Trade‐offs have often been invoked to explain the evolution of ecological specialization. Phytophagous insects have been especially well studied, but there has been little evidence that resource‐based trade‐offs contribute to the evolution of host specialization in this group. Here, we combine experimental evolution and partial genome resequencing of replicate seed beetle selection lines to test the trade‐off hypothesis and measure the repeatability of evolution. Bayesian estimates of selection coefficients suggest that rapid adaptation to a poor host (lentil) was mediated by standing genetic variation at multiple genetic loci and involved many of the same variants in replicate lines. Sublines that were then switched back to the ancestral host (mung bean) showed a more gradual and variable (less repeatable) loss of adaptation to lentil. We were able to obtain estimates of variance effective population sizes from genome‐wide differences in allele frequencies within and between lines. These estimates were relatively large, which suggests that the contribution of genetic drift to the loss of adaptation following reversion was small. Instead, we find that some alleles that were favored on lentil were selected against during reversion on mung bean, consistent with the genetic trade‐off hypothesis. 相似文献

Müllerian mimicry, where groups of chemically defended species display a common warning color pattern and thereby share the cost of educating predators, is one of the most striking examples of ecological adaptation. Classic models of Müllerian mimicry predict that all unpalatable species of a similar size and form within a community should converge on a single mimetic pattern, but instead communities of unpalatable species often display a remarkable diversity of mimetic patterns (e.g. neotropical ithomiine butterflies). It has been suggested that this apparent paradox may be explained if different suites of predators and species belonging to different mimicry groups utilize different micro-habitats within the community. We developed a stochastic individual-based model for a community of unpalatable mimetic prey species and their predators to evaluate this hypothesis and to examine the effect of predator heterogeneity on prey micro-habitat use. We found that community-level mimetic diversity was higher in simulations with heterogeneous predator micro-habitat use than in simulations with homogeneous predator micro-habitat use. Regardless of the form of predation, mimicry pattern-based assortative mating caused community-level mimetic diversity to persist. Heterogeneity in predator micro-habitat use led to an increased association between mimicry pattern and prey micro-habitat use relative to homogeneous predator micro-habitat use. This increased association was driven, at least in part, by evolutionary convergence of prey micro-habitat use when predators displayed heterogeneous micro-habitat use. These findings provide a theoretical explanation for an important question in evolutionary biology: how is community-level Müllerian mimetic diversity maintained in the face of selection against rare phenotypes? 相似文献

The extent to which persisting species may fill the functional role of extirpated or declining species has profound implications for the structure of biological communities and ecosystem functioning. In North America, arthropodivorous bats are threatened on a continent‐wide scale by the spread of white‐nose syndrome (WNS), a disease caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans. We tested whether bat species that display lower mortality from this disease can partially fill the functional role of other bat species experiencing population declines. Specifically, we performed high‐throughput amplicon sequencing of guano from two generalist predators: the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) and big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus). We then compared changes in prey consumption before versus after population declines related to WNS. Dietary niches contracted for both species after large and abrupt declines in little brown bats and smaller declines in big brown bats, but interspecific dietary overlap did not change. Furthermore, the incidence and taxonomic richness of agricultural pest taxa detected in diet samples decreased following bat population declines. Our results suggest that persisting generalist predators do not necessarily expand their dietary niches following population declines in other predators, providing further evidence that the functional roles of different generalist predators are ecologically distinct. 相似文献

Human serum albumin binds ligands such as fatty acids and metals in circulation. Oxidative stress can modify albumin and affect ligand binding. This study examines the role of oxidative stress and fatty acids in modulating cobalt binding to albumin in patients with fatty liver. Elevated levels of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyls, indicative of oxidative stress were evident in serum of patients with fatty liver. A significant decrease in albumin-cobalt binding was also observed. Albumin isolated from patient serum also showed an increase in bound fatty acids. In vitro experiments indicated that while oxidant exposure or removal of fatty acids independently decreased cobalt binding to albumin, removal of fatty acids from the protein prior to oxidant exposure did not influence the oxidant effect on albumin-cobalt binding. These results suggest that oxidative stress and fatty acids on albumin can influence albumin-cobalt binding in patients with fatty liver by independent mechanisms. 相似文献

Persistence of biological control agents against mosquito larvae was tested under simulated field conditions. Mosquito larvicidal activity of transgenic Anabaena PCC 7120 expressing cry4Aa, cry11Aa and p20 from Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. israelensis was greater than B. thuringiensis ssp. israelensis primary powder (fun 89C06D) or wettable powder (WP) (Bactimos products) when either mixed with silt or exposed to sunlight outdoors. Reduction of Bactimos primary powder toxicity was at least 10-fold higher than Anabaena's after mixing with silt. In outdoors experiments, Bactimos WP remained toxic (over 30% mortality of 3rd instar Aedes aegypti larvae) for 2-4 days only, while transgenic Anabaena's toxicity endured 8-21 days. 相似文献

The correction of soft-tissue defects presents a challenge in plastic and reconstructive surgery. The implantation of isolated and culture-expanded adipose precursor cells is a solution to this problem because these cells differentiate into adipocytes when implanted in vivo. Appropriate scaffolds are needed in soft-tissue engineering to allow the differentiation of precursor cells. The optimal carrier needs to be defined.In this study, human preadipocytes were isolated and cultured. Three different carrier materials were seeded with 106 preadipocytes each and implanted in 42 nude mice. Sponges and nonwoven carriers based on hyaluronic acid modified by esterification (HYAFF 11) were compared with collagen sponges. Scaffolds without cells served as negative controls in the same animal. After 3 and 8 weeks, the grafts were explanted. Macroscopic appearance, weight, thickness, microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and TEM (scaffold structure, cellularity, penetration depth of the seeded cells, vascularization) were assessed and evaluated for differences in scaffold-cell interactions.Preadipocytes differentiated earlier in vitro when attached to HYAFF 11 scaffolds than to other carrier materials. Macroscopically, all preadipocyte constructs were yellowish and well vascularized, and the controls were white and avascular. Vessel formation was more pronounced around mature adipocytes. Microscopically, HYAFF 11 constructs showed a higher cell density than collagen constructs. The pores of the sponges contained more differentiated adipocytes than the nonwoven carriers, whereas the undifferentiated preadipocytes were more numerous in the nonwoven material. Penetration of adipose precursor cells was deeper and more homogeneous in HYAFF 11 scaffolds. Electron microscopy demonstrated well-differentiated adipocytes and large amounts of extracellular matrix in HYAFF 11 sponges.HYAFF 11 sponges supported the expansion and differentiation of the adipose precursor cells. This carrier is superior to the nonwoven carrier with regard to adipocyte differentiation and superior to the collagen sponge with regard to cellularity. This is a promising method for the reconstruction of soft-tissue defects. Modifications of the scaffold (larger pore size and coating with adipogenic factors) will be examined in further experiments. 相似文献

Certain general facets of biotic response to climate change, such as shifts in phenology and geographic distribution, are well characterized; however, it is not clear whether the observed similarity of responses across taxa will extend to variation in other population‐level processes. We examined population response to climatic variation using long‐term incidence data (collected over 42 years) encompassing 149 butterfly species and considerable habitat diversity (10 sites along an elevational gradient from sea level to over 2,700 m in California). Population responses were characterized by extreme heterogeneity that was not attributable to differences in species composition among sites. These results indicate that habitat heterogeneity might be a buffer against climate change and highlight important questions about mechanisms maintaining interpopulation differences in responses to weather. Despite overall heterogeneity of response, population dynamics were accurately predicted by our model for many species at each site. However, the overall correlation between observed and predicted incidence in a cross validation analysis was moderate (Pearson's r = 0.23, SE 0.01), and 97% of observed data fell within the predicted 95% credible intervals. Prediction was most successful for more abundant species as well as for sites with lower annual turnover. Population‐level heterogeneity in response to climate variation and the limits of our predictive power highlight the challenges for a future of increasing climatic variability. 相似文献

For trans-tibial amputees maintenance over time of a quality fit of the prosthesis to the residual limb is an important clinical challenge. The purpose of this research was to compare diurnal and long-term (5 weeks to 6 months) interface stress changes as well as variance in the change in cross-sectional area down the length of the residual limb. If long-term changes were simply accentuated diurnal fluctuations then this result would suggest similar treatment methods should be used for both conditions. Interface pressures and shear stresses at 13 sites and residual limb shape were measured on eight trans-tibial amputee subjects using patellar-tendon-bearing prostheses. Data were collected at diurnal intervals (within the same day at least 5 h apart) as well as at long-term intervals (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 weeks apart). Absolute diurnal interface stress changes were not significantly different from those at 5-weeks intervals but were significantly smaller than those at 15, 20, and 25-weeks intervals. Mean interface stress changes increased significantly (p<0.05) for increased session-to-session intervals. Variance of the change in cross-sectional area down the length of the residual limb was significantly smaller for diurnal intervals than for 6-months intervals, indicating that long-term changes were more localized than diurnal changes. These results indicate that long-term changes are not simply accentuated diurnal fluctuations, suggesting that different treatment methods should be used to treat each condition. 相似文献
