It has been suggested that image-forming eyes promote the evolutionary diversification (measured by species richness) of the groups that possess them. Several different processes could give rise to this effect, including diversifying selection in a new adaptive zone (or zones) and a reduced rate of extinction due to enhanced competitive abilities. I tested the generality of the hypothesis that imaging eyes increase net speciation by comparing extant species numbers of 12 groups that have such eyes (as categorized by Land and Fernald 1992) with those of their cladistic sister groups that lack such organs. Even assuming the published hypotheses of phylogenetic relationships that most favor increased net speciation of visual groups, these comparisons show no significant association between imaging eyes and species richness. Increased activity, as indicated by published accounts of locomotory speed, is significantly associated with the evolution of image-forming eyes. This suggests that a large “visual adaptive zone” might be characterized by relatively high activity. However, when diversity comparisons are limited to eight cases in which the evolution of imaging eyes is associated with increased activity, there is still no significant association between such eyes and species richness. The fossil record indicates that the only visual groups that have undergone major evolutionary radiations evolved imaging eyes early in the history of metazoans (before the Silurian). The radiations of these early groups may have largely filled up niches for visual animals and thus prevented the subsequent proliferation of other groups with image-forming eyes. Understanding the extent of gene exchange between cultivated sorghum and its wild/weedy relatives and the evolutionary processes (including farmers’ practices) that act to shape the structure of genetic diversity within and between them is an important aspect for germplasm conservation strategies, biosafety risk assessment, and crop improvement programs. In this study, molecular characterization and genetic diversity analyses were conducted on wild, weedy and cultivated sorghums collected at a local-scale in a traditional farming system in the Lambwe Valley of western Kenya. Nine simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were used to genotype 294 cultivated sorghum and 200 wild sorghum individuals. The nine SSR markers were highly polymorphic with a number of alleles that varied from 2 to 19. Overall, wild sorghums had higher genetic diversity, observed heterozygosity, total number of alleles, polymorphic information content and more genotypes per locus than the cultivated types. A Mantel test demonstrated that there was significant isolation-by-distance for wilds and cultivated materials. STRUCTURE, cluster and principal coordinate analyses consistently assigned wild and cultivated individuals to different groups but failed to place hybrids/weedy types as a single separate group from wilds. Our results provide strong evidence of significant genetic diversity retained within wilds, larger divergence between wild and cultivated materials and reduced gene flow than those previously reported in Kenya. These results demonstrate the value of the Lambwe Valley region as a genetic reservoir and the importance to conduct genetic diversity studies at the local scale to design and execute appropriate in situ conservation programs and policies. 相似文献

Introduction
Suitable biomarkers are essential for therapeutic strategies in personalized medicine in terms of diagnosis as well as of prognosis. With highly specific biomarkers, it is possible, for example, to identify patients with poor prognosis, which enables early intervention and intensive treatment. The aim of this study was to identify and validate biomarkers and possible combinations for a prospective use in immunoscintigraphy, which may improve diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with consideration of inflammatory activity in the affected joints. Therefore, we tested several monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) directed against cellular-surface molecules on cells likely to be involved in the pathogenesis of RA.Methods
Synovial tissue from patients with long-standing RA (accompanied by synovitis with varying states of current activity) and patients with acute non-RA arthritis were stained for surface molecules on different cell types by using fluorochrome-labeled antibodies. Tissue analysis was done by laser scanning cytometry (LSC), and statistical evaluation, by discriminant analysis and ROC analysis.Results
CD11b, HLA-DR, CD90, and CD64 revealed significant differences between tissues from patients with RA and acute non-RA arthritis. Especially with the expression of CD64, both patient cohorts could be discriminated with high sensitivity and specificity. RA classification was improved by simultaneously investigating the expression of two or three different surface proteins, such as HLA-DR, CD90, and CD29 in the tissue. The simultaneous analysis of CD64 together with CD304 or the combination of CD11b and CD38 was suitable for the identification of RA patients with high current activity in synovitis.Conclusions
In this study, we showed that LSC is a novel reliable method in biomarker prevalidation in RA. Hence, identified mAbs in situ may allow their potential use in in vivo approaches. Moreover, we proved that biomarker-combination analysis resulted in better discrimination than did single-marker analysis. Combinations of these markers make a novel and reliable panel for the discrimination between RA and acute non-RA arthritis. Phytochromes play an important role in light signaling and photoperiodic control of flowering time in plants. Here we propose that the red/far-red light photoreceptor HvPHYTOCHROME C (HvPHYC), carrying a mutation in a conserved region of the GAF domain, is a candidate underlying the early maturity 5 locus in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). We fine mapped the gene using a mapping-by-sequencing approach applied on the whole-exome capture data from bulked early flowering segregants derived from a backcross of the Bowman(eam5) introgression line. We demonstrate that eam5 disrupts circadian expression of clock genes. Moreover, it interacts with the major photoperiod response gene Ppd-H1 to accelerate flowering under noninductive short days. Our results suggest that HvPHYC participates in transmission of light signals to the circadian clock and thus modulates light-dependent processes such as photoperiodic regulation of flowering. 相似文献

Purpose
To investigate the thickness of the retinal layers and to assess the prevalence of macular microcysts (MM) in the inner nuclear layer (INL) of patients with mitochondrial optic neuropathies (MON).Methods
All patients with molecularly confirmed MON, i.e. Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) and Dominant Optic Atrophy (DOA), referred between 2010 and 2012 were enrolled. Eight patients with MM were compared with two control groups: MON patients without MM matched by age, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, and visual acuity, as well as age-matched controls. Retinal segmentation was performed using specific Optical coherence tomography (OCT) software (Carl Zeiss Meditec). Macular segmentation thickness values of the three groups were compared by one-way analysis of variance with Bonferroni post hoc corrections.Results
MM were identified in 5/90 (5.6%) patients with LHON and 3/58 (5.2%) with DOA. The INL was thicker in patients with MON compared to controls regardless of the presence of MM [133.1±7μm vs 122.3±9μm in MM patients (p<0.01) and 128.5±8μm vs. 122.3±9μm in no-MM patients (p<0.05)], however the outer nuclear layer (ONL) was thicker in patients with MM (101.4±1mμ) compared to patients without MM [77.5±8mμ (p<0.001)] and controls [78.4±7mμ (p<0.001)]. ONL thickness did not significantly differ between patients without MM and controls.Conclusion
The prevalence of MM in MON is low (5-6%), but associated with ONL thickening. We speculate that in MON patients with MM, vitreo-retinal traction contributes to the thickening of ONL as well as to the production of cystic spaces. 相似文献998.

Technicians recorded body condition score (BCS) and several parameters related to estrus and/or metritis for 1694 first insemination cows on 23 farms. Additional variables for modeling the adjusted odds ratios (OR) for pregnancy were data on disease prior to or within 21 days of AI and test day milk yields. Significant predictors for pregnancy were farm, year and season, BCS, uterine tone, contaminated insemination gun after AI, fat-protein corrected kilograms milk (FPCM), days in milk (DIM), and diseases. Vaginal mucus, ease of cervical passage, and lameness were not significant predictors for pregnancy. Pregnancy risk at AI increased with increasing DIM, reaching a near optimum after 82 days. Lack of uterine tone was associated with a lowered pregnancy risk (OR = 0.69) as was contaminated insemination gun (OR = 0.67), first-parity lactation, FPCM >33 kg (OR = 0.71), BCS 2.5 at AI (OR = 0.65), clinical mastitis (OR = 0.53), cystic ovarian disease (OR = 0.53), and metritis (OR = 0.74). It was concluded that data on BCS and uterine findings, as collected by AI technicians, are significant predictors of AI outcome. Dairy producers and veterinarians should jointly examine the potential costs and value of such AI technician-based data to improve herd fertility. 相似文献

Dipterocarpoideae, the largest sub-family of well-known plant family Dipterocarpaceae, dominates in South Asian rain forests. Although several previous studies addressed the phylogeny of the Dipterocarpaceae family, relationships among many of its genera from the Dipterocarpoideae sub-family are still not well understood. In particular, little is known about the relationships of the genera Vateriopsis, Stemonoporus, Vateria and inconsistence remains between phylogenetic results and taxonomic classifications of Shorea and Hopea species. We studied molecular phylogeny of the sub-family Dipterocarpoideae using the trnL-trnF spacer, trnL intron and the matK gene sequences of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA). This study is the first comprehensive phylogeny reconstruction for the sub-family Dipterocarpoideae based on cpDNA, as it includes most genera (14) and a large number of species (79) with most species endemic to Sri Lanka, as well as one species from Seychelles and one species from the genus Monotes from Madagascar. Phylogenetic trees were constructed using the Neighbor Joining (NJ) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) methods using combined set of sequences including all three cpDNA regions. The topologies of the NJ and ML trees were to a certain extent, consistent with the current taxonomy of Dipterocarpoideae based on morphology and with previous molecular phylogenies based on cpDNA. Furthermore, our results provided new evidence regarding the relationships of the following genera: Vateriopsis and Stemonoporus and about the validity of the previous morphology based classifications of Shorea species. In addition, the topology of our trees was consistent with the classification of Shorea species proposed by Maury (1978), Maury-Lechon (1979) and Symington (1943). Finally, our results provided evidence for the affinity of the genus Monotes to Asian Dipterocarpoideae rather than to Tiliaceae and indicated that it is a good candidate for outgroup species for future studies of the former sub-family. 相似文献
