In many cases of interspecific kleptoparasitism, hosts developdefensive behaviors to minimize the impact of kleptoparasites.Because vigilance and defensive behaviors are often costly,selection should favor hosts that adjust the amount of investmentneeded to minimize losses to kleptoparasitism. However, examplesof such facultative responses are rare. Here, we investigatethe response of cooperatively breeding pied babblers (Turdoidesbicolor) to the drongo (Dicrurus adsimilis), an avian kleptoparasitethat regularly follows pied babbler groups, often giving alarmcalls to alert the group to predators but also occasionallygiving false alarm calls in order to steal food items. We showthat pied babbler response to drongos varies markedly accordingto babbler group size. In small groups, where there are fewindividuals available to act as sentinels, babblers sentinelless when a drongo is present and respond strongly to drongoalarm calls. However, in large groups, where there are manyindividuals available to participate in predator vigilance,babblers sentinel more often when a drongo is present, rarelyrespond to drongo alarm calls, and aggressively displace drongos,with a consequent decline in the number of successful kleptoparasitismevents. This behavior represent a facultative response to akleptoparasite according to the costs versus benefits of toleratingtheir presence.  相似文献

The granulosa cell produces a protein inhibitor of aromatase activity (follicle-regulatory protein: FRP), which recently was purified to homogeneity. To determine the possible involvement of FRP in follicular maturation, we examined the size distribution of follicles and their morphological patterns as well as serum steroid levels after the systemic administration of FRP and/or gonadotropin to guinea pigs, which have 5-6 days between luteolysis and ovulation in a 16-day cycle. FRP was partially purified from porcine follicular fluid by ammonium sulfate precipitation (0-35%), Dye Matrex Orange A Chromatography, dialysis, and lyophylization. To investigate the effect of pregnant mare's serum (PMS) during the periovulatory period in follicular development, adult guinea pigs underwent unilateral ovariectomy on Days 10, 12, and 14 of the estrous cycle (N = 6 each). Guinea pigs were injected twice daily with vehicle or PMS (5 IU) and 2 days thereafter the remaining ovaries were removed. Another group of guinea pigs received, in addition, intraperitoneal injections of FRP (1 mg) each morning from Day 8 of estrus until they were killed. The resected ovaries were fixed, embedded in paraffin, serially sectioned (7 micron), and stained with Azan for comparative study via light microscopy. All follicles greater than 400 micron were classified by size, and the atretic pattern was determined by mural granulosa cell pyknosis and antral sloughing. The distribution of follicular size was not affected by hemicastration at Day 10, although the percentage of total atretic follicles decreased. In the PMS-treated group, there was a significant decrease in the number of viable follicles (700-899 micron) after hemicastration. Also pronounced in follicles of this size was the lack of mid-atretic follicles. After injections of FRP for 3 or 5 days, the overall number of follicles was almost doubled as compared to the number found in the normal ovary. Additionally, there was a significant increase in the percentage of follicles that were recently atretic, although the total percentage of atretic follicles was unchanged. After hemicastration at Day 10 followed by FRP treatment for 2 days, the total percentage of atretic follicles in the remaining ovary decreased to 18% compared with 35% in the normal ovary, 46% in the hemicastrated plus PMS-treated group, and 38% in the hemicastrated and PMS- and FRP-treated group (all p less than 0.01). Parasites of two small fish species from a Ramsar wetland in South Africa were studied in 2014–2015. The cichlid Pseudocrenilabrus philander (Weber, 1897) was parasitised by the copepod Lernaea cyprinacea Linnaeus, 1758, the monogenean Gyrodactylus thlapi Christison, Shinn & van As, 2005 and four gryporhynchid metacestode (Cyclophyllidea) species: Paradilepis scolecina (Rudolph, 1819), Paradilepis maleki Khalil, 1961, Neogryporhynchus lasiopeius Baer & Bona, 1960 and Valipora campylancristrota (Wedl, 1855). The cyprinid Enteromius paludinosus (syn. Barbus paludinosus) (Peters, 1852) was infected with the monogenean parasites Dogielius intorquens Crafford, Luus-Powell & Avenant-Oldewage, 2012, Dactylogyrus teresae Mashego, 1983, and three Dactylogyrus spp. These results represent several new locality as well as host records and further contribute information on the parasitic diversity in the Barberspan Ramsar wetland.  相似文献

Diel movements of Orange–Vaal smallmouth yellowfish Labeobarbus aeneus (Burchell, 1822) in the Vaal River, South Africa, were determined by externally attaching radio transmitters to 11 adult fish and manually tracking them between March and May 2012. Twenty-four radio telemetry monitoring surveys produced 2 304 diel tracks. At night, yellowfish displayed a preference for slow shallow (<0.3?m s?1, <0.5?m) and fast shallow habitats (>0.3?m s?1, <0.3?m), whereas by day they avoided these habitats, preferring fast deep areas (>0.3?m s?1, >0.3?m). The average total distance of 272?m moved per 24-hour period was three times greater than the diel range, and the average maximum displacement per minute was significantly higher in daytime (4?m) than at night (1.5?m). These findings suggest that L. aeneus is active primarily during the day in fast-flowing, deeper waters, and relatively inactive at night, when it occupies shallower habitats. This behaviour should be further explored to identify causal mechanisms underlying the diel habitat shifts in this species such as water temperature, foraging tactics and/or predator avoidance.  相似文献

In the mouse embryo, Dlx5 is expressed in the otic placode and vesicle, and later in the semicircular canals of the inner ear. In mice homozygous for a null Dlx5/LacZ allele, a severe dysmorphogenesis of the vestibular region is observed, characterized by the absence of semicircular canals and the shortening of the endolymphatic duct. Minor defects are observed in the cochlea, although Dlx5 is not expressed in this region. Cristae formation is severely impaired; however, sensory epithelial cells, recognized by calretinin immunostaining, are present in the vestibular epithelium of Dlx5(-/-) mice. The maculae of utricle and saccule are present but cells appear sparse and misplaced. The abnormal morphogenesis of the semicircular canals is accompanied by an altered distribution of proliferating and apoptotic cells. In the Dlx5(-/-) embryos, no changes in expression of Nkx5.1(Hmx3), Pax2, and Lfng have been seen, while expression of bone morphogenetic protein-4 (Bmp4) was drastically reduced. Notably, BMP4 has been shown to play a fundamental role in vestibular morphogenesis of the chick embryo. We propose that development of the semicircular canals and the vestibular inner ear requires the independent control of several homeobox genes, which appear to exert their function via tight regulation of BPM4 expression and the regional organization of cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis.  相似文献

Extensive and unequivocal tight junctions are here reported between the lateral borders of the cellular layer that circumscribes the arachnid (spider) central nervous system. This account details the features of these structures, which form a beltlike reticulum that is more complex than the simple linear tight junctions hitherto found in invertebrate tissues and which bear many of the characteristics of vertebrate zonulae occludentes. We also provide evidence that these junctions form the basis of a permeability barrier to exogenous compounds. In thin sections, the tight junctions are identifiable as punctate points of membrane apposition; they are seen to exclude the stain and appear as election- lucent moniliform strands along the lines of membrane fusion in en face views of uranyl-calcium-treated tissues. In freeze-fracture replicas, the regions of close membrane apposition exhibit P-face (PF) ridges and complementary E-face (EF) furrows that are coincident across face transitions, although slightly offset with respect to one another. The free inward diffusion of both ionic and colloidal lanthanum is inhibited by these punctate tight junctions so that they appear to form the basis of a circumferential blood-brain barrier. These results support the contention that tight junctions exist in the tissues of the invertebrata in spite of earlier suggestions that (a) they are unique to vertebrates and (b) septate junctions are the equivalent invertebrate occluding structure. The component tight junctional 8- to 10-nm-particulate PF ridges are intimately intercalated with, but clearly distinct from, inverted gap junctions possessing the 13-nm EF particles typical of arthropods. Hence, no confusion can occur as to which particles belong to each of the two junctional types, as commonly happens with vertebrate tissues, especially in the analysis of developing junctions. Indeed, their coexistance in this way supports the idea, over which there has been some controversy, that the intramembrane particles making up these two junctional types must be quite distinct entities rather than products of a common precursor.  相似文献
