We analyze a disturbed form of the general Lotka-Volterra model of an ecosystem with m interacting species. The disturbances act on the intrinsic growth rates of the species and are assumed to be bounded but otherwise unknown. We employ a Lyapunov technique and the concept of "reachable set" from control theory to estimate the set of all possible population densities that are attainable as a result of the disturbances. To calculate estimates for this reachable set, a number of numerical methods that entail the solution to one or more global optimization problems are developed. Specific examples involving two, three, and four species are solved. We also derive an explicit analytical expression that represents an estimate for the reachable set in the m-dimensional case. The estimate is conservative but can be evaluated without carrying out any optimization procedure. We show that methods developed in this paper can be applied to certain other types of nonlinear ecosystem models.  相似文献

In this study currently used methods for analysis of poliovirus with monoclonal antibodies and determination of nucleotide sequence in viral RNA are presented. Twenty one strains of polioviruses isolated in Poland between 1981 and 1989 were tested. Nineteen of these strains were determined as to be derived from attenuated strains, including 10 strains isolated from 9 poliomyelitis patients. Two strains, one of type 1 isolated in 1984 and one of type 2 isolated in 1982 from children with meningitis were determined to be wild strains. The results obtained with monoclonal antibodies were confirmed by partial nucleotide sequence by dideoxy primer extension method. Analysis of poliovirus strains circulating in Poland in last 15 years suggest that the elimination of wild strains was achieved and sporadic isolation of wild strains is due most probably to imported strains.  相似文献

The Microscreen assay was developed as a means of testing very small samples, as in complex mixture fractionation. It is a multi-endpoint assay which utilizes E. coli WP2s(lambda). Exposure takes place to serial dilutions of the test compound in microtitre wells (250 microliters) followed by sampling from wells in which growth has occurred ('non-toxic wells'). Although a number of different endpoints can be measured, only the prophage induction endpoint (the first one developed) has been extensively tested. Results with 133 compounds are presented. These include 111 compounds which have been tested in the S. typhimurium assay and 66 compounds for which both rodent bioassay and S. typhimurium assay data exists. The concordance for the Microscreen assay and the S. typhimurium assay was 71%. For this group of compounds, the sensitivity of the Microscreen assay in detecting carcinogens was 76% compared with 58% for the S. typhimurium assay. However, the S. typhimurium assay was somewhat more specific (69%) compared with the Microscreen (56%). The overall association between carcinogenicity and Microscreen results was statistically significant (p = 0.029), whereas for the S. typhimurium assay the association with carcinogenicity was non-significant (p = 0.086). The Microscreen assay was able to detect halogenated compounds better than the S. typhimurium assay. The Microscreen assay should prove useful in complex mixture fractionation, or in other situations where sample size is limiting.  相似文献

Chromosome aberrations (CA) and sister-chromatid exchanges (SCE) were measured in lymphocytes of (A) 32 healthy individuals working in the flower industry and exposed to pesticides, (B) 32 individuals exposed as above and hospitalized for bladder cancer, and (C) 31 controls. Compounds to which floriculturists were exposed included 18 nitro-organic herbicides and fungicides, 9 nitro-organic fungicides, 12 organophosphate and organothiophosphate insecticides, 4 hydrocarbon derivative herbicides and 5 inorganic fungicides and insecticides. 150 and 70 metaphases per individual were scored for CA and SCE, respectively. A significant increase in the incidence of CA and SCE was observed in both exposed groups. Cancer patients showed the presence of rare rearrangements (dicentrics, rings and quadriradials) that were not observed in controls and were present at a lower frequency in healthy exposed people. Hyperdiploid and polyploid metaphases were also significantly increased in the 2 exposed groups compared to controls. Stratifying for age or smoking habits, although affecting the significance of individual data, did not change the substance of the results.  相似文献

Summary Seedlings of shade-intolerant species react to alterations of the light climate caused by their neighbors with morphological changes that may influence the pattern of resource acquisition and utilization at the whole-canopy level. One such change, the increased stem elongation rate that is triggered by low red (R, 660 nm) to far-red (FR, 730 nm) ratios (R:FR) in dense canopies, might reduce the amount of assimilates available for leaf area expansion or root growth, and in that way affect resource capture by the canopy. We have tested this hypothesis by comparing the growth of both isolated individuals and canopies of the weed Amaranthus quitensis under conditions differing only in the spectral distribution of the incident light. When canopies received the full spectrum of sunlight, the stems were a large proportion (40–57%) of total biomass. Filtering the FR waveband (and hence raising the R:FR ratio to eliminate the neighbors' proximity-signal) resulted in shorter canopies with lighter stems. However, the growth of leaves and roots was not promoted by this treatment, indicating that the opportunity cost of the assimilates invested in the stems was nil or very small. Filtering the FR had no effect on biomass accumulation when plants were grown as isolated individuals. The higher growth of the canopics under full spectrum could be due to a higher light interception or to a higher efficiency of light conversion into biomass. The first possibility is weakened by the observation that filtering the FR had no effect on the dynamics of soil covering by the crops. The second is indirectly strengthened by results of an experiment with isolated plants showing that stem elongation, stem growth, and total plant biomass can be increased by reducing the flux of R light received by the stems without affecting the light climate of the leaves. Further work is needed to distinguish between these two possibilities; whatever the cause, our results show that the elongation responses to decreased R:FR may lead to a net increase in canopy productivity, and do not necessarily have a negative impact on the growth of resource-harvesting organs.  相似文献

Synthesis of heat shock proteins (HSPs) in the leaves of a drought- and heat-resistant (line ZPBL 1304), and a drought- and heat-sensitive (line ZPL 389) line of maize (Zea mays L.) was studied under two environmental stress treatments: (a) soil drying and high temperature and (b) high temperature. In the first treatment 13-day-old plants were exposed to 7-day soil drying followed by high temperature stress (45°C), and in the second treatment 20-day-old plants were exposed to high temperature stress (45°C). Second leaves were labeled with [35S]methionine. During the labeling period line ZPBL 1304 showed no signs of leaf dehydration under soil drying and high temperature stress conditions. In contrast, line ZPL 389 was dehydrated 23%, as determined by relative water content. Incorporation of [35S]methionine into protein was greater in the resistant than in the sensitive line in both treatments. The pattern of synthesis of HSPs in the two lines was similar in treatments 1 and 2. Both lines synthesized a high molecular mass set and a low molecular mass set of HSPs. Proteins from both sets from both lines of maize appeared similar to each other, with respect to the molecular mass. Heated plants of the drought- and heat-resistant line ZPBL 1304 synthesized a band of HSP(s) of approximately 45 kilodaltons which was not found in heated plants of the drought and heat sensitive line ZPL 389. This is the first report on qualitative intraspecific difference in the synthesis of HSPs in maize.  相似文献

The effect of supraoptimal temperatures (30°C, 35°C) on germination and ethylene production of Cicer arietinum (chick-pea) seeds was measured. Compared with a 25°C control, these temperatures inhibited both germination and ethylene production. The effect of supraoptimal temperatures could be alleviated by treating the seeds with ethylene. It was concluded that one effect of high temperature on germination was due to its negative effect on ethylene production. This inhibitory effect of high temperature was due to increased conjugation of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid to 1-(malonylamino)cyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid and to an inhibition of ethylene-forming enzyme activity.  相似文献

Activity of methemoglobin reductase was studied in human red cells treated with methylguanidine and guanidinosuccinic acid in concentrations similar to those in plasma of patients with chronic renal failure. Enzyme activity was measured with Richterich technique following an incubation at 37 degrees C for three hours. Results have shown that methylguanidine in concentration of 5.4 x 10(-5) mol/l decreases activity of methemoglobin reductase in human red cells on average by 13.9%. Higher concentrations potentiate this effect. Similar changes in methemoglobin reductase activity were noted after introduction of guanidine-succinic acid into the mixture. This agent in concentration 5.6 x 10(-5) mol/l inhibited activity of the tested enzyme by 34.2% on average. Combined methylguanidine in concentration of 5.4 x 10(-5) mol/l and guanidine-succinic acid in concentration of 2.8 x 10(-5) mol/l inhibited methemoglobin reductase activity by 33.0% on average. It may be suggested, that methylguanidine and guanidine-succinic acid being low molecular uremic toxins may significantly decrease methemoglobin reductase activity in red cells of patients with chronic renal failure.  相似文献

An average follow-up period of 16 patients was 28 months following an implantation of the artificial aortic valve for its insufficiency. In 10 operated patients who were able to continue their occupation exercise tolerance increased by two classes, according to NYHA. Blood pressure gradient decreased significantly from 61.8 to 37.5 mmHg, cardiac volume index decreased from 639 to 602 ml/m2. Echocardiographically measured muscle mass of the left ventricle, end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes, and the left atrial dimensions decreased significantly following surgery. A significance of the relation of the left ventricle volume to its mass <4 as a prognostic factor in aortic valve replacement has also been confirmed.  相似文献

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cv Acala SJ2) plants were exposed to three levels of osmotic or matric potentials. The first was obtained by salt and the latter by withholding irrigation water. Plants were acclimated to the two stress types by reducing the rate of stress development by a factor of 4 to 7. CO2 assimilation was then determined on acclimated and nonacclimated plants. The decrease of CO2 assimilation in salinity-exposed plants was significantly less in acclimated as compared with nonacclimated plants. Such a difference was not found under water stress at ambient CO2 partial pressure. The slopes of net CO2 assimilation versus intercellular CO2 partial pressure, for the initial linear portion of this relationship, were increased in plants acclimated to salinity of −0.3 and −0.6 megapascal but not in nonacclimated plants. In plants acclimated to water stress, this change in slopes was not significant. Leaf osmotic potential was reduced much more in acclimated than in nonacclimated plants, resulting in turgor maintenance even at −0.9 megapascal. In nonacclimated plants, turgor pressure reached zero at approximately −0.5 megapascal. The accumulation of Cl and Na+ in the salinity-acclimated plants fully accounted for the decrease in leaf osmotic potential. The rise in concentration of organic solutes comprised only 5% of the total increase in solutes in salinity-acclimated and 10 to 20% in water-stress-acclimated plants. This acclimation was interpreted in light of the higher protein content per unit leaf area and the enhanced ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase activity. At saturating CO2 partial pressure, the declined inhibition in CO2 assimilation of stress-acclimated plants was found for both salinity and water stress.  相似文献
