Abstract: A lower jaw with multicusped teeth and a number of unique characteristics was discovered in an extensive exposure of the Upper Triassic Kössen Formation in the Northern Calcareous Alps. The ramus of the jaw is high and dominated by a row of large, oval foramina that lies parallel to the tooth row. In addition, the anterior portion of the dentary exhibits a large number of nutritive foramina and small pits, which might indicate an association with a soft tissue structure and/or the presence of a keratinous cover of that area during life. All elements of the jaw are thin-walled and hollow, possibly pneumatic. Two teeth are preserved within the dentary. One is tricuspid and the other bears four cuSPS. The teeth are noticeably small in comparison with the overall size of the ramus, being only one-third of the height of the ramus. The teeth show a strong similarity to those of the well-known basal pterosaur genus Eudimorphodon , whose jaw morphology, however, clearly differs from the specimen described in this study. The dentition and the pneumatic bone structure make an assignment to the Pterosauria plausible. A 5‐month survey was conducted in Eritrea with the aim of collecting information on the distribution and habitats of primate species, including grivet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops aethiops). The survey area covered more than 22 000 km2 (N 14°17′?16°19′, E 37°13′?39°53′). Grivet monkey habitats were described by altitude, precipitation, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), vegetation classes and distances to nearest settlements and rivers. We detected grivet monkeys at 44 sites, making Eritrea probably the northern most range of the current grivet monkey distribution. Average group size was 9.1. Grivet monkeys were, at different sites, sympatric with either hamadryas (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) or olive (P. h. anubis) baboons. Grivet ‘home‐ranges’ had a NDVI significantly higher than the average of the area of survey (AoS), and the proportion of wooded and forested areas within the ‘home‐ranges’ was also greater than the average of the AoS. Of all grivet monkey records in Eritrea, 63.7% were closer than 1500 m to the nearest river or riverbed, indicating the importance of riverine forest and woodland for grivet monkeys in the otherwise arid habitats. Conflicts between humans and grivet monkeys were reported from almost every site because both use the riverine habitats extensively. In 37.2% of the cases, the distance between a grivet monkey record and the nearest agricultural area (>5 ha) was less than 500 m and 31.8% of the monkey sites were found within 1000 m of the nearest village. An increasing human population (especially due to resettlement projects for refugees) and an intensification of agricultural activities, particularly in the riverine habitats through modern irrigation techniques, is likely to increase the conflict and will probably have a negative impact on the grivet monkey population in Eritrea. 相似文献

The Leapfrog Group, a consortium of more than 100 large employers, purchasing coalitions, and states that collectively provide health insurance to more than 33 million people, convened in 2000 with the goal of using market forces to improve the quality of healthcare. The resulting Leapfrog initiative suggested selective referral of complex procedures to high-volume hospitals and set volume thresholds for five procedures. This was based on the hypothesis that low-volume hospitals have higher mortality, which can be viewed in simplified statistical terms as the hypothesis that the binomial p is a decreasing function of n. The analysis of the correlation between hospitals' standardized mortality ratios (SMR, i.e., the ratio of observed to expected deaths) and hospitals' procedural volumes is revealing about the volume/mortality hypothesis. This presents an unusual pedagogic example in which the detection of correlation in the presence of nonlinear dependence is of primary interest, and thus the Pearson correlation is ideally suited. Background
Baboons of the genus Papio are distributed over wide ranges of Africa and even colonized parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Traditionally, five phenotypically distinct species are recognized, but recent molecular studies were not able to resolve their phylogenetic relationships. Moreover, these studies revealed para- and polyphyletic (hereafter paraphyletic) mitochondrial clades for baboons from eastern Africa, and it was hypothesized that introgressive hybridization might have contributed substantially to their evolutionary history. To further elucidate the phylogenetic relationships among baboons, we extended earlier studies by analysing the complete mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and the 'Brown region' from 67 specimens collected at 53 sites, which represent all species and which cover most of the baboons' range. 相似文献126.

Eight new species in seven new genera of follicular fruits are described from the Late Cretaceous of southern Sweden. They are Agapitocarpus emisxus , Chontrocarpus pachytoichus , Maiandrocarpus moirasmenus , Malliocarpus batrachoides , Mitocarpus elegans , Xylocarpus rhitidoides , Zeugarocarpus adroagathus and Z. leptoagathus . The fossil follicles are borne along infructescence axes or more commonly occur as isolated, dispersed fruits. Three genera, Maiandrocarpus , Mitocarpus and Zeugarocarpus , have follicles in distinct pairs borne spirally on an infructescence axis. Each follicle of a pair faces the axis with its ventral slit, which strongly indicates that the paired follicles were derived from two separate, monocarpellate flowers rather than from a single, bicarpellate flower. One genus ( Malliocarpus ) has follicles borne individually in the infructescence and three others ( Agapitocarpus , Chontrocarpus and Xylocarpus ) are known only as dispersed follicles. The paired follicles share many features with most of the dispersed follicles, including a sessile stigmatic area, a three-layered simple follicle wall, a simple vascular system composed of one dorsal and two lateral bundles, as well as a marginal-linear placentation bearing several anatropous ovules. Accordingly they are thought to belong to the same complex of taxa. In diverse plant communities the relative contribution of species to community biomass may change considerably in response to elevated CO2. Along with species‐specific biomass responses, reproduction is likely to change as well with increasing CO2 and might further accelerate shifts in species composition. Here, we ask if, after 5 years of CO2 exposure, seed production and seed quality in natural nutrient‐poor calcareous grassland are affected by elevated CO2 (650 μ L L?1 vs 360 μ L L?1) and how this might affect long‐term community dynamics. The effect of elevated CO2 on the number of flowering shoots (+ 24%, P < 0.01) and seeds (+ 29%, P = 0.06) at the community level was similar to above ground biomass responses in this year, suggesting that the overall allocation to sexual reproduction remained unchanged. Compared among functional groups of species we found a 42% increase in seed number (P < 0.01) of graminoids, a 33% increase (P = 0.07) in forbs, and no significant change in legumes (? 38%, n.s.) under elevated CO2. Large responses particularly of two graminoid species and smaller responses of many forb species summed up to the significant or marginally significant increase in seed number of graminoids and forbs, respectively. In several species the increase in seed number resulted both from an increase in flowering shoots and an increase in inflorescence size. In most species, seeds tended to be heavier (+ 12%, P < 0.01), and N‐concentration of seeds was significantly reduced in eight out of 13 species. The fraction of germinating seeds did not differ between seeds produced in ambient and elevated CO2, but time to germination was significantly shortened in two species and prolonged in one species when seeds had been produced in elevated CO2. Results suggest that species specific increases in seed number and changes in seed quality will exert substantial cumulative effects on community composition in the long run. 相似文献

Pair‐living and a monogamous mating strategy are rare and theoretically unexpected among mammals. Nevertheless, about 10% of primate species exhibit such a social system, which is difficult to explain in the absence of paternal care. In this study, we investigated the two major hypotheses proposed to explain the evolution of monogamy in mammals, the female defence hypothesis (FDH) and the resource defence hypothesis (RDH), in red‐tailed sportive lemurs (Lepilemur ruficaudatus), a nocturnal primate from Madagascar. We analysed behavioural data from eight male–female pairs collected during a 24‐mo field study to illuminate the determinants of pair‐living in this species. Male and female L. ruficaudatus were found to live in dispersed pairs, which are characterised by low cohesion and low encounter rates within a common home range. Social interactions between pair partners were mainly agonistic and characterised by a complete absence of affiliative interactions – body contact was only observed during mating. During the short annual mating season, males exhibited elevated levels of aggression towards mates, as well as extensive mate guarding and increased locomotor activity. In addition, males were exclusively responsible for the maintenance of proximity between pair partners during this period, and they defended their territories against neighbouring males but not against females. Together, these results point towards the importance of female defence in explaining pair‐living in L. ruficaudatus. We discuss the spatial and temporal distribution of receptive females in relation to the female defence strategies of males and suggest possible costs that prevent male red‐tailed sportive lemurs from defending more than one female. 相似文献

Seed dispersal is a key ecological process in tropical forests, with effects on various levels ranging from plant reproductive success to the carbon storage potential of tropical rainforests. On a local and landscape scale, spatial patterns of seed dispersal create the template for the recruitment process and thus influence the population dynamics of plant species. The strength of this influence will depend on the long‐term consistency of spatial patterns of seed dispersal. We examined the long‐term consistency of spatial patterns of seed dispersal with spatially explicit data on seed dispersal by two neotropical primate species, Leontocebus nigrifrons and Saguinus mystax (Callitrichidae), collected during four independent studies between 1994 and 2013. Using distributions of dispersal probability over distances independent of plant species, cumulative dispersal distances, and kernel density estimates, we show that spatial patterns of seed dispersal are highly consistent over time. For a specific plant species, the legume Parkia panurensis, the convergence of cumulative distributions at a distance of 300 m, and the high probability of dispersal within 100 m from source trees coincide with the dimension of the spatial–genetic structure on the embryo/juvenile (300 m) and adult stage (100 m), respectively, of this plant species. Our results are the first demonstration of long‐term consistency of spatial patterns of seed dispersal created by tropical frugivores. Such consistency may translate into idiosyncratic patterns of regeneration. 相似文献
