Climate change is predicted to be dramatic at high latitudes. Still, climate impact on high latitude lake ecosystems is poorly understood. We studied 15 subarctic lakes located in a climate gradient comprising an air temperature difference of about 6°C. We show that lake water productivity varied by one order of magnitude along the temperature gradient. This variation was mainly caused by variations in the length of the ice‐free period and, more importantly, in the supply of organic carbon and inorganic nutrients, which followed differences in terrestrial vegetation cover along the gradient. The results imply that warming will have rapid effects on the productivity of high latitude lakes, by prolongation of ice‐free periods. However, a more pronounced consequence will be a delayed stimulation of the productivity following upon changes of the lakes terrestrial surroundings and subsequent increasing input of elements that stimulate the production of lake biota.  相似文献

Do Arctic waders use adaptive wind drift?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We analysed five data sets of flight directions of migrating arctic waders in relation to winds, recorded by tracking radar and optical range finder, in order to find out if these birds compensate for wind drift, or allow themselves to be drifted by winds. Our purpose was to investigate whether arctic waders use adaptive wind drift strategies or not. The data sets were collected in Siberia (two sets) and Canada during post-breeding (autumn) migration, and in Mauritania and South Sweden during pre-breeding (spring) migration. Both significant drift and compensation effects were found in three of the data sets, Canada, Mauritania and South Sweden. Almost no compensation was found in birds departing in easterly directions from the Siberian tundra (complete drift), while no drift effect was found in birds departing in westerly directions (complete compensation). There were indications that at least some populations of waders may use an adaptive drift strategy consisting of drift at high altitude and/or in high wind speed combined with compensation at low altitude and/or in lower wind speeds, but support for this idea was rather weak and not consistent. Our results were instead more in accordance with the adaptive drift theory that predicts initial drift during the migratory journey, followed by compensation during later stages as the birds are approaching their destinations. Such a strategy implies that arctic waders, at least adult birds, have the capacity of true navigation. A comparison with earlier studies of migrating arctic waders from different parts of the world show that all results so far may be interpreted in accordance with this general adaptive drift strategy. An element of non-adaptive drift can, however, not be completely ruled out.  相似文献

This report presents data from experiments on seed dispersal by wind for ten species of the family Apiaceae. Seed shadows were obtained in the field under natural conditions, using wind speeds between four and ten m/s. The flight of individual seeds was followed by eye, and seed shadows were acquired, with median distances varying from 0.7 to 3.1 m between species. Multiple regression models of wind speed and seed weight on dispersal distance were significant for six out of ten species; wind speed had significant effects in seven cases, but seed weight only once. A good correlation between mean terminal falling velocity of the seeds of a species and median dispersal distance, indicates the promising explanatory power that individual terminal velocity data might have on dispersal distance, together with wind speed and turbulence. The theory that seeds that seem to be adapted to wind dispersal travel much longer distances than seeds that have no adaptation was tested. Flattened and winged seeds were indeed found to be transported further by wind, but not much further. Moreover, the species with wind-adapted seeds were also taller, being an alternative explanation since their seeds experienced higher wind speeds at these greater heights. Furthermore, flattened and winged seeds were disseminated from ripe umbels at lower wind speeds in the laboratory. This means that the observed difference in dispersal distance would have been smaller when species specific thresholds for wind speed were incorporated in the field experiments. We argue therefore, that seed morphology is not always the best predictor in classifying species in groups with distinctly different dispersal ability.  相似文献

A device, which automatically and continuously keeps moving plants in fixed positions, has been constructed. The apparatus is based on optical detection of any movements of the plant organ under study. The plant organ is kept in the desired position by means of wires, and the force necessary to apply to the wires to achieve this is recorded. The force reflects any tendency of the plant organ to move. The system is controlled by an Apple II computer. The device can work in one or two dimensions and record compensation forces in a wide range. In the experiments mentioned below, the magnitude of the forces necessary to keep the plants in a fixed position was of the order of 10-4N.
Circadian leaf movements of Oxalis regnellii Mig. were studied in the device. The leaf rhythm continued, although the leaflets were clamped and the light input on the leaf therefore constant. Circumnutation of hypocotyls of Helianthus annus L. cv. Californicus were drastically reduced in amplitude when the hypocotyls were kept in vertical position by the wires. Since the gravitropic input signal to this system was zeroed by the equipment, the results demonstrated that in the absence of gravitropic inputs the circumnutation reactions drastically diminish. This confirmed that circumnutations of these hypocotyls are influenced by gravity. Finally, the apparatus was used to study phototropic reactions: By clamping phototropically stimulated coleoptiles of Avena sativa L. cv. Seger no gravitational stimulations were involved and the phototropic reaction without interference from gravity could be studied.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA synthesis is necessary for the normal function of the organelle and for the eukaryotic organism as a whole. Here we demonstrate, using two-dimensional agarose gel electrophoresis to analyse replication intermediates, that unidirectional, strand-coupled DNA synthesis is the prevalent mode of mtDNA replication in Drosophila melanogaster. Commencing within the single, extended non-coding region (NCR), replication proceeds around the circular genome, manifesting an irregular rate of elongation, and pausing frequently in specific regions. Evidence for a limited contribution of strand-asynchronous DNA synthesis was found in a subset of mtDNA molecules, but confined to the ribosomal RNA gene region, just downstream of the NCR. Our findings imply that strand-coupled replication is widespread amongst metazoans, and should inform future research on mtDNA metabolism in D. melanogaster.  相似文献

Molecular studies were performed on 101 cases of confined placental mosaicism (CPM) involving autosomal trisomy. The origin of the trisomic cell line was determined in 54 cases (from 51 pregnancies), 47 of which were also analyzed for the presence of uniparental disomy (UPD) in the disomic cell line. An additional 47 cases were analyzed for parental origin in the disomic cell line only. A somatic (postmeiotic) origin of the trisomy was observed in 22 cases and included the majority of cases with CPM for trisomy 2, 7, 8, 10, and 12. Most cases of CPM involving trisomy 9, 16, and 22 were determined to be meiotic. Fetal maternal UPD was found in 17 of 94 informative CPM cases, involving trisomy 2 (1 case), 7 (1 case), 16 (13 cases), and 22 (2 cases). The placental trisomy was of meiotic origin in all 17 cases associated with fetal UPD (P = .00005). A meiotic origin also correlated with the levels of trisomy in cultured chorionic villi samples (CVS) (P = .0002) and trophoblast (P = .00005). Abnormal pregnancy outcome (usually IUGR) correlated with meiotic origin (P = .0003), the presence of fetal UPD (P = 4 x 10(-7)), and the level of trisomy in trophoblast (P = 3 x 10(-7)) but not with the level of trisomy in CVS or term chorion. The good fit of somatic errors with the expected results could have been observed only if few true meiotic errors were misclassified by these methods as a somatic error. These data indicate that molecular determination of origin is a useful predictor of pregnancy outcome, whereas the level of trisomy observed in cultured CVS is not. In addition, UPD for some chromosomes may affect prenatal, but not postnatal, development, possibly indicating that imprinting effects for these chromosomes are confined to placental tissues.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the preference of a leaf beetle to different Salix clones, and to relate this preference to plant chemistry. The preference of Gonioctena linnaeana Schrank (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) was tested in cafeteria experiments using its host Salix triandra L. (Salicaeae) from three Swedish isolated populations and one Russian population from the main distribution range of the host. The leaves from the different host clones were used to analyse the content of phenolic glucosides and the amount of condensed tannins. The larvae did not show any feeding preferences for host clones from the population they originated from, but all Swedish host populations were preferred over the Russian host population. This suggests a preference for regional hosts. We analyzed whether leaf chemistry parameters may explain host plant preferences. Chemical analysis of the leaves showed that the quantities, but not the quality, of the phenolic compounds differed between populations. A Principal Component Analysis of the chemical data also highlighted a difference between the Swedish and Russian host plant populations. The two most important compounds separating Russian from Swedish clones were gallocatechin and salidroside. However, the difference in preference could also be a result of, for example, nutritional quality, water content, or leaf texture. The relative importance of these different factors should be evaluated in future experiments.  相似文献
