Parasites often confront conflicting demands when evaluating and distributing themselves among host individuals, in order to attain maximum reproductive success. We tested two alternative hypotheses about host preference by fleas in relation to the age of their rodent host. The first hypothesis suggests that fleas select adult over juvenile rodents because the latter represent a better nutritional resource (the “well-fed host” hypothesis), whereas the second hypothesis suggests that fleas prefer the weaker and less resistant juveniles because they are easier to colonise and exploit (“poorly fed host” hypothesis). We sampled fleas (Synosternus cleopatrae) on the gerbil (Gerbillus andersoni) in 23 different plots in the Negev desert and found an unequal distribution of fleas between adult and juvenile hosts. Furthermore, flea distribution changed as a function of flea density—from juvenile-biased flea parasitism (the “poorly fed host” hypothesis) at low densities to adult-biased flea parasitism (the “well-fed host” hypothesis) at high densities. Other factors that influenced flea preference were soil temperature and the presence of ticks. These results suggest that host selection is not an explicit alternative choice between adults and juveniles (“well-fed host” versus “poorly fed host” hypotheses), but rather a continuum where the distribution between adults and juveniles depends on host, parasite, and environmentally related factors.  相似文献

Grooming behaviour plays various roles in the health care, reproduction, and social life of an individual vertebrate. However, the reasons for the variability in time spent grooming amongst species, populations and individuals are not fully understood. We tested the hypothesis that the main role of grooming is ectoparasite removal and thus that time spent grooming by an animal reflects the costs of parasite infestation offset against the costs of grooming. The test was conducted on a rodent, Meriones crassus, that is parasitised by a flea, Xenopsylla conformis. We monitored behaviour of juvenile and adult rodents before and after flea infestation and quantified the probability of mortality of fleas with respect to the time spent grooming in adults compared with juvenile rodents. We predicted that: (1) increased costs of flea infestation (e.g. in parasitised as opposed to flea‐free rodents and in juveniles as opposed to adults) increases time spent grooming and (2) mortality probability per flea increases with increasing time spent grooming and is higher for fleas on juveniles than for fleas on adult rodents. We were interested to discover at the expense of which activity grooming is increased. Our findings established that the major role of grooming is in flea removal, as exposure to fleas evoked grooming activity in all rodents and grooming activity explained 57–70% of the variation in flea mortality. Furthermore, we showed that the rise in grooming activity was at the expense of resting. However, we found only partial support for the predicted increase in grooming time with increasing costs of flea infestation. Flea infestation did indeed increase the time spent grooming by rodents. Nevertheless, juvenile rodents who incur higher costs of flea infestation spent less time grooming than adults and sustained similar flea densities, suggesting that these hosts are constrained by some other factors, such as feeding time.  相似文献

Species utilizing a wide range of resources are intuitively expected to be less efficient in exploiting each resource type compared to species which have developed an optimal phenotype for utilizing only one or a few resources. We report here the results of an empirical study whose aim was to test for a negative association between habitat niche breadth and foraging performance. As a model system to address this question, we used two highly abundant species of pit-building antlions varying in their habitat niche breadth: the habitat generalist Myrmeleon hyalinus, which inhabits a variety of soil types but occurs mainly in sandy soils, and the habitat specialist Cueta lineosa, which is restricted to light soils such as loess. Both species were able to discriminate between the two soils, with each showing a distinct and higher preference to the soil type providing higher prey capture success and characterizing its primary habitat-of-origin. As expected, only small differences in the foraging performances of the habitat generalist were evident between the two soils, while the performance of the habitat specialist was markedly reduced in the alternative sandy soil. Remarkably, in both soil types, the habitat generalist constructed pits and responded to prey faster than the habitat specialist, at least under the temperature range of this study. Furthermore, prey capture success of the habitat generalist was higher than that of the habitat specialist irrespective of the soil type or prey ant species encountered, implying a positive association between habitat niche-breadth and foraging performance. Alternatively, C. lineosa specialization to light soils does not necessarily confer upon its superiority in utilizing such habitats. We thus suggest that habitat specialization in C. lineosa is either an evolutionary dead-end, or, more likely, that this species' superiority in light soils can only be evident when considering additional niche axes.  相似文献

Neural responses to antigenic challenges and immunomodulatory factors   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In studies designed to examine the effects of the immune system, recordings of multi-unit electrical activity (MUA) in the central nervous system were made in the preoptic area/anterior hypothalamus (POA/AH) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of rats, following sheep red blood cell (SRBC) immunization. Peak increases in POA/AH MUA were observed on the fifth day following SRBC sensitization, the day on which serum antibodies were first detected. A significant increase in paraventricular nucleus (PVN) MUA was also observed on the sixth day. These changes in POA/AH and PVN MUA were found to be associated with increased plasma corticosterone levels on day 8. Induction of a second immune response to SRBC evoked a POA/AH MUA increase of extended duration but reduced amplitude, while administration of the immunosuppressive drug, cyclophosphamide, prevented both antibody generation and any increases in POA/AH MUA. These data suggest that activation of the immune system may provide signals, in the form of chemical messengers, which are able to alter neural activity in some regions of the brain that are important in neuroendocrine regulatory mechanisms. Accordingly, intracerebroventricular injections of thymic humoral factor or alpha-interferon decreased POA/AH MUA, increased EEG synchronization, and decreased plasma levels of corticosterone. Histamine and interleukin 1 did not alter POA/AH MUA but decreased EEG synchronization and increased plasma levels of corticosterone.  相似文献

In order to succeed in crossing extensive ecological barriers, migratory birds usually deposit fuel en route. High rates of fuel deposition may enable birds to shorten their total migration time and are therefore advantageous for time-minimizing migrants. Several studies have suggested that water provision may increase food utilization in non-migratory birds. The goal of this study was to test the influence of water availability on the fuel deposition of en route migratory passerines. We studied fuel deposition of blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla and lesser whitethroats S. curruca staging in a plantation of Mount Atlas gum-tree Pistacia atlantica in the northern Negev desert, Israel, during the autumns of 2000 and 2002. We manipulated water availability at the site and measured the effect of water supplementation on fuel deposition of birds of both species. We found that when water was available, blackcaps had higher fuel loads and higher fuel deposition rates than during control trials. However, water availability had no effect on fuel deposition of lesser whitethroats. Species-specific differences in adaptations to arid conditions, reflected in the species' winter habitat preferences, may be responsible for the between-species dissimilarity in responding to water provision. We suggest that water availability may have strong ecological and evolutionary consequences for birds migrating through arid environments, by its possible effect on bird behavior and physiology.  相似文献

Ontogenetic changes in color and pattern that are not directlyrelated to reproduction are very common yet remain a poorlyunderstood phenomenon. One example is conspicuous colors inthe tails of fish, amphibians, and reptiles that fade out laterin life. We suggest a novel hypothesis: conspicuous tail colorsthat appear only in juveniles compensate for an increased activitylevel, deflecting imminent attacks to the tail. We observedblue-tailed, newly hatched lizards (Acanthodactylus beershebensis)in the field and compared 5 behavioral parameters with thoseof older individuals that had already lost their neonate coloration. In addition, we explored whether tail displays, often assumedto direct a predator's attention to the tail, disappear withthe color change. Striped blue-tailed hatchlings foraged moreactively than 3-week-old juveniles, spent a longer time in openmicrohabitats, and performed deflective tail displays. In comparison,2 other lacertids that do not undergo ontogenetic change didnot switch to safer foraging when growing up. The results suggestthat activity alteration may be a major factor affecting theontogenetic color and pattern change. Active lizards that foragein open habitats increase their probability of attack by ambushpredators. Conspicuous colors and deflection displays may shiftattacks to the expendable tail, increasing the prey's overallprobability of surviving attacks. The persistence of both stripedbody pattern and blue tail fits the active foraging period ofneonates and hence may be appropriate for other species thatdisplay a conspicuous tail accompanied by a striped pattern.  相似文献

This study characterizes cadmium (Cd) uptake by the waterlily Nymphaea aurora, (Nymphaeaceae) in two systems: a model hydroponic Cd solution and heavily polluted sludge from two sites in Israel. The uptake of Cd from hydroponic solution resulted in Cd storage in petioles and laminae of Nymphaea, as well as in the roots. The pH of the solution affected Cd solubility and availability, with pH 5.5 yielding maximum Cd content in the plant (140 mg Cd per g DW). Cd uptake was reduced by the addition of EDTA to the hydroponic growth medium, although EDTA enhanced heavy metal uptake by terrestrial plants. Nymphaea efficiently reduced the concentration of Cd in heavy metal polluted urban and industrial sludge and the amount of Cd uptake was enhanced by the addition of KCl to the sludge and by adjustment of the pH to 5.5. The inherent growth patterns of Nymphaea plants allowed Cd uptake by the shoot and root, and resulted in maximum contact between the various plant parts and the growth media. Thus, Nymphaea has potential as an optimal, highly effective phytoremediation tool for the removal of Cd from polluted waste sources.  相似文献

Density-dependent habitat selection in plants   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Pea plants exhibit density-dependent habitat selection as they grow. We split the root of a young pea (Pisum sativum L.) so that half grew in one pot and half in an adjacent pot. The rest of the plant remained intact. This is a ‘fence-sitter plant’. Each root-half was exposed either to no competition in its pot or to competitor plants sharing its pot. There were one, two, three or five competitor plants. The total root biomass and the fitness (= dry weight of fruit) of the fence-sitter decreased only slightly and insignificantly in response to increased density of the competitor plants. The fitness of the competing plants decreased with density. The fence-sitter shifted its root system from the pot with competition to that free of competition in proportion to the number of competitors. The fence-sitter apparently invested in each of its two roots so that the ratio between the roots was similar to the ratio between the resources in the pots. This result is analogous to the habitat-matching rule of the ideal free distribution of populations (Fretwell, 1972). We suggest that plants invest in each of their roots until the uptake rate per unit root biomass is equal for all roots. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
