Transposition of the hobo element in Drosophila melanogaster somatic cells

Somatic mutation and recombination test on wing cells of Drosophila melanogaster showed that the recombination frequency in the somatic tissues of strains studied correlated with the presence of a full-length copy of the hobo transposable element in the genome. Transposition of hobo in somatic tissue cells at a frequency 3.5 × 10^?2 per site per X chromosome was shown by fluorescence in situ hybridization with salivary gland polytene chromosomes of larvae of one of the D. melanogaster strains having a full-length hobo copy.     

Presynaptic BDNF required for a presynaptic but not postsynaptic component of LTP at hippocampal CA1-CA3 synapses

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implicated in several forms of long-term potentiation (LTP) at different hippocampal synapses. Using two-photon imaging of FM 1-43, a fluorescent marker of synaptic vesicle cycling, we find that BDNF is selectively required for those forms of LTP at Schaffer collateral synapses that recruit a presynaptic component of expression. BDNF-dependent forms of LTP also require activation of L-type voltage-gated calcium channels. One form of LTP with presynaptic expression, theta burst LTP, is thought to be of particular behavioral importance. Using restricted genetic deletion to selectively disrupt BDNF production in either the entire forebrain (CA3 and CA1) or in only the postsynaptic CA1 neuron, we localize the source of BDNF required for LTP to presynaptic neurons. These results suggest that long-term synaptic plasticity has distinct presynaptic and postsynaptic modules. Release of BDNF from CA3 neurons is required to recruit the presynaptic, but not postsynaptic, module of plasticity.

It has been established that mucous membrane of jejunum and stomach tissue of 3-4-day calves are characterized by high intensity of glycolytic and aerobic processes. Digestion disorders with diarrheic symptoms are accompanied by changes in levels and relations in NAD (P)(+)-dependent dehydrogenase metabolites reduction of lactate- and succinate dehydrogenases, alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyltransferase activities in cytoplasm and mitochondria of proximal and distal parts of the jejunum in comparison with clinically normal animals.     

The rate of transposition and the specificity of transposable element insertions are not sufficient to cause gonadal dysgenesis in Drosophila melanogaster

Data disputing the unique role of transposable elements (TEs) in the induction of intraspecific gonadal dysgenesis (GD) in Drosophila are discussed.     

P-M hybrid dysgenesis affects juvenile hormone metabolism in Drosophila melanogaster females

This paper studies the metabolism of the juvenile hormone, which affects gonads functioning in Drosophila melanogaster females under P-M hybrid dysgenesis. It is shown that dysgenic females grown at 29°C have increased levels of the juvenile hormone (its degradation and stress reactivity are reduced), which apparently is a compensatory response to ovarian hypoplasia.
