Nursery pollination in Caryophyllaceae species by Hadena and Perizoma moths has been extensively described in the last few decades. Evidence across multiple pairs of species shows that such pollination systems constitute relatively specialized interactions, shifting between parasitism and mutualism depending on the presence of effective co‐pollinators. In this work, we describe a new specific Silene–Hadena interaction, the Silene ciliata–Hadena consparcatoides system. Although S. ciliata presents a typical nocturnal pollination syndrome, diurnal flower visitors have also been recorded, which motivated us to evaluate the costs and benefits of this nursery moth pollination to the plant. We experimentally induced two pollination regimes at non‐overlapping day‐night periods in a natural population of S. ciliata, and compared their effects on plant reproductive success from flower to seedling stages. Flower scent composition of S. ciliata and antennal responses of H. consparcatoides to this scent were recorded to evaluate the specificity of olfactory signals in this interaction system. In accordance with its nocturnal pollination syndrome, S. ciliata emitted a greater amount of flower scent compounds during the night. Some of the predominant scent compounds, such as benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate and methyl salicylate elicited signals in the antennae of H. consparcatoides. Diurnal pollination produced more fruits per flower than nocturnal pollination, but the latter produced higher brood size resulting in similar overall fecundity. However, seeds generated from diurnal pollination were heavier and germinated better. We conclude that despite its nocturnal pollination syndrome, S. ciliata achieved similar reproductive success and higher offspring vigour under the diurnal pollinator regime. Although H. consparcatoides is specialized in S. ciliata, its shortage or absence would not jeopardize the reproductive success of its host plant. DNA replication occurs in microscopically visible complexes at discrete sites (replication foci) in the nucleus. These foci consist of DNA associated with replication machineries, i.e., large protein complexes involved in DNA replication. To study the dynamics of these nuclear replication foci in living cells, we fused proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), a central component of the replication machinery, with the green fluorescent protein (GFP). Imaging of stable cell lines expressing low levels of GFP-PCNA showed that replication foci are heterogeneous in size and lifetime. Time-lapse studies revealed that replication foci clearly differ from nuclear speckles and coiled bodies as they neither show directional movements, nor do they seem to merge or divide. These four dimensional analyses suggested that replication factories are stably anchored in the nucleus and that changes in the pattern occur through gradual, coordinated, but asynchronous, assembly and disassembly throughout S phase. 相似文献

The sand dunes of the Basin and Range Province of western North America contain obligate and endemic species of Coleoptera and Orthoptera. These dune habitats represent islands on which the isolated insular faunas are in a state of relaxation. The calculated temperature metric used in this study reflects the relative measure of disorder, by which the degree of nestedness can be determined. Sixteen dunes in the Basin and Range Province are shown to comprise a nested subset of obligate Coleoptera and Orthoptera. These sixteen sand dunes remain nested even when the endemic species are excluded from the analysis. The absence of endemic species slightly decreased the calculated temperature of the island-dune archipelago. Therefore, endemic species present in the sand dunes do not significantly contribute to the high degree of nestedness of dune obligate Coleoptera and Orthoptera in the Basin and Range Province. The dunes can also be separated into five distinct sub-basins, two of which contain only one sand dune. These sub-basins are not significantly nested, but together define the nested structure of the Basin and Range Province. 相似文献

The conserved RNA recognition motif 3 of U2 snRNA auxiliary factor (U2AF 65) is essential in vivo but dispensable for activity in vitro 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The general splicing factor U2AF(65) recognizes the polypyrimidine tract (Py tract) that precedes 3' splice sites and has three RNA recognition motifs (RRMs). The C-terminal RRM (RRM3), which is highly conserved, has been proposed to contribute to Py-tract binding and establish protein-protein contacts with splicing factors mBBP/SF1 and SAP155. Unexpectedly, we find that the human RRM3 domain is dispensable for U2AF(65) activity in vitro. However, it has an essential function in Schizosaccharomyces pombe distinct from binding to the Py tract or to mBBP/SF1 and SAP155. First, deletion of RRM3 from the human protein has no effect on Py-tract binding. Second, RRM123 and RRM12 select similar sequences from a random pool of RNA. Third, deletion of RRM3 has no effect on the splicing activity of U2AF(65) in vitro. However, deletion of the RRM3 domain of S. pombe U2AF(59) abolishes U2AF function in vivo. In addition, certain amino acid substitutions on the four-stranded beta-sheet surface of RRM3 compromise U2AF function in vivo without affecting binding to mBBP/SF1 or SAP155 in vitro. We propose that RRM3 has an unrecognized function that is possibly relevant for the splicing of only a subset of cellular introns. New analogs of bacterial siderophores with one, two or three catecholate moieties were synthesized using various mono- and diamino acid and dipetide scaffolds, respectively. In addition to 2,3-dihydroxybenzoyl siderophore analogs and their acylated derivatives, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoyl derivatives were prepared. Furthermore, the synthesis of a new triscatecholate serving as an intimate model for enterobactin is reported. Most of the new compounds gave a positive CAS-test and were active as siderophores tested by growth promotion assays with a set of siderophore indicator mutants under iron limitation. Spider diversity in cereal fields: comparing factors at local, landscape and regional scales 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Aim Factors acting at various scales may affect biodiversity, demanding analyses at multiple spatial scales in order to understand how community richness is determined. Here, we adopted a hierarchical approach to test the contribution of region, landscape heterogeneity, local management (organic vs. conventional) and location within field (edge vs. centre) to the species richness and abundance of spiders in cereals. Location Three regions of western and central Germany: Leine Bergland, Soester Boerde, and Lahn‐Dill Bergland. Methods Forty‐two paired organic and conventional winter wheat fields were compared. Field pairs were located in areas ranging from structurally simple to structurally complex landscapes. In May and June 2003, spiders were sampled using pitfall traps. Linear mixed models were used to determine the relationship of spider diversity and abundance with regional spatial factors and landscape heterogeneity within a 500‐m radius, as well as with local management and within‐field location. Results Within‐field location of the traps and landscape heterogeneity were the best predictors of species richness: more species were found in field edges and in heterogeneous landscapes. Region and local management had no effect on species richness. Activity density was higher in field edges and differed among regions. Main conclusions The diversity of farmland spiders was influenced by differences at two of the spatial scales (edge vs. centre, simple vs. complex landscapes), but not at the two others (field management, region), emphasizing the importance of analyses at a variety of spatial scales for an adequate explanation of patterns in biodiversity. Our study suggests that promoting heterogeneity in land use at landscape scales is one of the keys to promoting spider diversity in agroecosystems. 相似文献
