Volatiles produced by the interaction of Rhopalosiphum padi and wheat, and semiochemicals which elicit the spacing behaviour of R. padi on wheat and oat, were evaluated in an olfactometer against the cereal aphid parasitoid Aphidius rhopalosiphi . The parasitoid was attracted by volatiles produced by the R. padi -wheat interaction at high density of aphids, but not by the R. padi -wheat interaction at low density. Compounds produced by the interaction of wheat or oat that was infested with a high density of aphids (approximately 9 aphids/cm2), 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (MHO), 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol (MHOH), 2-tridecanone (2-T), and methyl salicylate (MS), neither attracted nor repelled A. rhopalosiphi as pure compounds or in the naturally occurring mixture. The results are discussed in terms of the use of semiochemicals and parasitoids in the integrated management of aphid pests.  相似文献

Aims Foliar herbivory and water stress may affect floral traits attractive to pollinators. Plant genotypes may differ in their responses to the interplay between these factors, and evolution of phenotypic plasticity could be expected, particularly in heterogeneous environments. We aimed at evaluating the effects of simulated herbivory and experimental drought on floral traits attractive to pollinators in genetic families of the annual tarweed Madia sativa, which inhabits heterogeneous environments in terms of water availability, herbivore abundance and pollinator abundance.Methods In a greenhouse experiment with 15 inbred lines from a M. sativa population located in central Chile (Mediterranean-type climate), we measured the effects of apical bud damage and reduced water availability on: number of ray florets per flower head, length of ray florets, flower head diameter, number of open flower heads per plant, flowering plant height and flowering time.Important findings Apical damage and water shortage reduced phenotypic expression of floral traits attractive to pollinators via additive and non-additive effects. Plants in low water showed decreased height and had fewer and shorter ray florets, and fewer and smaller flower heads. Damaged plants showed delayed flowering, were less tall, and showed shorter ray florets and smaller flower heads. The number of ray florets was reduced by damage only in the low water treatment. Plant height, flowering time and number of flower heads showed among-family variation. These traits also showed genetic variation for plasticity to water availability. Ray floret length, flower head size and time to flowering showed genetic variation for plastic responses to apical damage. Plasticity in flowering time may allow M. sativa to adjust to the increased aridity foreseen for its habitat. Because genetic variation for plastic responses was detected, conditions are given for evolutionary responses to selective forces acting on plastic traits. We suggest that the evolution of adaptive floral plasticity in M. sativa in this ecological scenario (heterogeneous environments) would result from selective forces that include not only pollinators but also resource availability and herbivore damage.  相似文献

An increasing number of human cases of gnathostomiasis have been reported in Sinaloa, Mexico, most of whom have a custom of eating of raw fish dishes such as 'cebiche'. Here we report five adult patients, three women and two men, having an acute episode of vomiting and abdominal pain a few minutes after eating a dish of cebiche prepared from a spotted sleeper perch (Eleotris picta) fished from a nearby lake in southern Sinaloa. All five patients experienced acute throat pain, chest and joint pains, headache and fever. One patient, a 55-year-old male, was hospitalized with suspected pancreatitis and pneumonia. By 8-9 days later, all five patients developed between three and 12 edematous, migrating skin lesions on the back, abdomen, upper and lower extremities, face, eye and scalp. By ELISA, all of them were sero-positive to Gnathostoma doloresi antigen and had elevated IgE levels. Eosinophilia was found in two patients. These patients lived in an agricultural and fishing community. In this community we carried out a sero-epidemiological survey and study of living conditions in a random sample of 309 individuals distributed in 74 households. Frequent consumption of raw fish was reported in 36% of households, and 12 individuals had a clinical history of migrating skin lesions. The sero-prevalence to Gnathostoma antigens was 34.95%. Five fish species and four species of ichthyophagous birds collected from three lakes in the village and a nearby estuary were infected with the advanced third-stage larvae of G. binucleatum, a species found in Ecuador and Mexico. The results describe the first known outbreak of acute gnathostomiasis on the American continent.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the present limnological conditions of Lagartijo reservoir (North central Venezuela) and to compare them with conditions reported in early studies. Lagartijo reservoir supplies an important part of the water demand for Caracas city and wide fluctuations on water volume occur annually. Relevant physical, chemical and biological data were obtained from three sampling stations between July 1990 and April 1992. The reservoir was permanently stratified with a well defined thermocline. The main tributary (Lagartijo river), with a temperature about 6° C colder than the surface temperature of the reservoir, flows through the hypolimnion producing distinct chemical and biological properties. The average of the daily integral phytoplankton photosynthesis was 1550 mg C m−2 d−1. The present annual average of the net photosynthetic activity is about 40% lower than the reported for 1970 and corresponds to an apparent decrease in phytoplankton biomass and to the reduction of the euphotic zone. Photosynthetic activity was higher for the wet season than for the dry season. Actual chlorophyll a concentration in the euphotic zone averages 4.9 μg l−1. Abundance of zooplankton was significantly decreased in comparison to 1976. Mean zooplankton biomass (dry weight) for the upper 10 m layer was 596 μg l−1. Copepods accounted for most of this biomass, followed by cladocerans and rotifers. For the first time, a freshwater medusa (probably Craspedacusta sowerbyi) was collected from Venezuelan waters.  相似文献

The possibility of using the enzyme thermistor (ET) for the direct determination of kinetic parameters (Km, Ki, Vm) of immobilized enzyme (IME) was evaluated using different preparations of invertase conjugated to bead celluloses. Two different ET columns packed with IME were operated in the mode of a differential enzyme reactor (short length, low substrate conversion). Kinetic parameters of the above IME reactor were computed by a nonlinear curve-fitting procedure. The obtained kinetic parameters were superverified by means of an independent differential reactor (DR) system. This system utilized an indirect postcolumn analytical method based on determination of glucose concentration in the stirred reservoir. Best agreement between the data acquired by direct (ET) and indirect (DR) methods was obtained if the ET column was operated at flow rates within the range of 1.0-1.5 ml min-1 using invertase-cellulose chlorotriazine conjugate. Influence of heat loss and flow nonideality is discussed. The proposed ET method offers a rapid, convenient, and general approach to determination of kinetic constants of IME preparations by omitting postcolumn analytical methods.  相似文献

Neurocysticercosis is caused by penetration of the tapeworm Taenia solium larvae into the central nervous system resulting in a diverse range of neurologic complications including epilepsy in endemic areas that globalization spreads worldwide. Sensitive and specific immunodiagnosis is needed for the early detection and elimination of the parasite, but the lack of standardized, readily obtainable antigens is a challenge. Here, we used the phage display for resolving the problem. The rationale of the strategy rests on the concept that the screening of combinatorial libraries with polyclonal serum to pathogens reveals families of peptides mimicking the pathogen most immunodominant epitopes indispensable for the successful diagnosis. The screening of a 7mer library with serum IgG of four pigs experimentally infected with parasite followed by computer aided segregation of the selected sequences resulted in the discovery of four clusters of homologous sequences of which one presented a family of ten mimotopes selected by three infected pig serum IgGs; the common motif sequence LSPF carried by the family was considered to be the core of an immunodominant epitope of the parasite critical for the binding with the antibody that selected the mimotopes. The immunoassay testing permitted to select a mimotope whose synthetic peptide free of the phage with the amino acid sequence Leu-Ser-Fen-Pro-Ser-Val-Val that distinguished well a panel of 21 cerebrospinal fluids of neurocysticercosis patients from the fluids of individuals with neurological complications of other etiology. This peptide is proposed as a lead for developing a novel molecularly defined diagnostic antigen(s) for the neurocysticercosis.  相似文献

Pollination is a requisite for sexual reproduction in plants and its success may determine the reproductive output of individuals. Pollinator preference for some floral designs or displays that are lacking or poorly developed in focal plants may constrain the pollination process. Foliar herbivory may affect the expression of floral traits, thus reducing pollinator attraction. Natural populations of the Andean species Alstroemeria exerens (Alstromeriaceae) in central Chile show high levels of foliar herbivory, and floral traits show phenotypic variation. In the present field study, we addressed the attractive role of floral traits in A. exerens and the effect of foliar damage on them. Particularly, we posed the following questions: (1) Is there an association between floral display and design traits and the number and duration of pollinator visits? and (2) Does foliar damage affect the floral traits associated with pollinator visitation? To assess the attractiveness of floral traits for pollinators, we recorded the number and duration of visits in 101 focal plants. To evaluate the effects of foliar damage on floral traits, 100 plants of similar size were randomly assigned to control or damage groups during early bud development. Damaged plants were clipped using scissors (50% of leaf area) and control plants were manually excluded from natural herbivores (<5% of leaf area eaten). During the peak of flowering, we recorded the number of open flowers, and estimated corolla and nectar guide areas. The number and duration of pollinator visits was statistically associated with floral design and display traits. Plants with larger displays, corollas and nectar guide areas received more visits. Visits lasted longer as display increases. In addition, foliar damage affected attractive traits. Damaged plants had fewer open flowers and smaller nectar guide areas. We conclude that foliar damage affects plant attractiveness for pollinators and hence may indirectly affect plant fitness.  相似文献

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes, located on chromosome 6p21.3, have a crucial role in susceptibility to various autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, such as celiac disease and type 1 diabetes. Certain HLA heterodimers, namely DQ2 (encoded by the DQA1*05 and DQB1*02 alleles) and DQ8 (DQA1*03 and DQB1*0302), are necessary for the development of celiac disease. Traditional genotyping of HLA genes is laborious, time-consuming, and expensive. A novel HLA-genotyping method, using six HLA-tagging single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and suitable for high-throughput approaches, was described recently. Our aim was to validate this method in the Finnish, Hungarian, and Italian populations. The six previously reported HLA-tagging SNPs were genotyped in patients with celiac disease and in healthy individuals from Finland, Hungary, and two distinct regions of Italy. The potential of this method was evaluated in analyzing how well the tag SNP results correlate with the HLA genotypes previously determined using traditional HLA-typing methods. Using the tagging SNP method, it is possible to determine the celiac disease risk haplotypes accurately in Finnish, Hungarian, and Italian populations, with specificity and sensitivity ranging from 95% to 100%. In addition, it predicts homozygosity and heterozygosity for a risk haplotype, allowing studies on genotypic risk effects. The method is transferable between populations and therefore suited for large-scale research studies and screening of celiac disease among high-risk individuals or at the population level.
