Eight hydroxyl-substituted Schiff bases with the different number and position of hydroxyl group on the two asymmetric aromatic rings (A and B rings) were prepared by the reaction between the corresponding aromatic aldehyde and aniline. Their antioxidant effects against the stable galvinoxyl radical (GO) in ethyl acetate and methanol, and 2,2′-azobis(2-amidinopropane hydrochloride) (AAPH)-induced DNA strand breakage, and their antiproliferative effects on human hepatoma HepG2 cells, were investigated. Structure–activity relationship analysis demonstrates that o-dihydroxyl groups on the aromatic A ring and 4-hydroxyl group attached to the aromatic B ring contribute critically to the antioxidant and antiproliferative activities. 相似文献

Flowering time is one of important agronomic traits determining the crop yield and affected by high temperature. When facing high ambient temperature, plants often initiate early flowering as an adaptive strategy to escape the stress and ensure successful reproduction. However, here we find opposing ways in the short-day crop soybean to respond to different levels of high temperatures, in which flowering accelerates when temperature changes from 25 to 30 °C, but delays when temperature reaches 35 °C under short day. phyA-E1, possibly photoperiodic pathway, is crucial for 35 °C-mediated late flowering, however, does not contribute to promoting flowering at 30 °C. 30 °C-induced up-regulation of FT2a and FT5a leads to early flowering, independent of E1. We hypothesized that disrupted alveolarization and lung vascular growth caused by brief perinatal hypoxia would predispose infant rats to higher risk for developing pulmonary hypertension when reexposed to hypoxia. Pregnant rats were exposed to 11% inspired oxygen fraction (barometric pressure, 410 mmHg; inspired oxygen pressure, 76 mmHg) for 3 days before birth and were maintained in hypoxia for 3 days after birth. Control rats were born and raised in room air. At 2 wk of age, rats from both groups were exposed to hypoxia for 1 wk or kept in room air. We found that brief perinatal hypoxia resulted in a greater increase in right ventricular systolic pressure and higher ratio of right ventricle to left ventricle plus septum weights after reexposure to hypoxia after 2 wk of age. Moreover, perinatal hypoxic rats had decreased radial alveolar counts and reduced pulmonary artery density. We conclude that brief perinatal hypoxia increases the severity of pulmonary hypertension when rats are reexposed to hypoxia. We speculate that disrupted alveolarization and lung vascular growth following brief perinatal hypoxia may increase the risk for severe pulmonary hypertension with exposure to adverse stimuli later in life. 相似文献

Because they share common precursors and require significant amounts of energy, photosynthesis and defense against herbivores and pathogens may be inversely related. This relationship was examined in Arabidopsis thaliana exposed to herbivory by Trichoplusia ni neonates. The spatial pattern of photosynthesis was compared statistically with that of induction of the defense-related cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H) gene across individual leaves exposed to herbivory in transgenic plants harboring a C4H:GUS gene fusion. In portions of the leaf where C4H:GUS expression was upregulated, photosynthesis was depressed, while non-photochemical quenching was increased, suggesting a trade-off between these two processes. However, photosynthetic damage spread further into surrounding areas than the induction of C4H:GUS expression. Photosynthetic depression was observed up to 1 mm from the edges of holes, whereas C4H:GUS induction typically was limited to about 0.5 mm or less from edges. Other mechanisms may be responsible for the spread of photosynthetic damage beyond where C4H-related defense was induced. Alternatively, C4H induction may reflect a subset of defensive responses more limited in their spatial distribution than the downregulation of photosynthesis. A new method for hydrolyzing steroid conjugates (both sulfates and glucuronides conjugates) that is efficient, effective, and inexpensive is described. This method comprises incubation of the conjugates--after salting-out into ethyl acetate or elution from a C18 cartridge--with anhydrous methanolic hydrogen chloride (methanolysis) for 10 min. It has been successfully applied to our routine radioimmunoassay screening and GC/MS confirmation studies of steroids in prerace and postrace equine urine samples. Comparative GC/MS studies on entire (male horse) urine samples showed that methanolysis gave amounts of free steroids (estrone, estradiols, testosterone, estrenediols, nandrolone, androstanediols) at least as large as those obtained by solvolysis. Similar studies on urine samples from a gelding that had been administered nandrolone phenylpropionate showed that methanolysis gave larger amounts of free steroids (nandrolone, estranediols) than Helix pomatia enzymatic hydrolysis or solvolysis. Also, TLC studies on methanolysis of corticosteroid conjugates such as hydrocortisone 21-sulfate and hydrocortisone 21-phosphate showed that free corticosteroid was released in 5 min. 相似文献
