Lipid raft-regulated IGF-1R activation antagonizes TRAIL-induced apoptosis in gastric cancer cells

Gastric cancer cells are resistant to tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and the resistance mechanism is not fully understood. In human gastric cancer MGC803 and BGC823 cells, TRAIL induces insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) pathway activation. Treatment with IGF-1R inhibitor OSI-906 or small interfering RNAs against IGF-1R, prevents IGF-1R pathway activation and increases TRAIL-induced apoptosis. The TRAIL-induced IGF-1R pathway activation is promoted by IGF-1R translocation into lipid rafts. Moreover, the translocation of IGF-1R into lipid rafts is regulated by Casitas B-lineage lymphoma b (Cbl-b). Taken together, TRAIL-induced IGF-1R activation antagonizes TRAIL-induced apoptosis by Cbl-b-regulated distribution of IGF-1R in lipid rafts.

Calcium carbonate-methylene blue nanohybrids for photodynamic therapy and ultrasound imaging

Photodynamic therapy plays an important role in cancer treatment. In this work, methylene blue (MB)-embedded calcium carbonate nanorods (CaCO₃-MB NRs) have been synthesized for pH-responsive photodynamic therapy and ultrasound imaging. The morphology of CaCO₃-MB NRs can be controlled by modulating the concentration of Na₂CO₃ aqueous solution. The generation of effective reactive oxygen species (ROS) were confirmed by 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran (DPBF) probe. Both photodynamic therapy performance and echogenic performance of CaCO₃-MB NRs were investigated to confirm the feasibility of CaCO₃-MB nanohybrids for ultrasound image-guided photodynamic therapy.     

Genetic Diversity,Population Genetic Structure and Protection Strategies for <Emphasis Type="Italic">Houpoëa officinalis</Emphasis> (Magnoliaceae), an Endangered Chinese Medical Plant

Houpoëa officinalis is a traditional Chinese medical plant, which has significantly declined in the past decades because of human influence and habitat fragmentation. Twelve expressed sequence tag SSR (EST-SSR) markers developed from the EST sequence of H. officinalis were used to analyse the genetic diversity and structure of fourteen natural populations. The results indicated that moderate genetic diversity and high genetic differentiation existed in this plant (Ho = 0.600, Fst = 0.327). STRUCTURE and UPGMA analyses showed that H. officinalis populations could be divided into 3 different groups, and the west group had higher genetic diversity than the central and east groups. The historical migration rates among the groups were low and unsymmetrical, and there was no significant correlation between Nei’s genetic distance and geographic distance. According to the genetic consequences, conservation strategies (in situ or ex situ, artificial pollination) should be carried out in all populations to preserve genetic diversity.     

阴山山脉天然侧柏林的基本特征

阴山山脉是中国天然侧柏(Platycladus orientalis)林分布的西北界, 侧柏林也是阴山山脉最主要的森林群落之一。它具有较好的固坡、保土、涵养水源及改善生境的作用。为了解阴山山脉天然侧柏林种群、群落特征和空间分布规律以更好地为侧柏林的经营提供理论依据, 我们以阴山山脉大青山及乌拉山段天然侧柏林为研究对象, 通过样方调查, 分析了侧柏林的植物区系特征, 并根据群落各层片物种优势度将该区侧柏林划分为6个群丛类型, 分析了各群丛特征及其空间分布的生态序列。结果表明: (1)阴山山脉天然侧柏林群落共出现维管植物96种, 隶属于30科70属, 种的地理成分包括8个类型18个亚型, 其中东古北极分布最多, 其次为东亚分布; (2)从群落结构分析, 发育良好的侧柏群落表现为完整的乔木层和草本层, 灌木盖度普遍偏低, 基本不能成层, 在干扰较为严重的地段甚至消失; (3)各群丛侧柏的径级结构基本呈正态分布, 属于稳定的群落类型, 侧柏的平均株高随胸径的增大整体呈增长型; (4)该区侧柏林受干扰较严重, 加之严酷的生境条件, 建群种侧柏的平均胸径较小且植株分叉较多, 不适合作为用材林, 建议将其作为生态公益林及种源林加以保护利用。
