Predation often represents the prevailing process shaping aquatic ecosystems. As foraging and antipredatory behaviour frequently relate to vision, turbidity may often impair the interactions between the predator and its prey, depending on prey type and source and level of turbidity. We studied the effect of inorganic turbidity (0–30 NTU) on the effectiveness of fish feeding on two types of prey in different habitats: free-swimming cladoceran (Daphnia pulex) in open water and plant-associated cladoceran (Sida crystallina) attached to Nuphar lutea leaves. For the planktivore, we used vision-oriented perch (Perca fluviatilis) common in the littoral zone of temperate lakes. In our study, increasing inorganic turbidity did not appear to initiate any significant change in the feeding efficiency of perch on free-swimming Daphnia pulex. However, we saw a markedly different feeding efficiency when perch targeted plant-attached Sida crystallina. Our results substantiate that floating-leaved macrophytes in turbid lakes may provide a favourable habitat for plant-attached cladocerans.  相似文献

We investigated the association of PON1 55/192 polymorphisms with type, severity and prognosis of stroke and oxidative markers. Paraoxonase1 (PON1), Glutathione Reductase (GSH-Rd) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured at day 1 and at day 5 following the onset of stroke. Genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction and restriction digestion. The frequencies of QQ and MM genotypes of PON1 192 and PON1 55, respectively, were significantly higher in controls than in patients. However, the allele frequencies of PON1 192 R and PON1 55 L were significantly more frequent in patients compared to controls. The frequency of combined genotype of RR/LL was significantly higher in cardioembolic group than in atherothrombotic group. PON1 activities were significantly diminished in stroke patients compared to controls. In contrast, serum MDA levels were significantly greater in patients than the values in controls. GSH-Rd activity was higher in patients with small lesion and good prognosis than those with large and poor prognosis. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels in patients with large lesions were higher than those with small lesions. PON1 55/192 polymorphisms influence activity of the enzyme. PON1 55/192 genotypes have been associated with MDA levels. In conclusion, PON1 genetic variations are associated with risk factors, severity, type and prognosis of stroke and oxidative stress.  相似文献

Considerable evidence suggests that digit length and dermatoglyphic asymmetry patterns in the hand are affected by early exposure to androgens. Because androgens play an important role in sexual differentiation of morphological and behavioral traits, digit length patterns often display sex differences. When present, sex differences in digit lengths are more pronounced on the right side as compared to the left side. Moreover, the ratio of the second to fourth digit length (2D:4D) in the right hand is inversely correlated with testosterone (T) in men. Because T is implicated in agonistic behavior, 2D:4D may be used as a marker of androgen exposure and subsequent behavioral variation in adulthood. Consequently, we investigated the relationships among 2D:4D, directional asymmetry of 2D:4D (left hand 2D:4D minus right hand 2D:4D) as a variant of T, and human reactive aggression. One hundred young men (n = 51) and women (n = 49) participated in our experiments (mean age = 20.1 years). Participants called two noncompliant confederates to solicit donations for a fictitious charity organization and selected follow-up letters after the calls. The force exerted when hanging up the phone and the "tone" of the follow-up letters were used to assess reactive aggression. High aggression scores were associated with high directional asymmetry of 2D:4D and masculinized (low) right hand 2D:4D, only in females and under high provocation. Directional asymmetry of 2D:4D was positively correlated with T in males (pooled data, n = 97). Taken together, these data confirm the predominantly right-sided influence of androgens on digit length and suggest that digit length ratios may be associated with female reactive aggression when sufficient provocation is present.  相似文献

Opportunistic infections are common in HIV-infected patients; they activate HIV replication and contribute to disease progression. In the present study we examined the role of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) and TLR9 in HIV-long terminal repeat (HIV-LTR) trans-activation and assessed whether TLR4 synergized with TLR2 or TLR9 to induce HIV replication. Soluble Mycobacterium tuberculosis factor (STF) and phenol-soluble modulin from Staphylococcus epidermidis induced HIV-LTR trans-activation in human microvessel endothelial cells cotransfected with TLR2 cDNA. Stimulation of ex vivo spleen cells from HIV-1 transgenic mice with TLR4, TLR2, and TLR9 ligands (LPS, STF, and CpG DNA, respectively) induced p24 Ag production in a dose-dependent manner. Costimulation of HIV-1 transgenic mice spleen cells with LPS and STF or CpG DNA induced TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma production in a synergistic manner and p24 production in an additive fashion. In the THP-1 human monocytic cell line stably expressing the HIV-LTR-luciferase construct, LPS and STF also induced HIV-LTR trans-activation in an additive manner. This is the first time that TLR2 and TLR9 and costimulation of TLRs have been shown to induce HIV replication. Together these results underscore the importance of TLRs in bacterial Ag- and CpG DNA-induced HIV-LTR trans-activation and HIV replication. These observations may be important in understanding the role of the innate immune system and the molecular mechanisms involved in the increased HIV replication and HIV disease progression associated with multiple opportunistic infections.  相似文献

The specific purpose of the present study was to show that extramuscular myofascial force transmission exclusively has substantial effects on muscular mechanics. Muscle forces exerted at proximal and distal tendons of the rat extensor digitorium longus (EDL) were measured simultaneously, in two conditions (1) with intact extramuscular connections (2) after dissecting the muscles' extramuscular connections to a maximum extent without endangering circulation and innervation (as in most in situ muscle experiments). A finite element model of EDL including the muscles' extramuscular connections was used to assess the effects of extramuscular myofascial force transmission on muscular mechanics, primarily to test if such effects lead to distribution of length of sarcomeres within muscle fibers. In condition (1), EDL isometric forces measured at the distal and proximal tendons were significantly different (F(dist) > F(prox), DeltaF approximates maximally 40% of the proximal force). The model results show that extramuscular myofascial force transmission causes distributions of strain in the fiber direction (shortening in the proximal, lengthening in the distal ends of fibers) at higher lengths. This indicates significant length distributions of sarcomeres arranged in series within muscle fibers. Stress distributions found are in agreement with the higher distal force measured, meaning that the muscle fiber is no longer the unit exerting equal forces at both ends. Experimental results obtained in condition (2) showed no significant changes in the length-force characteristics (i.e., proximo-distal force differences were maintained). This shows that a muscle in situ has to be distinguished from a muscle that is truly isolated in which case the force difference has to be zero. We conclude that extramuscular myofascial force transmission has major effects on muscle functioning.  相似文献

Genes which encode inflammatory cytokines are subject to polymorphisms in their regulatory regions that may effect both the level and ratio of cytokines produced in response to exogenous stimuli. These variant alleles are observed in a large percent of the population and are often associated with increased or decreased susceptibility or severity (modifiers) to infectious, immune or inflammatory diseases. Environmental factors can also play either a direct (i.e., causative factor) or indirect (modifying factor) role in these diseases. Thus, it would follow that gene-environment interactions would effect the expression and/or progression of the disease. In the present review, the concept that some of the common allelic variants found in cytokine genes represent modifying factors in chronic inflammatory diseases associated with occupational exposure is discussed.  相似文献

Refugees are at high risk of developing mental disorders. There is no evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that psychological interventions can prevent the onset of mental disorders in this group. We assessed the effectiveness of a self‐help psychological intervention developed by the World Health Organization, called Self‐Help Plus, in preventing the development of mental disorders among Syrian refugees experiencing psychological distress in Turkey. A two‐arm, assessor‐masked RCT was conducted in two Turkish areas. Eligible participants were adult Syrian refugees experiencing psychological distress (General Health Questionnaire ≥3), but without a diagnosis of mental disorder. They were randomly assigned either to the Self‐Help Plus arm (consisting of Self‐Help Plus combined with Enhanced Care as Usual, ECAU) or to ECAU only in a 1:1 ratio. Self‐Help Plus was delivered in a group format by two facilitators over five sessions. The primary outcome measure was the presence of any mental disorder assessed by the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview at six‐month follow‐up. Secondary outcome measures were the presence of mental disorders at post‐intervention, and psychological distress, symptoms of post‐traumatic stress disorder and depression, personally identified psychological outcomes, functional impairment, subjective well‐being, and quality of life at post‐intervention and six‐month follow‐up. Between October 1, 2018 and November 30, 2019, 1,186 refugees were assessed for inclusion. Five hundred forty‐four people were ineligible, and 642 participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to either Self‐Help Plus (N=322) or ECAU (N=320). Self‐Help Plus participants were significantly less likely to have any mental disorders at six‐month follow‐up compared to the ECAU group (21.69% vs. 40.73%; Cramer''s V = 0.205, p<0.001, risk ratio: 0.533, 95% CI: 0.408‐0.696). Analysis of secondary outcomes suggested that Self‐Help Plus was not effective immediately post‐intervention, but was associated with beneficial effects at six‐month follow‐up in terms of symptoms of depression, personally identified psychological outcomes, and quality of life. This is the first prevention RCT ever conducted among refugees experiencing psychological distress but without a mental disorder. Self‐Help Plus was found to be an effective strategy for preventing the onset of mental disorders. Based on these findings, this low‐intensity self‐help psychological intervention could be scaled up as a public health strategy to prevent mental disorders in refugee populations exposed to ongoing adversities.  相似文献

We report on the synthesis by coupling of a triterpenoid oleanolic acid with 4'-diethylamino-3-hydroxyflavone (FE) to produce an environment-sensitive biomembrane probe with two-band ratiometric response in fluorescence emission. The synthesized compound (probe FOT) was tested in a series of model solvents and demonstrated the response to solvent polarity and intermolecular hydrogen bonding very similar to that of parent probe FE. Meantime when incorporated into lipid bilayer membranes, it showed new features differing in response between lipids of different surface charges as well as between glycerophospholipids and sphingomyelin. We observed that in the conditions of coexistence of rafts and non-raft structures the probe is excluded from the rafts.  相似文献

This work investigated a three-generation Menkes disease family, where germ-line mosaicism was suspected in the maternal grandmother of the index patient. She had given birth to 2 boys who died of suspected Menkes disease on the basis of clinical and photographic evidence. Biochemical analysis of the index patient confirmed the diagnosis of Menkes disease, and DNA analysis established a partial gene deletion (EX11_EX23del), involving exons 11-23 and the 3'-untranslated region (UTR) of ATP7A. A junction fragment was detectable by Southern blot analysis, which enabled carrier analysis. The mother was demonstrated to be a carrier, whereas analysis of lymphoblasts and skin fibroblasts from the maternal grandmother gave no indication of a partial gene deletion. No materials were available from the possibly affected maternal uncles. Further genetic analyses, including biochemical testing of the grandmother and haplotype analysis using four intragenic markers on DNA from selected members of the family, corroborated this finding. The combined results from DNA analyses showed that the grandmother had transmitted three different ATP7A haplotypes to her offspring: (1) the at-risk allele (CA(B))-1 and the deletion; (2) the at-risk allele (CA(B))-1 without deletion; and (3) the second allele (CAB)-2 without deletion. In conclusion, our study demonstrated segregation of Menkes disease within the family investigated that can best be explained by extensive germ-line mosaicism in the maternal grandmother. The finding of germ-line mosaicism has obvious implications for genetic counseling of Menkes disease families.  相似文献
