The present work proposes new boundaries for the current submediterranean territories of the Iberian Peninsula, defining them
at the smallest scale attempted to date. The boundaries proposed are not sharp divisions but somewhat ‘gradual’, reflecting
the transitional nature of the territories they encompass. Climate change predictions were used to estimate how the distribution
of these submediterranean regions might change in the near future. The maps constructed are based on the distribution of marcescent
Quercus species—trees that characterise the submediterranean plant landscape where they form the main forest communities. To determine
their climatic range, the distribution of different types of Iberian oak forest was represented in ‘climate diagrams’ (ordination
diagrams derived from principal components analysis), both in terms of individual species and groups of species based on leaf
ecophysiological type, i.e. marcescent (Submediterranean), sclerophyllous (Mediterranean), semideciduous (Mediterranean) and
deciduous (Eurosiberian). The climate range of each type of forest was determined, and the means of representative climate
variables are analysed by one way ANOVA. The variables differentiating the forest groups were also examined by discriminant
analysis. The range of the climate variables found to be associated with the majority of marcescent forests was used to determine
the distribution of territories throughout the Peninsula with the same conditions (i.e. whether marcescent forests were present
or not), thus providing a map of the Iberian submediterranean territories. Predictions of climate change were used to investigate
possible climate-induced modifications in the boundaries of these territories in the near future. The patterns obtained show
dramatic reductions in the extension of the Iberian submediterranean environment. Submediterranean conditions will probably
disappear from the areas where they currently reign, and it seems unlikely that any new, large submediterranean areas will
form by displacement towards higher altitudes. The outlook for the unique submediterranean vegetation of the Iberian Peninsula
is gloomy.

The temperature sensitivity of in vitro whole bladder preparations from neonatal and adult rats with or without chronic partial urethral obstruction was investigated. After the bladder was filled to a volume eliciting isovolumetric contractions, temperature was changed between 19 and 38 degrees C. In all preparations, higher temperatures were associated with higher frequencies of spontaneous intravesical pressure waves (IVPW). In 1- to 2-wk-old neonates, IVPW amplitude increased as the temperature increased; however, in older neonates and normal adults, the opposite occurred. The transition period was at 3 wk of age when bladder volume also markedly increased. At this age as well as in adult rats with outlet obstruction, changing temperature had little influence on the amplitude of IVPW. Thus obstructed outlet bladders and 3-wk-old bladders had similar properties. It is concluded that the properties of bladder muscle are changed during postnatal maturation and that in 3-wk-old rats, when brain control of voiding is emerging, micturition is abnormal, leading to obstructive changes in bladder muscle. 相似文献

The ligand specificity of the alpha 3A beta 1 integrin was analyzed using K562 cells transfected with full-length alpha 3A cDNA and was compared with that of alpha 6A beta 1 in similarly transfected K562 cells. Clones were obtained that showed comparable surface expression of either alpha 3A beta 1 or alpha 6A beta 1 integrins. Those expressing alpha 3A beta 1 attached to and spread on immunopurified human kalinin and cellular matrices containing human kalinin, which is a particular isoform of laminin. In addition, alpha 3A transfectants adhered to bovine kidney laminins possessing a novel A chain variant. Binding to kalinin was blocked by a monoclonal antibody against the A chain constituent of kalinin and adhesion to both kalinin and kidney laminins by anti-alpha 3 and beta 1 monoclonal antibodies. The alpha 3A transfected cells bound more strongly to kalinin and bovine kidney laminins after treatment with the beta 1 stimulatory antibody TS2/16. A distinctly weaker and activation-dependent adhesion of alpha 3A transfectants was observed on human placental laminins possessing the Am chain variant (merosin), and no adhesion occurred on bovine heart laminins and murine EHS tumor laminin. Further inactive substrates were fibronectin, nidogen, and collagen types IV and VI, indicating that the alpha 3A beta 1 integrin is a much less promiscuous receptor than thought before. By contrast, alpha 6A transfected cells adhered to all laminin isoforms when stimulated with TS2/16. Adhesion also occurred only on bovine kidney laminins in the absence of TS2/16. These results demonstrate that both alpha 3A beta 1 and alpha 6A beta 1 integrins are typical laminin receptors but that their affinity and activation dependence for binding to various laminin isoforms differ considerably. 相似文献

The storage of glucose in insoluble granules is a distinctive feature of plant cells. Biosynthesis of amylose, the minor low molecular mass fraction of starch occurs from ADP-glucose. This takes place within the polysaccharide matrix through the action of granule-bound starch synthase, the major protein associated with the granule. Recently, amylose has been successfully synthesized in vitro from purified granules. Two models have been proposed to explain the mechanism of amylose synthesis in plants. The first calls for priming of synthesis through small-size malto-oligosaccharides. The second suggests that glucans are extended by granule-bound starch synthase from a high molecular mass primer present within the granule. This extension is terminated through cleavage to produce amylose. This process is subsequently repeated to give several rounds of amylose synthesis. 相似文献

of the water, and shows an inverse exponential relationship with this factor. The filtration activity is temperature indifferent
between approx. 5 and 20 °C. At low temperatures the filtration rate drops abruptly, at high temperatures gradual inhibition
occurs. The filtration rate shows a sigmoidal relation with the length of the mussel. The largestD. polymorpha have a diminished filtration rate compared to animals of smaller size. This might be a degenerative feature of the oldest
mussels. In Lake Wolderwijd a population density of 675 per m2 is required to compensate phytoplankton growth by grazing. Manipulation of the size of the population can be executed by

The vasorelaxant effect of synthetic atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) on the vascular response to angiotensin II (A II) and norepinephrine (NE) in aortic rings from Bufo arenarum toad was studied. 2. Pretreatment with ANP partially inhibited the vascular response to A II and NE. 3. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) treatment partially inhibited the contractile response of angiotensin I (A I) and did not affect the A II response. 4. Mycoplasma hominis is an opportunistic human mycoplasma. Two other pathogenic human species, M. genitalium and Ureaplasma parvum, reside within the same natural niche as M. hominis: the urogenital tract. These three species have overlapping, but distinct, pathogenic roles. They have minimal genomes and, thus, reduced metabolic capabilities characterized by distinct energy-generating pathways. Analysis of the M. hominis PG21 genome sequence revealed that it is the second smallest genome among self-replicating free living organisms (665,445 bp, 537 coding sequences (CDSs)). Five clusters of genes were predicted to have undergone horizontal gene transfer (HGT) between M. hominis and the phylogenetically distant U. parvum species. We reconstructed M. hominis metabolic pathways from the predicted genes, with particular emphasis on energy-generating pathways. The Embden–Meyerhoff–Parnas pathway was incomplete, with a single enzyme absent. We identified the three proteins constituting the arginine dihydrolase pathway. This pathway was found essential to promote growth in vivo. The predicted presence of dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase suggested that arginine catabolism is more complex than initially described. This enzyme may have been acquired by HGT from non-mollicute bacteria. Comparison of the three minimal mollicute genomes showed that 247 CDSs were common to all three genomes, whereas 220 CDSs were specific to M. hominis, 172 CDSs were specific to M. genitalium, and 280 CDSs were specific to U. parvum. Within these species-specific genes, two major sets of genes could be identified: one including genes involved in various energy-generating pathways, depending on the energy source used (glucose, urea, or arginine) and another involved in cytadherence and virulence. Therefore, a minimal mycoplasma cell, not including cytadherence and virulence-related genes, could be envisaged containing a core genome (247 genes), plus a set of genes required for providing energy.
