The formation of L-3-phosphoglyceric acid by ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase

A sensitive and reliable method to determine the stereochemical composition of 3-phosphoglyceric acid is presented. Results obtained with this method show that 3-phosphoglyceric acid formed in the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase reaction is a mixture of 10% L-3-PGA and 90% D-3-PGA.     

A simple integrative electrophysiological model of bursting GnRH neurons

In this paper a modular model of the GnRH neuron is presented. For the aim of simplicity, the currents corresponding to fast time scales and action potential generation are described by an impulsive system, while the slower currents and calcium dynamics are described by usual ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The model is able to reproduce the depolarizing afterpotentials, afterhyperpolarization, periodic bursting behavior and the corresponding calcium transients observed in the case of GnRH neurons.     

The mannoprotein of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an effective bioemulsifier

The mannoprotein which is a major component of the cell wall of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an effective bioemulsifier. Mannoprotein emulsifier was extracted in a high yield from whole cells of fresh bakers' yeast by two methods, by autoclaving in neutral citrate buffer and by digestion with Zymolase (Miles Laboratories; Toronto, Ontario, Canada), a beta-1,3-glucanase. Heat-extracted emulsifier was purified by ultrafiltration and contained approximately 44% carbohydrate (mannose) and 17% protein. Treatment of the emulsifier with protease eliminated emulsification. Kerosene-in-water emulsions were stabilized over a broad range of conditions, from pH 2 to 11, with up to 5% sodium chloride or up to 50% ethanol in the aqueous phase. In the presence of a low concentration of various solutes, emulsions were stable to three cycles of freezing and thawing. An emulsifying agent was extracted from each species or strain of yeast tested, including 13 species of genera other than Saccharomyces. Spent yeast from the manufacture of beer and wine was demonstrated to be a possible source for the large-scale production of this bioemulsifier.

Electrophysiological characteristics of cardiac pacemaker cells of the frog Caudiverbera caudiverbera

1. The cardiac pacemaker cells of the frog Caudiverbera caudiverbera are centrally located in the sinus venosus. These cells are rounded, smaller than contractile fibres and have large nuclei. 2. Intracellular recording confirmed the existence of primary and transitional pacemaker cells. 3. Action potentials from primary cells were resistant to blockade by tetrodotoxin (TTX), but were abolished by verapamil suggesting that their bioelectric activity is dependent on a slow inward current. 4. Transitional cells appeared to have two different inward currents contributing to the upstroke: a fast TTX-sensitive and a slow verapamil-sensitive current.     

Effect of feeding pattern on the sensitivity of hepatic carnitine palmitoyl-transferase to inhibition by malonyl-CoA in the rat

1. The feeding pattern influences the inhibitory effects of malonyl-CoA on carnitine palmitoyltransferase-I. 2. The sensitivity of liver carnitine palmitoyltransferase-I to malonyl-CoA is increased in rats meal-fed when compared to rats fed ad libitum. 3. Moreover, liver carnitine palmitoyltransferase-I of meal-fed rats remains more sensitive to inhibition by malonyl-CoA during a 24 hour fast than liver carnitine palmitoyltransferase-I of rats previously fed ad libitum.
