Introduction of non-native species is a problem worldwide. Local populations of the Mexican mojarra, Cichlasoma istlanum, have been hypothesized to be negatively affected by the introduction of the convict fish, Amatitlania nigrofasciata. The Mexican mojarra is a cichlid fish native to the Balsas-River Basin. As a first approach to understand the behavioral effect of the convict fish on Mexican mojarra, we experimentally studied the behavioral responses of the latter when exposed to the former. Thus, we recorded refuge use, swimming activity and feeding rate of Mexican mojarra in the presence of a convict fish, a conspecific, and alone. Mexican mojarra used refuges for longer, swum for shorter and ate less in the presence of convict fish than with conspecifics or alone. Because prolonged use of refuge habitat may deprive Mexican mojarra of opportunities to feed, grow, and reproduce, we hypothesize that convict fish can negatively affect the fitness of the former where the two species co-occur.  相似文献

Plant species aboveground allometry can be viewed as a functional trait that reflects the evolutionary trade‐off between above‐ and belowground resources. In forest trees, allometry is related to productivity and resilience in different environments, and it is tightly connected with a compromise between efficiency‐safety and competitive ability. A better understanding on how this trait varies within and across species is critical to determine the potential of a species/population to perform along environmental gradients. We followed a hierarchical framework to assess tree height‐diameter allometry variation within and across four common European Pinus species. Tree height‐diameter allometry variation was a function of solely genetic components –approximated by either population effects or clinal geographic responses of the population's site of origin– and differential genetic plastic responses –approximated by the interaction between populations and two climatic variables of the growing sites (temperature and precipitation)–. Our results suggest that, at the species level, climate of the growing sites set the tree height‐diameter allometry of xeric and mesic species (Pinus halepensis, P. pinaster and P. nigra) apart from the boreal species (P. sylvestris), suggesting a weak signal of their phylogenies in the tree height‐diameter allometry variation. Moreover, accounting for interpopulation variability within species for the four pine species aided to: (1) detect genetic differences among populations in allometry variation, which in P. nigra and P. pinaster were linked to gene pools –genetic diversity measurements–; (2) reveal the presence of differential genetic variation in plastic responses along two climatic gradients in tree allometry variation. In P. sylvestris and P. nigra, genetic variation was the result of adaptive patterns to climate, while in P. pinaster and P. halepensis, this signal was either weaker or absent, respectively; and (3) detect local adaptation in the exponent of the tree height‐diameter allometry relationship in two of the four species (P. sylvestris and P. nigra), as it was a function of populations' latitude and altitude variables. Our findings suggest that the four species have been subjected to different historical and climatic constraints that might have driven their aboveground allometry and promoted different life strategies.  相似文献

In order to study if there are differences between cells of the same tissue with one and two nucleoli, nuclear and nucleolar volume, density of tritiated uridine incorporation, amount of DNA per nucleus and intensity of cytoplasmic basophilia were measured in mononucleolated and binucleolated rat epithelial endometrial cells, in onion root meristematic cells and in chick embryo matrix cells of the central nervous system, neuroblasts and neurons. No significant differences in nuclear volume, density of tritiated uridine incorporation and amount of DNA per nucleus were found between cells of the same type with diverse numbers of nucleoli. Binucleolated endometrial cells, matrix cells, and root meristematic cells have biphasic distributions of nucleolar volumes. One peak of this distribution roughly coincides with the nucleolar volume of mononucleolated cells, the other peak corresponds almost to double the volume. As the density of uridine incorporation is the same irrespective of the nucleolar number and volume, the cells with larger nucleolar volumes have higher pre-rRNA synthesis. These cells also have higher amounts of ribosomes in the cytoplasm, as revealed by the photometric study of basophilia. It is concluded that in this population of cells the ribosomal production is regulated to a higher steady equilibrium than in the general population. This difference is not due to polyploidism or to the increased DNA content of G2 phase cells. Binucleolated neuroblasts and neurons have nucleolar volumes similar to those of mononucleolated ones.  相似文献

The model of chronic intermittent stress by immobilization during pregnancy may produce alterations in the mechanisms that maintain adrenal gland homeostasis. In earlier investigations using this model, significant variations in plasma prolactin and corticosterone levels, and adrenal gland weights were observed. We hypothesized that chronic stress causes changes in apoptosis in the adrenal glands of pregnant rats. We identified and quantified apoptotic cells in the adrenal cortex and examined their ultrastructural characteristics using transmission electron microscopy. Adrenal glands of pregnant rats at gestation days 12, 17 and 21 were studied for control and experimental (stressed) rats. Immunolabelling techniques, stereological analysis and image quantification of adrenal gland sections were combined to determine differences in apoptosis in the different cell populations of the adrenal cortex. The apoptotic index of the experimental rats showed a significant reduction at gestation day 17, while at days 12 and 21 there were no differences from controls. Moreover, the apoptotic index of the reticular zones in control and experimental animals showed a significant increase compared to the glomerular and fascicular zones at the three gestation times studied. Chronic stress by immobilization reduced the caspase-dependent apoptotic index at gestation day 17, which may be related to variations in plasma concentrations of estrogens and prolactin.  相似文献

We have analyzed the patterns of synonymous codon preferences of the nuclear genes of Plasmodium falciparum, a unicellular parasite characterized by an extremely GC-poor genome. When all genes are considered, codon usage is strongly biased toward A and T in third codon positions, as expected, but multivariate statistical analysis detects a major trend among genes. At one end genes display codon choices determined mainly by the extreme genome composition of this parasite, and very probably their expression level is low. At the other end a few genes exhibit an increased relative usage of a particular subset of codons, many of which are C-ending. Since the majority of these few genes is putatively highly expressed, we postulate that the increased C-ending codons are translationally optimal. In conclusion, while codon usage of the majority of P. falciparum genes is determined mainly by compositional constraints, a small number of genes exhibit translational selection. Live Salmonella vaccines are limited in use by the inherent toxicity of the lipopolysaccharide. The waaN gene encodes a myristyl transferase required for the secondary acylation of lipid A in lipopolysaccharide. A waaN mutant exhibits reduced induction of the inflammatory cytokines associated with lipopolysaccharide toxicity. Here the characteristics of a Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium aroA waaN mutant (SK100) in vitro and in vivo compared with its parent aroA strain (SL3261) were described. Phenotypic analysis of purified lipopolysaccharide obtained from SK100 confirmed that the physical and biological activities of the lipopolysaccharide had been altered. Nevertheless both strains had similar patterns of colonization and persistence in mice and significantly the aroA waaN mutant was equally as effective as the parent at protecting against challenge with wild-type S. Typhimurium. Furthermore, a SK100 strain was constructed expressing both tetanus toxin fragment C and the circumsporozoite protein of a malaria parasite. In marked contrast to its isogenic parent, the new attenuated strain induces significantly enhanced immune responses against the circumsporozoite protein. The waaN mutation enhances the ability of this strain to elicit immune responses towards guest antigens. This study provides important insights into the development of safe and effective multivalent Salmonella vaccines.  相似文献

Potent and durable vaccine responses will be required for control of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum (Pf). RTS,S/AS01 is the first, and to date, the only vaccine that has demonstrated significant reduction of clinical and severe malaria in endemic cohorts in Phase 3 trials. Although the vaccine is protective, efficacy declines over time with kinetics paralleling the decline in antibody responses to the Pf circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP). Although most attention has focused on antibodies to repeat motifs on PfCSP, antibodies to other regions may play a role in protection. Here, we expressed and characterized seven monoclonal antibodies to the C-terminal domain of CSP (ctCSP) from volunteers immunized with RTS,S/AS01. Competition and crystal structure studies indicated that the antibodies target two different sites on opposite faces of ctCSP. One site contains a polymorphic region (denoted α-ctCSP) and has been previously characterized, whereas the second is a previously undescribed site on the conserved β-sheet face of the ctCSP (denoted β-ctCSP). Antibodies to the β-ctCSP site exhibited broad reactivity with a diverse panel of ctCSP peptides whose sequences were derived from field isolates of P. falciparum whereas antibodies to the α-ctCSP site showed very limited cross reactivity. Importantly, an antibody to the β-site demonstrated inhibition activity against malaria infection in a murine model. This study identifies a previously unidentified conserved epitope on CSP that could be targeted by prophylactic antibodies and exploited in structure-based vaccine design.  相似文献
