We used computer-generated stimuli to assess the stimulus parameters eliciting prey-directed behaviors in four mantis species: Rhombodera basalis (60 mm body length), Deroplatys lobata (70 mm), Hierodula membranacea (80 mm), Miomantis sp (38 mm). All responded appetitively to erratically moving disks subtending 10° or more. R. basalis responded more consistently to checkered (versus solid black) disks; only D. lobata displayed a size preference (14–23 deg disks); Miomantis sp. struck at disks as large as did the largest species; only Miomantis sp. displayed approaching behavior. H. membranacea and R. basalis preferred black disks on a white background (versus the reverse), and red disks (versus blue or green) on a brightness-matched grey background. All preferred elongated stimuli moving parallel (versus perpendicular) to their long axes.  相似文献

Abstract Lipopolysaccharide (LPS, endotoxin) was extracted from biofilm and planktonically grown monoagglutinable (1118) and polyagglutinable (258 and 15703) strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from cystic fibrosis patients with chronic pulmonary infections. Analysis by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) followed by immune-detection of LPS fractions showed an S-form appearance of strain 1118 and 258 with three distinct clusters of high molecular weight bands, whereas 15703 appeared semi-rough. LPS of semi-rough cells grown planktonically and as biofilm showed a very similar PAGE pattern; however, the core/lipid A R-LPS fraction was more prominent in biofilm-LPS than in planktonic-LPS extracted from the S-form bacteria (1118 and 258). The apparent change in LPS sub-unit components of the bacteria when grown as biofilm may reflect changes in the outer membrane structure that contribute to the altered physico-chemical properties of biofilm bacteria in foreign-device associated infections and chronic P. aeruginosa lung infection in cystic fibrosis patients.  相似文献

The adult frog sciatic sensory neurons have been shown to regenerate in vitro. If a crush injury is made at the beginning of culture, regeneration starts after 3.4 days and proceeds at a rate of approximately 0.8 mm/day for several days. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis was used to study the patterns of radiolabeled, fast axonally transported proteins during the first 7 days of regeneration. Interest was focused on one protein, referred to as rrp31 (regeneration-related protein 31), which changed in apparent pI from 4.9 to 5.3 when the outgrowth of new fibers started. The change was noticeable 3 days after injury and became prominent during day 5 of culturing. By day 7 the pI changed again, this time toward the original value. The in vitro results were supported by experiments in vivo. In this case the change occurred earlier, with a peak only 3 days after injury, after which the pI decreased. If adenosine at 1 mM was included in the culturing medium, the outgrowth of sensory axons was inhibited in a nontoxic way, and the pI changes of rrp31 were prevented. The temporal nature of the pI changes suggests a role for rrp31 in the initiation of the regeneration process.  相似文献

In order to explain, in terms of a morphologically based plastic response, the absence of density-dependent mortality, and the regulation of reproduction in the halophilous annual Spergularia marina , leaf demography and the use of meristems were studied in populations of three different densities. Leaf birth and death rates were almost constant at the higher densities, whereas at the lowest density both increased throughout most of the observation period. This increase was caused by the addition of new vegetative shoots, each one resembling the individuals growing at higher densities in having an almost constant leaf birth and death rate. The capacity to adjust leaf death rate to birth rate with density was high. There was no difference in the proportions of meristems used for flowering as the density increased. After the first flower had been produced, each following node produced a flower. The proportions of meristems used for vegetative shoots were strongly density-dependent; more shoots were produced at lower densities. The regulation of flower production was almost entirely caused by the addition of vegetative shoots.  相似文献
