To understand how a large soaring bird, the White Stork Ciconia ciconia , copes with energy constraints, we compared changes in body mass in 14 captive adult storks with the body composition of 12 free-ranging adult storks found dead from accidents. The captive storks, already in an enclosure for several years, were fed ad libitum . They were weighed daily for 1.53.5 years using an automatic device. The bodies of the accidentally killed storks were analysed to determine total water, lipid, protein and ash contents, and to assess the biochemical composition of certain organs. Females were on average 20% lighter and 24% smaller than males, but the body mass of the sexes varied in parallel throughout the year. Body mass peaked in December and January (2530% above minimal body mass), due essentially to large fat stores in subcutaneous and abdominal adipose tissues. Body mass and body lipid rapidly decreased from February to June, whether the storks reared chicks successfully or not, and remained minimal for a few days into July. In contrast to birds using flapping flight, no variation in body protein or pectoral muscle protein was observed while breeding, even though the moult occurred then, nor in August, before the time when wild storks migrate. Dietary segregation of sympatric seabirds in the Southern Ocean is partly linked to differences in their foraging techniques. We have investigated the activity of giant petrels (Macronectes spp.) in a king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) colony day and night during the austral winter of 2001 on the Crozet Islands. Using an automatic identification system and an infrared video camera, we followed 15 petrels tagged with micro transponders. Our data show that giant petrels predate king penguin chicks during the night. The activity of giant petrels is even slightly higher during nighttime than during the day. In addition, our data show a higher nocturnal activity by northern giant petrels (M. halli) than by southern giant petrels (M. giganteus). These unexpected results raise questions concerning visual adaptations to nocturnal foraging in giant petrels and their potential impact on the sleep, vigilance and crèching behavior of penguin chicks. 相似文献

This report constitutes the eighth update of the human obesity gene map, incorporating published results up to the end of October 2001. Evidence from the rodent and human obesity cases caused by single-gene mutations, Mendelian disorders exhibiting obesity as a clinical feature, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) uncovered in human genome-wide scans and in crossbreeding experiments in various animal models, association and linkage studies with candidate genes and other markers is reviewed. The human cases of obesity related in some way to single-gene mutations in six different genes are incorporated. Twenty-five Mendelian disorders exhibiting obesity as one of their clinical manifestations have now been mapped. The number of different QTLs reported from animal models currently reaches 165. Attempts to relate DNA sequence variation in specific genes to obesity phenotypes continue to grow, with 174 studies reporting positive associations with 58 candidate genes. Finally, 59 loci have been linked to obesity indicators in genomic scans and other linkage study designs. The obesity gene map depicted in Figure 1 reveals that putative loci affecting obesity-related phenotypes can be found on all chromosomes except chromosome Y. A total of 54 new loci have been added to the map in the past 12 months, and the number of genes, markers, and chromosomal regions that have been associated or linked with human obesity phenotypes is now above 250. This investigation examined the exposure of Egyptian infants to Aflatoxin M1 (AfM1) and of lactating mothers to Aflatoxin B1, using AfM1 in human milk as a biomarker for exposure to AfB1. The presence of ochratoxin A (OA) in human milk was also investigated to determine the levels of infants exposure to OA
from human milk. The results indicated that AfM1 was found in 66 (55 %) of 120 human milk samples with a mean of 0.3 ± 0.53 ng/mL (range 0.02 to 2.09 ng/mL). OA was found
in 43 (35.8 %) of 120 human milk samples with a mean of 21.1 ± 13.7 ng/mL (range 5.07 to 45.01 ng/mL), which will cause a
daily intake of OA from human milk exceeding the suggested tolerable dose of 5 ng/kg-1 of OA body weight. On the other side AfM1 was found in 25 % of blood samples (5 out of 20 samples), at a mean of 1.18 ng/mL, but it was detected only in one urine
sample (1 out of 20 samples). OA was detected only in 2 out of 13 blood samples (15.4 %) with an average 3.67 ng/mL. Whereas

Data on the swim speed, dive depth and feeding rates of three Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) foraging in summer 1998/1999 in Adélie Land, Antarctica were collected using dorsally-mounted loggers, in tandem with oesophageal temperature sensors. Swim speed could be integrated, together with the rate of change of depth, to determine dive and return-to-surface angles. Overall, birds increased rates of change of depth during commuting phases so that dive angles were steeper in dives terminating at greater depths. Angles of descent and ascent during feeding dives were greater than during non-feeding dives. Variation in the descent angle over time of particular dives was generally less than 10°, but the angles of the ascent phases varied more widely. The importance of selecting the optimum descent and ascent angles with respect to prey exploitation, oxygen stores and time gained in the feeding area over the course of a dive by diving at a steeper angle is discussed. 相似文献

Quantifying variation in ecosystem metabolism is critical to predicting the impacts of environmental change on the carbon cycle. We used a metabolic scaling framework to investigate how body size and temperature influence phytoplankton community metabolism. We tested this framework using phytoplankton sampled from an outdoor mesocosm experiment, where communities had been either experimentally warmed (+ 4 °C) for 10 years or left at ambient temperature. Warmed and ambient phytoplankton communities differed substantially in their taxonomic composition and size structure. Despite this, the response of primary production and community respiration to long‐ and short‐term warming could be estimated using a model that accounted for the size‐ and temperature dependence of individual metabolism, and the community abundance‐body size distribution. This work demonstrates that the key metabolic fluxes that determine the carbon balance of planktonic ecosystems can be approximated using metabolic scaling theory, with knowledge of the individual size distribution and environmental temperature. 相似文献

Fragmented and scrambled mitochondrial ribosomal RNA coding regions among green algae: a model for their origin and evolution 总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
Mitochondrial ribosomal RNA coding regions in the only three green algal
taxa investigated to date are fundamentally different in that they are
continuous in Prototheca wickerhamii, but highly fragmented and scrambled
in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Chlamydomonas eugametos. To gain more
insight into the mode of evolution of fragmented and scrambled
mitochondrial ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes within the green algal group, this
work (1) provides additional information on fragmentation patterns of
mitochondrial small- and large-subunit (SSU and LSU) rRNAs that strongly
supports the concept of a gradual increase in the extent of discontinuity
of mitochondrial rRNAs among chlorophycean green algae and (2) reports the
first example of fragmented and scrambled mitochondrial LSU rRNA coding
regions in a green algal taxon outside the Chlamydomonas group. The present
study (1) suggests that the scrambling of the mitochondrial rRNA coding
regions may have occurred early in the evolution of fragmented and
scrambled mitochondrial rRNA genes within the chlorophycean green algal
group, most likely in parallel with the fragmentation events, (2) proposes
recombination as a possible mechanism involved in the evolution of these
mitochondrial rRNA genes, and (3) presents a hypothetical pathway for
converting continuous mitochondrial rRNA genes into the highly fragmented
and scrambled rRNA coding regions of Chlamydomonas through a series of
recombinatorial events between short repeated sequences.

The enzymatic degradation of amino acids in cheese is believed to generate aroma compounds and therefore to be involved in the complex process of cheese flavor development. In lactococci, transamination is the first step in the degradation of aromatic and branched-chain amino acids which are precursors of aroma compounds. Here, the major aromatic amino acid aminotransferase of a Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris strain was purified and characterized. The enzyme transaminates the aromatic amino acids, leucine, and methionine. It uses the ketoacids corresponding to these amino acids and alpha-ketoglutarate as amino group acceptors. In contrast to most bacterial aromatic aminotransferases, it does not act on aspartate and does not use oxaloacetate as second substrate. It is essential for the transformation of aromatic amino acids to flavor compounds. It is a pyridoxal 5'-phosphate-dependent enzyme and is composed of two identical subunits of 43.5 kDa. The activity of the enzyme is optimal between pH 6.5 and 8 and between 35 and 45 degrees C, but it is still active under cheese-ripening conditions. 相似文献
