach to clarify the classification and phylogeny of the genus. Novel pharmacological findings make further investigations of Spiraea diterpene alkaloids promising.Results
Seven Spiraea species were screened for diterpene alkaloids. Phytochemical and pharmacological investigations were performed on Spiraea chamaedryfolia, the species found to contain diterpene alkaloids. Its alkaloid-rich fractions were found to exert a remarkable xanthine-oxidase inhibitory activity and a moderate antibacterial activity. The alkaloid distribution within the root was clarified by microscopic techniques.969.
Loss and fragmentation of natural habitats can lead to alterations of plant–animal interactions and ecosystems functioning. Insect herbivory, an important antagonistic interaction is expected to be influenced by habitat fragmentation through direct negative effects on herbivore community richness and indirect positive effects due to losses of natural enemies. Plant community changes with habitat fragmentation added to the indirect effects but with little predictable impact. Here, we evaluated habitat fragmentation effects on both herbivory and herbivore diversity, using novel hierarchical meta‐analyses. Across 89 studies, we found a negative effect of habitat fragmentation on abundance and species richness of herbivores, but only a non‐significant trend on herbivory. Reduced area and increased isolation of remaining fragments yielded the strongest effect on abundance and species richness, while specialist herbivores were the most vulnerable to habitat fragmentation. These fragmentation effects were more pronounced in studies with large spatial extent. The strong reduction in herbivore diversity, but not herbivory, indicates how important common generalist species can be in maintaining herbivory as a major ecosystem process. 相似文献

In a study of the genetic relationships among 879 anadromous brown trout Salmo trutta from 13 streams at the Island of Gotland, Sweden, using RFLP analysis of a mitochondrial DNA segment (NADH dehydrogenase-1 gene), six haplotypes were detected. Significant genetic divergence was observed among streams as well as between cohorts within streams. Approximately 8–9% of the total variation was due to differences between populations, and 4–5% was explained by differences between cohorts within populations. The female effective population size ( N ef ) was assessed from temporal haplotype frequency differences between consecutive cohorts; the estimated average N ef over all populations was just below 30, suggesting that these populations were effectively quite small. With such small effective sizes the populations are expected to loose genetic variability quickly, but the observed levels do not appear particularly low. This indicates that female migration between streams occurs. The observed level of differentiation does not support the presumption that a particular pre-smolt migratory behaviour observed in Gotland streams, with large portions of fry leaving for the sea soon after hatching, results in a reduced homing ability. From a conservation management perspective the Gotland brown trout streams should be regarded as a population system where the vitality and survival of brown trout in one stream is dependent on the opportunity of contact and exchange of individuals from other streams. 相似文献
