We tested whether mountain pine beetles Dendroctonus ponderosae, an insect herbivore that exhibits outbreak population dynamics, modifies its habitat selection behaviour in response to density‐dependent environmental shifts. Using an individual‐based habitat selection model, we formulated predictions of how beetle population density will influence breeding habitat selectivity. Our model predicted that beetles should be more selective at intermediate densities than at low or high densities. The mechanisms influencing optimal selectivity differed between low and high density populations. In low density populations, breeding site availability was the primary factor affecting selectivity, whereas intraspecific competition and the reliability of habitat quality cues were important in high density populations. We tested our model predictions in natural populations that encompassed a range of beetle population densities. Our empirical findings supported the two key predictions from our model. First, habitat quality was more variable in high density populations. Second, individuals in high density populations were less selective compared to beetles from intermediate density populations. Our results demonstrate that beetles alter their habitat selection behaviour in response to density‐dependent shifts. We propose that the behavioural changes we identified may influence the rate at which beetle populations transition between density states.  相似文献

The frog retina was stimulated with light flashes homogeneous in space but not time. The time heterogeneity of stimulation was created by abrupt change of a referent stimulus for a stimulus with different luminance. Such changes form a time pattern, as well as sharp borders of luminance between the neighbor areas of the visual field form a spatial pattern. The electroretinogram recorded in response to presentation of a triad of stimuli: the onset of a short flash of homogeneous light after long dark (or light) adaptation of a retina, brief sequence of the referent and test light flashes varied in luminance, and the offset, with returning to the initial level of adaptation. It was shown that responses of the retina under conditions of time heterogeneity of stimulation could be divided in two types as well as under conditions of spatial heterogeneity. Such a dual change in amplitude confirms our earlier hypothesis on the existence of two mechanisms of luminance coding in the frog retina. The first mechanism encodes power characteristics of light, it forms the information on the absolute level of the environmental luminance. Its activity is connected basically with receptors and cells of the external plexiform layer of the frog's retina. It is responsible for the b-wave of the electroretinogram. The other mechanism associated with RERG is based on a vector code of stimuli. This mechanism forms the information on spatial and time differentiation of the light flow in the visual field and is connected basically with cells of the internal plexiform layer. The results suggest that the frog retina has the individual mechanism for time pattern detection, distinguishing it from the homogeneous light flow in a similar way as in case of spatial light pattern detection. It is possible that the first mechanism is responsible for the detection of any new stimulus in general, irrespective of its specificity, whereas the second mechanism serves for the measurement of suprathreshold differences between stimuli.  相似文献

Background

Birdsong and human vocal communication are both complex behaviours which show striking similarities mainly thought to be present in the area of development and learning. Recent studies, however, suggest that there are also parallels in vocal production mechanisms. While it has been long thought that vocal tract filtering, as it occurs in human speech, only plays a minor role in birdsong there is an increasing number of studies indicating the presence of sound filtering mechanisms in bird vocalizations as well.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Correlating high-speed X-ray cinematographic imaging of singing zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) to song structures we identified beak gape and the expansion of the oropharyngeal-esophageal cavity (OEC) as potential articulators. We subsequently manipulated both structures in an experiment in which we played sound through the vocal tract of dead birds. Comparing acoustic input with acoustic output showed that OEC expansion causes an energy shift towards lower frequencies and an amplitude increase whereas a wide beak gape emphasizes frequencies around 5 kilohertz and above.

Conclusion

These findings confirm that birds can modulate their song by using vocal tract filtering and demonstrate how OEC and beak gape contribute to this modulation.  相似文献

A novel metabolite was isolated from the culture supernatants of Rhodobacter sphaeroides OU5 when grown on l-tryptophan as sole source of nitrogen under photoheterotrophic conditions. It was identified by IR, NMR (1H, 13C) and MS as an indole terpenoid ether [3-hydroxy-6-(1H-indol-3-yloxy)-4-methylhexanoic acid] and is named as rhodethrin. Rhodethrin at 0.5 μM gave positive test in auxin bioassay and initiated early rooting in tissue-cultured plants than IAA at 5 μM. Rhodethrin has cytotoxic activity against Sup-T1 lymphoma and Colo-125 cancer cell lines at 10 nM.  相似文献

In work electric activity of frog's retina was investigated by silent substitution technique. Electroretinogram was recorded as a response to abrupt exchange of the referent stimulus-line with fixed values of luminance and orientation to test lines with varied luminance and orientations. As a result of the analysis it has been allocated two types of responses of a retina. The response to onset-offset of a stimulus-line was similar to the response at homogeneous illumination of a retina (ERG), and was characterized by both the high amplitude of b-wave (hundreds mkV) and significant asymmetry of b- and d-waves. Whereas the same waves in response to substitution of the same stimuli were more symmetric and had on ten times smaller amplitudes. Such activity of frog's retina was referred as pattern electroretinogram (PERG) recorded in a high vertebrate's retina as response to stimuli whose contrast was temporally modulated. The analysis of interaction of luminance and line orientation channels in retina was carried out on the base of construction V-shaped functions of stimuli differentiation. It has shown, that activities of both channels are linearly summarized in PERG. It means independent and parallel functioning of these mechanisms. However, it takes the short subdivision of luminance, namely, when luminance of test line not far from luminance of referent line. At the same time, from the moment of the double prevalence of test line in relation to referent line, growth of PERG amplitude has nonlinearly form. Such two-stage changing of PERG amplitude speaks presence in a retina of a frog of two mechanisms of coding of luminance. One mechanism coding light intensity by power of the discharge, it forms the information on an absolute level of light in the environment. Its activity is caused basically, by receptors and cells of external plexiform layer and is submitted by b-wave of electroretinogram. Other mechanism submitted in PERG, is based on the vector code of stimulus, it forms the information on spatial and time differentiation of a light in the visual field and is connected, basically, with cells of internal plexiform layer of frog's retina.  相似文献

In camelids the ventral parts of compartments 1 and 2 (C1/C2) and the total surface of compartment 3 of the forestomach are lined with tubular glands, whereas in ruminants the surface of the forestomach is composed entirely of stratified, squamous epithelium. Thus, differences in absorption rates between these foregut fermenters can be expected. In five camels C1/C2 was temporarily isolated, washed and filled with buffer solutions. Absorption of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and net absorption of sodium and water were estimated relative to Cr-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid as a fluid marker. SCFA were extensively absorbed in the forestomach; clearance rates of SCFA with different chain lengths were equal. After lowering the pH of solutions SCFA absorption rates increased, but much less than the increase of the non-ionized fraction. Absorption of propionate was lower when acetate had been added. Findings suggest that most of the SCFA in camels are transported in the ionized form, most likely via an anion exchange mechanism. Net water absorption is closely related to net sodium absorption. Apparently water absorption results from an iso-osmotic process. Differences between absorption mechanisms of SCFA from the forestomach of camelids and ruminants are discussed.  相似文献

The joint forces and moments driving the motion of a human subject are classically computed by an inverse dynamic calculation. However, even if this process is theoretically simple, many sources of errors may lead to huge inaccuracies in the results. Moreover, a direct comparison with in vivo measured loads or with "gold standard" values from literature is only possible for very specific studies. Therefore, assessing the inaccuracy of inverse dynamic results is not a trivial problem and a simple method is still required. This paper presents a simple method to evaluate both: (1) the consistency of the results obtained by inverse dynamics; (2) the influence of possible modifications in the inverse dynamic hypotheses. This technique concerns recursive calculation performed on full kinematic chains, and consists in evaluating the loads obtained by two different recursive strategies. It has been applied to complex 3D whole body movements of balance recovery. A recursive Newton-Euler procedure was used to compute the net joint loads. Two models were used to represent the subject bodies, considering or not the upper body as a unique rigid segment. The inertial parameters of the body segments were estimated from two different sets of scaling equations [De Leva, P., 1996. Adjustments to Zatsiorsky-Suleyanov's segment inertia parameters. Using this comparison technique, it has been shown that, for the balance recovery motions investigated: (1) the use of the scaling equations proposed by Dumas et al., instead of those proposed by De Leva, improves the consistency of the results (average relative influence up to 30% for the transversal moment); (2) the arm motions dynamically influence the recovery motion in a non negligible way (average relative influence up to 15% and 30% for the longitudinal force and the transversal moment, respectively).  相似文献

Massive Ca(2+) accumulation in mitochondria, plus the stimulating effect of an inducing agent, i.e., oxidative stress, induces the so-called permeability transition, which is characterized by the opening of a nonspecific pore. This work was aimed at studying the influence of thyroid hormone on the opening of such a nonspecific pore in kidney mitochondria, as induced by an oxidative stress. To meet this objective, membrane permeability transition was examined in mitochondria isolated from kidney of euthyroid and hypothyroid rats, after a period of ischemia/reperfusion. It was found that mitochondria from hypothyroid rats were able to retain accumulated Ca(2+) to sustain a transmembrane potential after Ca(2+) addition, as well as to maintain matrix NAD(+) and membrane cytochrome c content. The protective effect of hypothyroidism was clearly opposed to that occurring in ischemic reperfused mitochondria from euthyroid rats. Our findings demonstrate that these mitochondria were unable to preserve selective membrane permeability, except when cyclosporin A was added. It is proposed that the protection is conferred by the low content of cardiolipin found in the inner membrane. This phospholipid is required to switch adenine nucleotide translocase from specific carrier to a non-specific pore.  相似文献

NADH dehydrogenase (complex I) couples the oxidation of NADH for the reduction of ubiquinone with the generation of a proton gradient that can be used for the synthesis of ATP. We have found a missense mutation in the MT-ND5 subunit of NADH dehydrogenase in the Tibet chicken breed. In the present study, the mitochondrial respiratory control ratio (RCR) and NADH dehydrogenase activity in Tibet chicken embryonic brain with different genotypes were measured. Significant differences between animals carrying mitochondria with the EF493865.1:m.1627A vs. EF493865.1:m.1627C alleles were observed for RCR and enzyme activity.  相似文献
