Nowadays, the MONOD conception is the foundation for modelling the growth-connected substrat consumption. The methods of the parameter estimation for μ_max and K_s have a variable exactness. Using the experimental MONOD 's data [1] variable graphical and numerical methods are analyzed from the point of statistical view. Appropriate objective functions are proposed.     

X-linked recessively inherited non-specific mental retardation. Report of a large family.

A large kindred is described in which 22 males and 3 females show non-specific mental retardation with impaired speech. An X-linked recessive is the most likely mode of inheritance of this condition. Similar families have been described in the literature, characteristic physical abnormalities are absent and performance I.Q. tends to be higher than verbal I.Q. This possible heterogenous condition may be a major individual cause of mental deficiency in males, and may account for the excess of male retardates in the population.     

Ruddy turnstones Arenaria interpres rapidly build pectoral muscle after raptor scares

To cope with changes in the environment, organisms not only show behavioural but also phenotypic adjustments. This is well established for the digestive tract. Here we present a first case of birds adjusting their flight machinery in response to predation risk. In an indoor experiment, ruddy turnstones Arenaria interpres were subjected to an unpredictable daily appearance of either a raptor or a small gull (as a control). Ruddy turnstones experiencing threat induced by a flying raptor model, longer than after similar passage by the gull model, refrained from feeding after this disturbance. Pectoral muscle mass, but not lean mass, responded in a course of a few days to changes in the perceived threat of predation. Pectoral muscle mass increased after raptor scares. Taking the small increases in body mass into account, pectoral muscle mass was 3.6% higher than aerodynamically predicted for constant flight performance. This demonstrates that perceived risk factors may directly affect organ size.     

Reductive dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorobenzoate to 4-chlorobenzoate and hydrolytic dehalogenation of 4-chloro-, 4-bromo-, and 4-iodobenzoate by Alcaligenes denitrificans NTB-1

Alcaligenes denitrificans NTB-1, previously isolated on 4-chlorobenzoate, also utilized 4-bromo-, 4-iodo-, and 2,4-dichlorobenzoate but not 4-fluorobenzoate as a sole carbon and energy source. During growth, stoichiometric amounts of halide were released. Experiments with whole cells and cell extracts revealed that 4-bromo- and 4-iodobenzoate were metabolized like 4-chlorobenzoate, involving an initial hydrolytic dehalogenation yielding 4-hydroxybenzoate, which in turn was hydroxylated to 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate. The initial step in the metabolism of 2,4-dichlorobenzoate was catalyzed by a novel type of reaction for aerobic organisms, involving inducible reductive dechlorination to 4-chlorobenzoate. Under conditions of low and controlled oxygen concentrations, A. denitrificans NTB-1 converted all 4-halobenzoates and 2,4-dichlorobenzoate almost quantitatively to 4-hydroxybenzoate.     

Chromosomal nodulation genes: Sym-plasmid containing Agrobacterium strains need chromosomal virulence genes (chvA and chvB) for nodulation

Summary The chromosomal genes chvA and chvB of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which mediate attachment to plant cells, were found to be essential not only for tumour induction but also for the formation of root nodules on plants.     

The N-terminal sequence of ribosomal protein L10 from the archaebacterium Halobacterium marismortui and its relationship to eubacterial protein L6 and other ribosomal proteins

The amino-terminal sequence of ribosomal protein L10 from Halobacterium marismortui has been determined up to residue 54, using both a liquid- and a gas-phase sequenator. The two sequences are in good agreement. The protein is clearly homologous to protein HcuL10 from the related strain Halobacterium cutirubrum. Furthermore, a weaker but distinct homology to ribosomal protein L6 from Escherichia coli and Bacillus stearothermophilus can be detected. In addition to 7 identical amino acids in the first 36 residues in all four sequences a number of conservative replacements occurs, of mainly hydrophobic amino acids. In this common region the pattern of conserved amino acids suggests the presence of a beta-alpha fold as it occurs in ribosomal proteins L12 and L30. Furthermore, several potential cases of homology to other ribosomal components of the three ur-kingdoms have been found.     

Cotransformation of Aspergillus nidulans: a tool for replacing fungal genes

Summary When a non-selected DNA sequence was added during the transformation of amdS320 deletion strains of Aspergillus nidulans with a vector containing the wild-type amdS gene the AmdS⁺ transformants were cotransformed at a high frequency. Cotransformation of an amdS320, trpC801 double mutant strain showed that both the molar ratio of the two vectors and the concentration of the cotransforming vector affected the cotransformation frequency. The maximum frequency obtained was defined by the gene chosen as selection marker for transformation. Cotransformation was used to induce a gene replacement in A. nidulans. An amdS320 strain was transformed to AmdS⁺ and cotransformed with a DNA fragment containing a fusion between a non-functional A. nidulans trpC gene and the Escherichia coli lacZ gene. Ten AmdS⁺, LacZ⁺ transformants with a Trp^– mutant phenotype were selected. All of these strains could be transformed with a functional copy of the A. nidulans trpC gene, but only two strains yielded TrpC⁺ transformants which, with a low frequency, had a LacZ^– phenotype. These latter transformants had also lost the AmdS⁺ phenotype. Southern blotting analysis of DNA from these transformants confirmed the inactivation of the wild-type trpC gene, but revealed that amdS vector sequences were also involved in the gene replacement events.
