Abstract Plasmid-minus derivatives of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii have been isolated. Cured strains lacked symbiotic properties, however they showed increased heavy metal resistance. In the presence of 70 ppm chromium the parent strain, unlike cured derivatives, is unable to grow explanta but can nevertheless nodulate clover.
We propose that rhizobia can circumvent exposure to the heavy metal by entering the plant roots.
Acetylene reduction tests showed that nodulated plants, grown in the presence of 10 ppm of chromium, had an increased nitrogenase activity compared to the control plants.  相似文献

Studies on leadership have focused either on physiological state as the key predictor (i.e. "leading according to need"), or else on temperamental asymmetries among group members (i.e. intrinsic leadership). In this paper, we explore how both factors interact in determining the emergence of leaders. We observed pairs of sticklebacks with varying degrees of temperamental difference, and recorded their movements back and forth between a safe covered area and a risky foraging area, both before and after satiating one of the two pair members (but not the other). Before satiation, when the fish had similar hunger levels, temperament was a good predictor of social roles, with the bolder member of a pair leading and the shyer member following. The effect of satiation depended on which fish received the additional food. When the shyer member of a pair was fed, and consequently became less active, the bolder fish did not change its behaviour but continued to lead. By contrast, when the bolder member of a pair was fed, and consequently initiated fewer trips out of cover, the shyer partner compensated by initiating trips more frequently itself. In pairs that differed only a little in temperament, feeding the bolder fish actually led to a role reversal, with the shyer fish emerging as a leader in the majority of joint trips out of cover. Our results show that leadership emerges as the consequence of multiple factors, and that their interaction can be complex.  相似文献

Capillary electrophoresis was used for the separation of a combinatorially synthesized N-(substituted)-glycine (NSG) peptoid mixture. This mixture consisted of 24 trimeric compounds sharing a common backbone structure but differing in the side chain attached at the N-terminal residue. Standards of the individual components were unavailable so that development of the separation was based on the mixture. A variety of buffer additives were investigated to enhance the CE resolution of this diverse mixture. Ion-pairing agents, cyclodextrins and organic modifiers were all evaluated as buffer additives. The best separations were achieved using a combination of buffer additives, each serving a different purpose in the separation. Heptane sulphonic acid (HSA) was used to reduce hydrophobic intramolecular interactions. Methyl-β-cyclodextrin was used to provide host–guest interactions in order to resolve the very hydrophobic components of the NSG-peptoid mixture. The optimized run buffer consisted of 250 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 2.0, with 25 mM HSA and 40 mg/ml BCD and resulted in the resolution of 21 peaks for the 24 peptoids in the combinatorial mixture.  相似文献

The relationships between non‐radiative energy dissipation and the carotenoid content, especially the xanthophyll cycle components, were studied in sun and shade leaves of several plants possessing C3 ( Hedera helix and Laurus nobilis ) or C4 ( Zea mays and Sorghum bicolor ) photosynthetic pathways. Sun‐shade acclimation caused marked changes in the organisation and function of photosynthetic apparatus, including significant variation in carotenoid content and composition. The contents of zanthophyll cycle pigments were higher in sun than in shade leaves in all species, but this difference was considerably greater in C3 than in C4 plants. The proportion of photoconvertible violaxanthin, that is the amount of violaxanthin (V) which can actually be de‐epoxidised to zeaxanthin, was much greater in sun than in shade leaves. The amount of photoconvertible V was always linearly dependent on the chlorophyll a/b ratio, although the slope of the relationship varied especially between C3 and C4 species. The leaf zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin contents were correlated with non‐radiative energy dissipation in all species under different light environments. These relationships were curvilinear and variable between sun and shade leaves and between C3 and C4 species. Hence, the dissipation of excess energy does not appear to be univocally dependent on zeaxanthin content and other photoprotective mechanisms may be involved under high irradiance stress. Such mechanisms appear largely variable between C3 and C4 species according to their photosynthetic characteristics.  相似文献

The present study is concerned with the uptake and metabolism of choline by the rat brain. Intraperitoneal administration of choline chloride (4-60 mg/kg) caused a dose-dependent elevation of the plasma choline concentration from 11.8 to up to 165.2 microM within 10 min and the reversal of the negative arteriovenous difference (AVD) of choline across the brain to positive values at plasma choline levels of greater than 23 microM. Net choline release and uptake were linearly dependent on the plasma choline level in the physiological range of 10-50 microM, whereas the CSF choline level was significantly increased only at plasma choline levels of greater than 50 microM. The bolus injection of 60 mg/kg of [3H]choline chloride caused the net uptake of greater than 500 nmol/g of choline by the brain as calculated from the AVD, which was reflected in a minor increase of free choline level and a long-lasting increase of brain phosphorylcholine content, which paralleled the uptake curve. Loss of label from phosphorylcholine 30 min to 24 h after choline administration was accompanied by an increase of label in phosphatidylcholine, an indication of a delayed transfer of newly taken-up choline into membrane choline pools. In conclusion, homeostasis of brain choline is maintained by a complex system that interrelates choline net movements into and out of the brain and choline incorporation into and release from phospholipids.  相似文献

In cultured dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons prelabeled with [3H]arachidonic acid [( 3H]AA), bradykinin (BK) stimulation resulted in increased levels of radioactive diacylglycerol, monoacylglycerol, and free AA. The transient increases in content of radioactive diacylglycerol and monoacylglycerol preceded the increase in level of free AA, suggesting the contribution of a diacylglycerol lipase pathway to AA release. An analysis of the molecular species of diacylglycerols in unstimulated cultures revealed the presence of two primary [3H]AA-containing species, 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonoyl and 1-stearoyl-2-arachidonoyl diacylglycerol. BK stimulation resulted in a preferential increase in content of 1-stearoyl-2-arachidonoyl diacylglycerol. When DRG cultures were labeled with [3H]stearic acid, treatment with BK increased the amount of label in diacylglycerol and free stearic acid, but not in monoacylglycerol. This result suggested that AA release occurred through the successive actions of an sn-1 diacylglycerol lipase and monoacylglycerol lipase. Other data supporting a diacylglycerol lipase pathway was the significant inhibition of [3H]AA release and consequent accumulation of diacylglycerol by RG 80267, which preferentially inhibits diacylglycerol lipase. Analysis of the molecular species profiles of individual phospholipids in DRG neurons indicated that phosphoinositide hydrolysis may account for a significant portion of the rapid increase in content of 1-stearoyl-2-arachidonoyl diacylglycerol. We were unable to obtain evidence that the phospholipase A2 pathway makes a significant contribution to BK-stimulated AA release in DRG cultures. Under our assay conditions there were no BK-stimulated increases in levels of radioactive lysophosphatidylinositol, lysophosphatidylcholine, or lysophosphatidylethanolamine in cultures prelabeled with [3H]inositol, [3H]choline, or [3H]-ethanolamine, respectively.  相似文献

Most attempts to model the evolution of parental care assume that caring and mating are mutually exclusive activities (i.e., individuals acquire and guard broods "sequentially"). However, in most fish and certain insects, males can keep mating and collecting additional eggs while continuing to guard broods obtained earlier (i.e., males guard "overlapping" broods). We present a model of parental care with overlapping broods in which males can mate and guard simultaneously, even though there is a trade-off between these two activities. Within this framework, we show that male care is favored by short female processing times and high population densities, which minimize the mating cost of care. Relatively low mortality while guarding is also important for the stability of male care. Female care, on the other hand, is favored by long female processing times and low populations densities, which lead to longer intermating intervals. Biparental care is stable only when the cost to benefit ratio of care was not biased toward either sex. We derive quantitative estimates of fitness for different strategies for two species of assassin bugs with male and female uniparental care and show that the model predicts the correct form of care for both species. We believe our model might help explain the prevalence of male uniparental care in certain taxa, such as fish.  相似文献
